"Only the elderly/immune suppressed are at risk" - attitude of dicks?

People who say not to worry about Coronavirus, because "Only the elderly/chronically ill/immune suppressed" are dicks.

Some of us fall into these categories. Some love people who fall into these categories. Some have some essence of humanity. Stop using "Only the xxx" to dismiss concerns. Stop conflating it with flu.

Wash your hands. Isolate yourself as required. Err on the side of caution.

YABU = I agree with these dicks.
YANBU = I am human.

KaptenKrusty, you sound like you are doing a grand job on the handwashing so you are probably in the top half of the nation right now!😁

janemaster · 28/02/2020 00:33

@AlexaAmbidextra The UK is an incredibly ageist society. The old don't really matter.

janemaster · 28/02/2020 00:35

@Floralnomad But they are not just saying this to young healthy people. This is being said to the general population. So of course it is saying old and chronically ill people don't matter.

trixiebelden77 · 28/02/2020 00:41

How are people conflating it with flu?

I certainly find it odd that there are many people absolutely frothing at the mouth in panic over this who haven’t bothered to vaccinate themselves against vaccine preventable outbreaks like influenza and measles. It makes it clear they are not rational people who make good risk assessments.

janemaster · 28/02/2020 00:47

@trixie Is that true?
I am scared of this, and I have an annual flu jab and vaccinated my DCs.

FelicityFebruary · 28/02/2020 00:49

I don't know any anti vaxxers.

FelicityFebruary · 28/02/2020 01:01

It seems to depend on where you live. My area had maintained a high uptake of MMR. And all the people I know who qualify for the flu jab get it.

Noconceptofnormal · 28/02/2020 01:18

Yanbu at all. My husband did this the other day - on a WhatsApp group with my family put the stats up on coronavirus deaths to reassure me that our kids would be OK because no under 9s have died... on a WhatsApp group to with my parents on who are late 70s-80s. Not exactly reassuring for them to see the death rate is 8-14% is it.

Coyoacan · 28/02/2020 01:18

Well I'm getting on for the seventy age mark and I really would prefer to die from a flu or corona virus rather than get cancer or dementia.

But I'm sad for younger people who have a compromised immune system.

TheClaws · 28/02/2020 01:42

What I dislike more is people saying “It’s just another flu” or “It’s just a cold!”

IT IS NOT.

Learn to think for yourself instead of simply repeating what you have read on social media. Think critically. This nonsense is so damaging.

MashedSpud · 28/02/2020 02:04

The 1918 pandemic was only affecting older/frail people at first but when it returned several months later it was killing healthy people including young soldiers.

We all need to responsible and follow the guidelines.

MashedSpud · 28/02/2020 02:06

To be*

Wheatensthebest · 28/02/2020 02:27

It is NOT the flu. Flu can result in pneumonia in people with respiratory conditions but this type of bacterial pneumonia responds to antibiotics. Coronavirus on the other hand can result in viral pneumonia which does not respond to antibiotics as it is caused by a virus. I am very concerned about the whole situation. I have my dd who has asthma and dh who has diabetes and is also on immunosuppressants for another health condition.

GrumpyHoonMain · 28/02/2020 04:13

Viral pneumonia is milder than bacterial and treated with anti-virals. Stop scaremongering

amd4578 · 28/02/2020 04:23

I think most people are using this when people try and claim half the worlds population is going to die from this as more of a point to say well that is not right as it mainly effects xyz. As opposed to it doesnt bother me as only xyz will suffer from it.

Mummyoflittledragon · 28/02/2020 05:10

GrumpyHoon
I did not know there were anti virals for viral pneumonia. It sounds like Wheat didn’t either. The post is about not scare mongering. But about fear.

Dds friend came to dinner yesterday. I told her she should be washing her hands with soap. She said she doesn’t do this ever as it makes her hands go rubbery. Dd said she talks about the Coronavirus as just the flu. As an unwell person, I’m looking at how to address this issue. Her rubbery hands are far less important than my health! Not looking forward to being killed off by cv despite feeling pretty suicidal atm.

Makinganewthinghappen · 28/02/2020 05:28

I am worried about this virus - at first I wasn’t but as time has gone on I admit I am starting to worry.

My dh is in a higher risk group ( despite being on his 30s). I actually did what I would class as a panic shop last night which included a LOT of things Like pasta, porridge etc so that if need be we can hide out here for a couple of weeks and not be going to shops etc.

I am NOT an end of the world type prepper at all and I’m feeling really embarrassed about my shop!

borntobequiet · 28/02/2020 05:37

YABU and misinterpreting a statement of fact, loading it with judgemental overtones. I fall into the slightly higher risk category and it doesn’t bother me.

flower1994 · 28/02/2020 05:37

I think yabu (and I do have people in the "vulnerable" category who i love) only in as far in that this really isnt anything new in terms of immunocompromised people being the more at risk group. this is true of any illness and whilst it truly sucks is the way it is. those who fall in this group do need more protecting. I dont think people who acknowledge this fact are dicks.

however, yanbu to not want it pointed out all the time as I'm sure you're aware of all the above

Ivebeentohellanditscalledikea · 28/02/2020 05:42

Where I work people keep saying "oh it is mainly affecting men". I work with people who have weak immune systems and the workforce only has one man who usually gets a "sorry Bob" (not his name) at the end of that statement. It's a way some people try to make themselves feel better.

LemonTT · 28/02/2020 06:00

When officialdom use this type of phrase they are referencing the fact that their responses centres around the risk to those people and that there is very little risk to others.

Take the issue of school closures. This has wide implications for the community as it may prevent parents from working. Some of those parents may be front line or essential workers. They are needed to keep transport moving and to care for the sick and old people. They are needed to help prevent and treat sick or old people from a whole host of diseases and viruses that are plentiful at this time of year and can be just as deadly.

It’s about trying to get people without any sense of perspective to contain their frothing and fretting. To appreciate who is at risk, usually not them, and they can do to properly support their community and society deal with preventing the spread of this and other viruses

The old and people living with illness are always priorities in planning for outbreaks and pandemics. That’s why they get free vaccinations and are called in for health checks.

Dogsaresomucheasier · 28/02/2020 06:06

Kids at school are obsessed with it at the moment, it’s got worse since another school locally closed the other day when a kid who had been skiing in Italy reported being unwell. I’ve said similar things, not to be a dick but to calm the hysteria.

StealthPolarBear · 28/02/2020 06:07

Do we know (and I genuinely don't know so not trying to spread panic) that death is the only poor outcome? Again everyone seems to be assuming if you don't die you'll be fine. That may not be the case.

EnidBlyton · 28/02/2020 06:20

They are not saying People dont matter at all!
They are trying to stem the increasing panic

OtherVoicesOtherRooms · 28/02/2020 06:21

It's meant to be biased, because I'm sure I'm right!

So there is absolutely no point in offering any other opinion or voting on this thread.
