Selfish panic buying?

A friend in London has just been shopping and sent me this picture of bare shelves, people have been panic buying!
AIBU to think it's selfish? I can understand buying an extra few things as part of your normal shop but clearing the shelves? Is everyone just looking after number 1 these days? What is going to happen when all those with spare cash buy up all the supplies?

Our supermarket (I'm in suburban London) also fine this weekend - literally the only thing that is out of stock is hand sanitisers, which are not normally stocked in big numbers, so i get why that happened.

DH has done a 'just in case' shop at Costco where all shopping looks like panic buying anyway! he didn't find a big thing of pasta so I bought one in Tesco this week and there was no sign of a run on them at all.

There was a lack of some fresh fruit and veg in Aldi last night but that could just have been a Saturday evening. Not much point stocking up on fresh stuff IMO as I don't think things are going to get to that stage for at least a few weeks yet.

Echobelly · 01/03/2020 21:53

NB, I will admit social media is powerful with this stuff - I did go to get some liquid hand soap yesterday mornings as the bars we have at home are hard on my skin if I have to use them frequently, and I had read a tweet about them all being sold out at a branch of a UK supermarket, so I bought in local chemist, then went to Tesco for some unrelated stuff and found there was plenty of liquid soap - I'd let my head get turned! Blush So I totally get why some people might have swooped in and gone the whole hog.

@GinDrinker00

Did you miss the bit where I wrote that it isn't normal for a Sunday evening? I often go at that time and I've never seen shelves that empty.

I’m pretty much fully prepped definitely at least a month, we are considering doubling up just in case.

HavenDilemma · 01/03/2020 22:04

There are people on eBay selling virucidal hand gel for £50-£100 for half a litre! Nasty bastards

HavenDilemma · 01/03/2020 22:07

@Wehttam 😂😂😂😂🤔 Its not the middle of the cold war!!!!! A month?!? What on earth for???? It's selfish people like you who are causing others to be short of essentials. Don't you dare!

Yellowbutterfly1 · 01/03/2020 22:08

The shelves in my local Asda were quite empty today but that’s normal for there.
I don’t think they bother to restock the shelves from one day to the next.
Petrol forecourt on the other hand was like there was about to be a fuel shortage that I didn’t know about. Never seen it so busy, looked like real panic buying.

Porcupineinwaiting · 01/03/2020 22:09

What essentials are other people short of, Haven? Other that antibacterial hand gel, what's run out?

Wehttam · 01/03/2020 22:13

Haven selfish but prepped. Good luck over the next few months. 😷🤗

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 01/03/2020 22:15

It's selfish people like you who are causing others to be short of essentials.

What essentials? The wrong brand of pasta? Artisan bread? Essential medications? Water? Oxygen? What do you class as essentials?

raspberryk · 01/03/2020 22:16

I am due on my period and we've run out of painkillers and there was nothing on the shelves under a fiver, so I'll suffer as I'm not paying that price!
Also lots of other items very low or out of stock, worse than normal for mid day on a Sunday. There were workers with cages re stocking all through the store and not keeping up.
Daft panic buyers means nornal people can't buy usual amounts.

TheTwilightZone · 01/03/2020 22:19

Twilight no need to be embarrassed for me. It's terribly nice of you, of course, but I didn't ask you to wade in on my behalf. DFOD

Aggressive creature aren't you. But just so you know, it's a public forum. So you don't need to ask. It's free. All part of the service dear. Smile

Wehttam · 01/03/2020 22:19

Disclaimer, I actually started my prepping 3 weeks ago once we realised the severity of the situation in China and the fact they turned their internet off. Once the updates stopped coming from the usual outlets we made a plan.

I’m hoping we can laugh about this come the summer when we are still eating beans and pattaks tikka sauce.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 01/03/2020 22:20

Why are panic buyers responsible for you not being organised enough to have painkillers in your house, if you have bad periods? Why wouldn’t you have a packet of cheap painkillers put aside. They’re as cheap as 30p and they’ve actually been short in Tesco for months, not just since the Covid19 outbreak.

Wehttam · 01/03/2020 22:21

Painkillers Still in Tesco too.....

TheFlis12345 · 01/03/2020 22:22

Went to the supermarket in West London this afternoon and absolutely no stock issues at all.

Snoopdogsbitch · 01/03/2020 22:28

Twlight how was anything I said aggressive? Deluded, much? You clearly are living up to your username. Being aggressive means I care, and I care not a jot for your tuppence worth.

It's so lovely that you're so fond of me: I am very dear. Aw x

HavenDilemma · 01/03/2020 22:28

NASALEZE is what you need folks! It goes up your nose and Creates a c virucidal barrier which kills any virus you breathe in via your nostrils. Can be bought from Nasaleze website (Amazon are out of stock).

CeibaTree · 01/03/2020 22:30

Us too. First time we've 'prepped' - so no (selfish!) panic buying from us and we have enough to last around 3 weeks.

GoodDogBellaBoo · 01/03/2020 22:32

Panic buying does not make you a prepper. A prepper wouldn’t have to panic buy anything. Smile

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 01/03/2020 22:36

HavenDilemma, I thought you were just a scammer, so I read up on that. I’m actually going to order some now, before it ends up selling out. I’m amazed at the results of the study for prevention of the flu virus.

TheTwilightZone · 01/03/2020 22:43

Sad for you that you're so angry and bitter. ☹️

HotPenguin · 01/03/2020 22:45

Hang on a minute, I zoomed in on that empty shelves photo, they were totally out of conchiglie but had plenty of spaghetti. Are we all getting up in arms about selfish conchiglie panic buyers only leaving spaghetti for the the less well off?

Thelnebriati · 01/03/2020 22:51

Was it tricolour spaghetti?
