To think people may have already had coronavirus?

I had pneumonia recently, pretty severe, hospitalised. Everyone I've told has said, 'it's weird how many people have said they've had pneumonia in the last month or two.' Yes I know it's the season for these things but it's a bit unusual that so many young and fit people have had pneumonia.

Just out of interest, has anyone you know had pneumonia in the last month or so (in the UK)?

Current thread on MN re. Sinus infection, many posters including myself saying theyve had a dry cough and breathing difficulties for weeks..

I have been wondering about the symptoms being akin to those of Coronavirus.. Certainly mine at one time was so bad when i coughed i was gasping for air as my throat became completely blocked. I was told by the GP to go to the surgery, fortunately i couldnt get there at the time, so didnt spread it further, but it does keep coming back as it has with many others on that thread.

A different virus completely, or a mutation of the Coronavirus?

Porcupineinwaiting · 01/03/2020 16:29

If corona virus was here in the UKat Christmas then we would, by now, have thousands of cases like they do in China. More in fact, because they've been taking extreme measures to contain it since January and we haven't.

Two winters ago a very nasty virus swept through our office. 3 of my colleagues, all perfectly fit men in their 30s, got pneumonia and one died. It was horrible and a real shock but this stuff does happen every winter without hitting the news.

aintnothinbutagstring · 01/03/2020 16:49

There's been some of my work colleagues who have had awful coughs and colds, around Christmas and New year (and coming to work with it Hmm but we do have a strict absence policy). I'm sure there are more cases of Covid out there, but then again the UK has apparently already tested thousands so wonder if those are within the hospital or community. I have had a dry wheezy cough and chest pains for a week which culminated in severe back pain, it was back pain that sent me to the doctor who did all the usual screening, have you travelled, temp, lung checks, but I've no fever and doc was more concerned about pulmonary embolism.

Also, I believe the US has had a bad strain of influenza circulating which could obviously have come over here also.

Rosecatter · 01/03/2020 17:04

Yes, I think they probably have. Most people don't go to the doctors for bad colds or even flu.

pourmeanotherglass · 01/03/2020 17:09

I wondered this. DH was extremely I'll over Christmas and works in a school with quite a few Chinese boarders.

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 01/03/2020 17:13

I think it must now be here. Around Christmas no but it must be.

My very healthy friend is floored with a chest infection.

Namechangeforthegamechange · 01/03/2020 17:17

I was saying exactly this yesterday OP! Nearly half my workplace have all been down sick with “flu” terrible coughs and fevers and sore throats. Assuming it’s viral hardly anyone went to the doctor. I went as I’m expecting and was told not to worry as if not been to China, the following day all the advise changed. It won’t flag up anywhere as we are all shift workers we just get covered and no sick pay so I think a lot of the virus is about going unnoticed

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 01/03/2020 17:20

We all has something over Christmas.

Feeling unwell, hot burning eyes, short of breath, coughing, and it kept coming back for weeks.

Mum2threejs · 01/03/2020 17:48

This came up in a work conversation recently. Over Xmas and new year most of the staff were ill. Bad coughs high temps 2 with severe chest infections. We think it’s possible. We work in the tourist industry and had several visitors who had been to the region affected in China. Again most of us self medicated so no official figures.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 01/03/2020 17:57

Who's to say there hasn't been in atypical upturn in hospital admissions over the past couple of months though (do they tend to report such things on an ongoing basis)?

Porcupineinwaiting · 01/03/2020 17:59

@NewModelArmyMayhem18 yes this is monitored very carefully. If there had been an unexplained upturn a) they'd know and b) they'd have been looking to explain it.

Elephantonascooter · 01/03/2020 18:01

I've thought the same about a backwards flu i had over xmas. Cough then almost flu but not as bad, still in bed for days, worse than any cold I've had, then a sore throat and still not fully shaken it.

Kanga83 · 01/03/2020 18:02

I've wondered this too. I was hospitalised with Pneumonia in the new year. I have asthma but never had pneumonia before or anything like it. I felt at deaths door for around three days before I was admitted.

ismellamouse · 01/03/2020 18:06

I have a friend who lives in Italy. He said today that the authorities in Milan have identified 2 different strains of Corona virus one of which has been around for sometime. As our government has only just started testing people, it's quite possible that we have had the same
thing circulating here since before Christmas without anyone realising.

Knewyou · 01/03/2020 18:35

Nearly everyone I know had a horrible coughing bug around Christmas. I did take teenage dd to the doctors as she had coughed for three weeks and was told it was viral.

lilgreen · 01/03/2020 18:51

DD was ill with fever, cough that developed into tonsillitis over Christmas. We got it too but DH was worse, coughing for 6 weeks! We’re never normally ill and I work in a primary school.

obviouslymarvellous · 01/03/2020 18:53

I got pneumonia in November- again usually fit and well, and never I'll. It totally floored me for 5 weeks and have only just started feeling like me again. I was very scared as really felt at one point I wasn't going to recover.

joffreyscoffees · 01/03/2020 18:54

My mum had pneumonia all over Xmas and new year - she's actually still signed off work (she has asthma and not in the best of health so hasn't recovered well) I did wonder to myself last week if it was in fact Coronavirus but I think it was too early.

I do agree with you though.

Aragog · 01/03/2020 19:50

There are other strains of coronavirus which people may have had too. This Covid 19 is a new strain of it.

Barbie222 · 01/03/2020 20:21

Interesting idea. They've tested so many people and they've come up negative though, surely there'd be more positives if so?

Justaboy · 01/03/2020 20:29

Quite possible we may have, or rather are seeing a few mutations of
the damm thing!, after all it didnt just start on the one day its been there possibky changing and as its so "Flu like" in its symptoms many would have just thought this is the Flu from hell!, but didnt seek treatment as normally treatment is not given anyway, and when did the medical profession know about its existence?, any practising Doctors GP's like to comment?.

Mummyoflittledragon · 01/03/2020 20:42

There are a lot of different Coronaviruses. The one, which causes COVID19 is new. So are we therefore to presume from this comment that the strain, which has been around a while is just coincidental? Ergo nothing to do with the latter?

Mumonamission01 · 01/03/2020 20:44

Totally agree, back in September I had two very strange viruses one which gave me excruciating heart pains to the point I embarrassingly collapsed at my gp and needed an Ambulance the pain was so un real I was violently sick, the other gave me an equally excruciating headache that I needed an Ambulance again, sickness and over 40 temp, the last 3 weeks again an horrific flu and terrible chesty cough!

Lweji · 01/03/2020 21:00

No. This is a very different thing, more related to SARS and quite different from the strainst that circulate normally.

jasjas1973 · 01/03/2020 21:07

Washington state USA, now saying up to 1,500 cases of Covid19, they think its been circulating for at least 6 weeks.
Remember most are mild, everyone putting it down to flu/cold etc.

We don't live on top of each other like they do in China and we are, generally, of better health.

How many people in the UK have actually been tested and would they tell us the results? no publishing of russian interference on elections or BJ's mis use of public funds.
