Selfish panic buying?

A friend in London has just been shopping and sent me this picture of bare shelves, people have been panic buying!
AIBU to think it's selfish? I can understand buying an extra few things as part of your normal shop but clearing the shelves? Is everyone just looking after number 1 these days? What is going to happen when all those with spare cash buy up all the supplies?

Just in time deliveries bring more for as long as they are able? (I.e. if their location or journey route falls under a lockdown zone) Just like normal really. Panic buying once supplies have run out and can't be replaced is a whole other issue.

Baaaahhhhh · 01/03/2020 17:00

It's all complete nonsense as well. Even if you are on lockdown, you can still have deliveries, you can still go out to the shops, shops will still receive deliveries.

Funkycats · 01/03/2020 17:02

People just can't do right, can they?
Anyone who's been prepping for any length of time have been ridiculed.
Pp is right though. Just in time system means that more is being ordered and stocks will level up soon.

mrsbyers · 01/03/2020 17:02

If you’re self isolating surely you shouldn’t go to the shops ?

Frankiecandle · 01/03/2020 17:03

I blame all the preppers on here.

EssentialHummus · 01/03/2020 17:04

If there are enough delivery drivers, stock in shops, goods (which we import in vast quantities), staff along the supply chain etc. We’re used to those things all working. A pandemic is the sort of situation in which one or more of those things may not be as usual.

I don’t think it’s complete nonsense, personally. I did a larger shop than usual last week. I don’t regret it.

Show us the picture.

More people will find out what its like to be so poor you have to rely on food banks or go without.

LynetteScavo · 01/03/2020 17:07

I don't need to panic because I've very slowly built up a stash because of Brexit. I will continue to very slowly add to my stash because it's going to take a while for coronavirus to spread, if it does.

Catapillarsruletheworld · 01/03/2020 17:07

Shops still seem to be fully stocked here. I don’t know anyone who’s prepping in RL.

Seems a bit unnecessary really.

CalmdownJanet · 01/03/2020 17:08

Are you sure it's not a Sunday thing? U shop every Sunday and my local Aldi has bare shelves all year around at this time on a Sunday.

I'd like to see the pic too

Tableclothing · 01/03/2020 17:08

Seems more likely that everyone buying a few extra things is what has cleared the shelves, not one selfish bastard who bought 600 tins of beans.

ouch321 · 01/03/2020 17:10

I cannot see the picture but how do you know it's not just standard Sunday 5pm stock levels?

GinandGingerBeer · 01/03/2020 17:10

Have you ever been to a supermarket as they're about to close on a Sunday? The one near me is always pretty bare by that time. Most people do their shopping at the weekend that all.

Igotthemheavyboobs · 01/03/2020 17:10

Ahhh that's why there was no milk in Morrisons!

BonSoirMonCherie · 01/03/2020 17:10

Our local supermarket had very bare shelves yesterday.

We could end up in very hot water with supply chain issues before long.

Thenextstorm · 01/03/2020 17:11

First rule of prepping, you don't tell anyone you're prepping....

Peppers do not panic buy...

Cuddling57 · 01/03/2020 17:15

Our local supermarket was fine today.

BestestBrownies · 01/03/2020 17:15

Are people seriously stockpiling food because of Brexit/Coronavirus?!? Wow. What’s the point?
In a food shortage/zombie apocalypse situation the ‘have nots’ will just kill you and/or nick all your carefully bought supplies anyway 🤷‍♀️

caperberries · 01/03/2020 17:16

I've just been doing an Ocado shop & a lot of things I wanted to buy were out of stock

BrieAndChilli · 01/03/2020 17:16

If a whole area is on lockdown then you may not be able to get food deliveries. Our food deliveres come from a city 20 miles away in a different county. Equally if that county goes on lockdown we won’t be able to get any supermarket deliveries. If all the drivers are also on self isolation There will be no one to drive the vans!!

Yes if you have to self isolate but no one else in your town has to then yes you can still get food deliveries /get someone to bring you stuff but the minute a while area starts to lockdown the shops will be stripped bare. Look how it is when it snows!

theseriousmoonlight · 01/03/2020 17:18

I went for a big shop today. There was no bread or bottled water (I like fizzy water at the moment as I'm pregnant and tap water tastes sweet for some reason) and someone had bought all the yogurts... It was only around 2pm so not usual 'end of day' shelves

Disquieted1 · 01/03/2020 17:18

You've convinced me: I'm going to panic buy a bottle of wine right now.
