To think people may have already had coronavirus?

I had pneumonia recently, pretty severe, hospitalised. Everyone I've told has said, 'it's weird how many people have said they've had pneumonia in the last month or two.' Yes I know it's the season for these things but it's a bit unusual that so many young and fit people have had pneumonia.

Just out of interest, has anyone you know had pneumonia in the last month or so (in the UK)?

I have a cough, have sneezed and can now feel the cough in my lungs and breathing is slightly laboured. I've just seen that people with mild symptoms will be asked to self isolate for seven days. My ds was off school with vomiting, fever and headaches, just flue symptoms last week. His teacher seemed concerned re Coronavirus, I laughed it off at the time, but now see gastrointestinal symptoms have been added to the list. I think we have it. Kids are complaining of headaches and coughing. I can't get tested because I don't know if I've come into contact with anyone who definitely has it.

EggysMom · 09/03/2020 17:55

We (DH, DS & I) had a weird flu-like virus in January. Not so much achey but burning up temperature, dry throat, awful cough afterwards. The most noticeable feature of our virus was that it seemed to come in two waves: exhausted and fever, you feel like you were recovering, then the throat & cough. I was concerned about DS (non-verbal so couldn't tell me how he was feeling), so took him to GP and he was given antibiotix.

I don't feel as though I fully recovered, for the last two weeks I've had a pre-cold tingle in the roof of my mouth. DS has just taken to his bed with his second cold of the year.

squishedgrapes · 09/03/2020 17:56

In January my youngest was off school for a long time with coughing fits, that affected his breathing. It was so long that I had a letter and visit from the school attendance officer. Now I'm expected to send 8n a sick. One of he is off school, but I would never get a drs appointment. It's ridiculous

itsgettingweird · 09/03/2020 18:16

Interestingly we've had this discussion recently.

Since January loads of people have had a mild cold got better and then 3/4 days later it's come back worse with a cough.

Most of us have felt pretty rough with terrible sore throat but none of us have had pneumonia with it.

Jellykat · 09/03/2020 18:58

So if the government are heading towards telling people with a cold or temperature to self isolate for 7 days, what will happen to those like me who have had a sore throat and dry cough for weeks? 7 days won't make any difference..except to my finances..

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 09/03/2020 19:09

I've had a horrid cold over the last two weeks with bad cough - still keeping me awake at night - with coughing fits getting less regular but still there. I know it wasn't anything worse but I feel so guilty when I cough in public! I have a slight cough all year round with terrible catarrh and post-nasal drip. Will I have to self-isolate too?

Bearfrills · 09/03/2020 20:49

I think the reasoning behind it is that after seven days you'd have an idea as to whether it is COVID-19 or something else based on whether you get better, worse, or stay the same.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 10/03/2020 07:07

DD has a really sore throat and dry cough this morning (no known contact with anyone who has been to Italy recently), so keeping her off school. But no idea whether I should keep her off for the rest of the week or what?

catspyjamas123 · 10/03/2020 07:33

Keep her off. No point in spreading anything. And she needs to recover. The schools should be closed anyway. We must have a right to protect our health! Where are the human rights for kids in this?

This is an interesting article from last week suggesting that Chinese and Japanese beleive it has been around far longer and didn’t originate in China at all

HeronLanyon · 10/03/2020 08:16

I think numbers indicate there may be many who have had this - it can be experienced at the mild end of the spectrum.
I had a week of extreme unexplained exhaustion mild fever woozy and puffy and basically bed rest just last week. I isolated myself in extreme of caution because I just couldn’t work out what was wrong with me. Could work from home a bit. Tried extremely hard to put all thoughts of cv out of my rational mind but this was difficult.

Frangipanini · 10/03/2020 08:54

I had a very nasty virus a few weeks ago and I didn't catch it off anyone in my family. I now work p/t with the general public and think I picked it up there.

I've always been very healthy and pride myself on everyone around me getting sick, except me. Well, I was proper floored. I felt dizzy for a few days, then started coughing, then had 3 days of 40 degree temp, then a dry cough. My DC picked it up off me, but very mildly. At one stage I thought I was going to have to go to the hospital. It was weird and yes I think I've already had it.

Purplewhitelie · 10/03/2020 08:56

I think I may have had it about 4 weeks ago. One of the thing I had is a very blood shot eye which was really embarrassing at work. But no infection in the eye. I now see that is a symptom. And yes to the gastric flu symptoms!

Purplewhitelie · 10/03/2020 08:57

But I don’t know I was assuming not at the time.

Whoateallthecheese · 10/03/2020 09:01

I know three healthy young people who had pneumonia this year before Christmas. I think what you're saying is plausible.

BackInTime · 10/03/2020 09:02

This why I wonder about the NHS not testing for cases with symptoms unless they have been abroad or had known contact with someone who has. You could be in contact with someone unknowingly on public transport, in a restaurant or other public gatherings etc and also where there is now community transmission not all cases will be spread from someone who has been abroad.

Purplewhitelie · 10/03/2020 09:09

And my mother in law is currently is in hospital with pneumonia. She does have underlying issues but was fine before.

Frangipanini · 10/03/2020 09:13

Purplewhite, OMG I had a blood shot eye just before my flu hit too. I had it, people commented and then I started coming down hard with feeling tired and dizzy. The next day I was floored with flu.
Shock

Purplewhitelie · 10/03/2020 09:18

Yes but there was no advice then to self isolate or or symptoms list then!

megletthesecond · 10/03/2020 09:22

Yes. I'm sure a scientist said on BBC switch that they identified something was going on on new years eve. Presumably the pre-Xmas travellers took it with them.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 10/03/2020 09:29

Please don’t assume you’ve had this virus. My youngest and I appear to be coming down with colds and I’m avoiding contact with people, as advised, but even if we do get very very ill, I will self isolate as a precaution and although I will treat it as potential COVID19, I won’t assume it is until I’m told so. IYKWIM. If it’s a flu, then I run the risk of catching and worse, spreading COVID19 if I become blasé.

WanderingLost1 · 10/03/2020 09:34

Oh same here totally, I strongly suspect we have it at the moment (DD’s best friend has same symptoms as us and was in northern Italy for half term) but we won’t be making any assumptions.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 10/03/2020 09:43

It’s so difficult and anxious inducing, WanderingLost1, because people are making assumptions and putting others at risk. I’m so frightened for my two vulnerable adult children and my youngest’s two best friends as they have heart conditions.

NemophilistRebel · 10/03/2020 09:43

😳 has she self isolated and asked for testing to be confirmed?!

Lweji · 10/03/2020 09:49

This is an interesting article from last week suggesting that Chinese and Japanese beleive it has been around far longer and didn’t originate in China at all
That article is full of scientific half truths and odd interpretations.
