Selfish panic buying?

CwtchesCuddles · 01/03/2020 16:56

A friend in London has just been shopping and sent me this picture of bare shelves, people have been panic buying!
AIBU to think it's selfish? I can understand buying an extra few things as part of your normal shop but clearing the shelves? Is everyone just looking after number 1 these days? What is going to happen when all those with spare cash buy up all the supplies?

OP posts:

disquieted Grin

someone had bought all the yogurts
why would someone panic buy all the yoghurts??!!

EmeraldShamrock · 01/03/2020 18:01

It is yet another example of survival of the fittest or richest in this case.
I don't have the spare cash now for an large extra shop, there is lots on for the next 2 months that I need to budget for. I know I'm lucky in comparison to others as we are both working. I'll pick up nappies and wipes if the store have a donation bank.

Funkycats · 01/03/2020 18:02

It's everyone for themselves, these aren't preppers, they are selfish twats!!!

Who are?

SusanneLinder · 01/03/2020 18:03

Shelves all full here and I did buy extra. By Saturday night especially at end of month, shelves are empty because people get PAID. Happens every month here. Forget shopping on a Sunday, nothing left.

Orangecake123 · 01/03/2020 18:05

I think it's to be expected OP. At the end of the day no one is going to prioritize your family over theirs.

That will include some buying 5 to 10+ of the same item.

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 01/03/2020 18:05

@T0tallyFuckedUpFamily, thank you, yes for me, DH and DD, that was just a top up for us. We already have a few packs of paracetamol/ibuprofen in the medicine box and a just barely started calpol/kids nurufen on the go. Only really bought them because I noticed the ibuprofen was all gone in Asda and Sainsbury's yesterday so when I saw them in B&m today thought it might be good to add a couple more.

Most preppers have already accumulated a good stock of basics so no need to panic buy, the goods on the shelves are left available for the ones who haven't prepared.

gamerchick · 01/03/2020 18:06

I blame all the preppers on here

See, said it yesterday. Preppers will get the blame. Grin

We're selfish for prepping well in advance, we're selfish for not sharing with the people who can't be arsed to prep. As well as being mental for doing it.

Can't make it up man Grin

SharpieInThe · 01/03/2020 18:07

Are we at that stage? Where everyone who scoffs at preppers blames them for the people who didn't prep panicking?

Lovely.

noblegiraffe · 01/03/2020 18:08

Probably cleared the shelves of pasta because it’s from Italy and had to be quarantined.

Come back in a fortnight.

Melroses · 01/03/2020 18:09

I still have my Brexit cupboard Grin

PicsInRed · 01/03/2020 18:09

Preppers don't panic buy.

Panic buyers panic buy.

This is why peppers prep. The avoidance of panic. 😉

Yeah shelves were empty here as well. Pasta strangely.

I am a mild prepper though, I already have a stash of food above my kitchen cupboards where the use by is good until 2021. And no, I didn't panic buy, I built it up gradually for brexit and then it wasn't needed so I kept it up there for this. I won't be buying anything else.

Orangecake123 · 01/03/2020 18:15

I too am also glad I started prepping for brexit for my mother and younger sisters- they're not rushing to the shops now. I knew my father would do absolutely nothing and even know hasn't bought anything apart from creme eggs.

JingsMahBucket · 01/03/2020 18:15

@Tableclothing
Seems more likely that everyone buying a few extra things is what has cleared the shelves, not one selfish bastard who bought 600 tins of beans.

😂 This made me bust out a laugh. I'm just imagining the one selfish bastard trying to check out at the register with his 600 tins of beans!

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 01/03/2020 18:16

A friend reminded me today, that when I started prepping I had said that if we get the perfect storm, we’ll see panic buying. At the time I said that all we needed was Brexit, a dry summer/bad winter and a scare story about shortages and we’ll see panic buying. I really wasn’t banking on a pandemic! Brexit, a particularly nasty Coronovirus and a possible world recession. What fucking brilliant next couple of years we are going to have. ☹️

squirrelsbizaar · 01/03/2020 18:16

I don't really shop at the weekend, because its too busy. When I have ventured into a supermarket, usually on an evening, your picture looks fairly representative of a regular close of business Saturday. The weekend is the busiest time of the week for a supermarket.
I visited my local town centre on Saturday and picked up some pain killers (because I had a headache) the shelves seems adequately stocked and there was no frenzied shopping.
I think starting threads and sharing pictures like that adds to the panic.

Newjez · 01/03/2020 18:17

It is Sunday. Shops usually run stocks down on a Sunday. probably be ok tomorrow

As long as stocks of Raisin Wheats do not run out. If they do there will be trouble coming from Daff House.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 01/03/2020 18:17

Don’t forget that you can still eat canned goods for 4-6 years after the BB date.

ChickLitLover · 01/03/2020 18:19

It’s ridiculous though. Someone I know sent me and a group of friends a photo of her 10 large bottles of anti bac hand gel. 😳🙄😂 By buying lots like this and not leaving any for the masses, most people will be walking around spreading our germs with our non antibacterial gelled hands to her, meanwhile her bottles in her cupboard are benefitting no one. 🤷🏻‍♀️ She seemed happy though. I always think you can’t argue with stupid so didn’t comment on the photo.

I have a problem with my immune system, making me potentially more vulnerable and think people are quite selfish but what can you do.

Ive filled my cupboards with whiskey and gin instead. Grin

Mintjulia · 01/03/2020 18:19

There is nothing wrong with prepping. I'm a single mum, I have no-one to run errands for me, so I have bought enough basic food, soap and nurofen to last me & ds for two weeks if we are ill.

I've not panic bought anything. I associate that black market selling things at double the price out of the back of a van. Grin
