Fingers crossed we all stay safe but the odds are shortening..

I think an “I have the coronavirus AMA” would be handy!

@BunsyGirl white spots at back of throat usually indicates tonsillitis

YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus · 02/03/2020 20:00

111 advice is nuts really. I’ve been in contact with quite a few Chinese tourists over the last 6 months, and S Koreans, Japanese etc, as will most who work in tourism/hospitality industry. Most recent was 2 weeks ago and as of Thursday have had symptoms. But according to 111 (haven’t bothered calling given what those on MN have said) unless I can prove I’ve been in contact with a case thats gone on to be confirmed then they won’t test. How am I supposed to know if they have or haven’t, they’re tourists who I’ve encountered in face to face scenarios then never seen again! Ludicrous.

Legoandloldolls · 02/03/2020 20:08

Dh works with someone who has the test because they have developed symptoms after travelling to N Italy in half term. It does seem.strange they are only testing those with none contacts, so how did the Haslemere case get confirmed? You wonder if they crawled into Drs very I'll? Who knows what's going on. The advice isn't consistent day to day. Feels like there is no real plans in place

Sparklingplasters · 02/03/2020 20:12

Watch this d stiace, I’ve been in contact with the haslemere case and tonight I have sweat pouring down my face and a sore throat....

I’m hoping it’s just a mild cold

RoyalAlfred · 02/03/2020 20:13

This time last year the GP sent me to A&E after 3 weeks of a bad chest - I had started feeling a lot worse. Admitted for 5 days and 4 nights with flu. Nobody allowed into my room and medical staff with masks only.
People need to be vigilant, but remember that ‘ordinary’ flu can be very serious and unlike anything you’ve ever experienced. It doesn’t mean it’s Coronavirus.

I was 38 with no underlying health conditions.

Sparklingplasters · 02/03/2020 20:13

I meant “watch this space”

BunsyGirl · 02/03/2020 20:14

@YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus - yes, I am sure it’s tonsillitis...but given that it is most likely viral tonsillitis, the question is what virus caused it?!

HermioneMakepeace · 02/03/2020 20:17

We know one person who has it, a boy at DS's school. He is currently quarantined. But given that roughly 40% of the children in both my DS's and DD's school are Chinese and most went home for the holidays, I am surprised it is not more.

Mulhollandmagoo · 02/03/2020 20:31

@BunsyGirl you have my upmost sympathy!!! I had viral tonsillitis over new year having never had it before and I've never ever felt so poorly in my life

redastherose · 02/03/2020 20:33

Fingers crossed @Sparklingplasters I believe that there are likely to be loads more people who have it or have had it. According to the statistics released out of 10,500 odd tests done in the uk we only have 40 diagnoses, however, if they aren't testing you unless you have a confirmed contact with a known infected person how can they possibly know.

Aridane · 02/03/2020 20:37

Nah - it will be a ‘I have health anxiety and / or a cold and think I have coronavirus - ask me anything’

YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus · 02/03/2020 20:37

@BunsyGirl There are literally millions of viruses, at least 75,000 have been sequenced so your guess is as good as mine.
Hope you feel better soon.

BunsyGirl · 02/03/2020 20:58

Thanks @Mulhollandmagoo and @YouAreTheEggmanIAmTheWalrus

anothernamereally · 02/03/2020 21:13

I'm sure my ds had it in December- he was hospitalised and on oxygen with high temperature, cough and viral wheeze along with just about every other child on the ward, no runny nose or cold though and too young to tell me if he ached or had other symptoms

DamsonDress · 02/03/2020 21:48

DD's school was one of the first named in the news, following a ski trip to N. Italy; all children and staff on trip were sent home for 14 days self-isolation.

Tbh I think the Ed Authority were being over-zealous and misinterpreted the PHA's advice. No one had any symptoms nor had been in one of the 11 quarantined towns so self-isolation really not necessary.

They have since realised this and they're back in school.

School received a LOT of criticism from parents. Some think it was all very unnecessary but some think they haven't done enough. Don't think they can win.

I felt desperately sorry for the school staff the day it kicked off. Media, parents...TEENAGERS!! Shock

I don't think self-isolation was or is necessary but can't blame the school. They're instructed by the Ed Authority but it's them who get it in the neck.

And on a day when they've had to send several of their staff home. Not a day they'd want to repeat I'm sure.

I'm not worried. I'm happy for them to follow the PHA'S advice.

WhoWants2Know · 02/03/2020 22:20

Bunsy- The white spots are typical of strep throat / bacterial tonsillitis. I'm not normally one to go see a GP, but for it's worth going in for a throat culture and antibiotics. The consequences without treatment can be nasty.

ChipotleBlessing · 02/03/2020 22:40

People saying they or their children had it in December. No. You didn’t. It wasn’t even circulating in Wuhan until the end of December. It’s not possible.

GuineaSomethingGood · 02/03/2020 22:50

Deathraystare The NHS advice, I believe, is for anyone who has been to an effected area to self-isolate even if no symptoms. People can carry it without symptoms.

GuineaSomethingGood · 02/03/2020 22:51

the PP wo mentioned Strep throat- yes, I second that. see a doctor. In the days before penicillin, rheumatic fever was a very common illness. caused by Strep.

whattheee · 02/03/2020 23:13

I'm worried my daughter may have it. I work in a Hospital and had a query case in the other day, not found out yet. Is it possible I could of carried it and passed it on without having symptoms myself?

AdoraBell · 02/03/2020 23:19

No there but I work in a shop in a shopping centre. Nearest city has one case and there is a boarding school in my town with many foreign pupils who travel extensively during holidays. I doubt this town will avoid it.

Bunnyfuller · 02/03/2020 23:58

Sore throat and chesty cough are not Corona symptoms. We need to bear in mind there are always some vile bugs flying around at this time of year.

It would be helpful if a few of the European cases got online and told their story!

GuineaSomethingGood · 03/03/2020 01:04

The drowning lungs thing is also a symptom of pneumonia. I did have drowning lung thing many years ago and was also coughing up blood- dr tought was pneumonia. Turned out was just bad chest infection but apparently pneumonia is susually the cause of drowning lungs feeling . Doesn't have to be severe either.

theflushedzebra · 03/03/2020 01:17

I wouldn't be at all surprised if we got it. We got the bloody swine flu that was going around 10 years ago, and that was horrendous. Dh commutes to London, and we have 3 dc in school. All these cases popping up - it could be everywhere by now. I'm beginning to think it's just a matter of time.

Wonderland18 · 03/03/2020 04:19

I had a horrendous chest infection two weeks ago and 111 were pretty persistent with questions about contact with infected.

They got me antibiotics for it but I was quickly ushered into the doctor and out again, avoiding the waiting times as obviously they couldn’t risk me hanging about.
