"Only the elderly/immune suppressed are at risk" - attitude of dicks?

SylvanianFrenemies · 27/02/2020 22:47

People who say not to worry about Coronavirus, because "Only the elderly/chronically ill/immune suppressed" are dicks.

Some of us fall into these categories. Some love people who fall into these categories. Some have some essence of humanity. Stop using "Only the xxx" to dismiss concerns. Stop conflating it with flu.

Wash your hands. Isolate yourself as required. Err on the side of caution.

YABU = I agree with these dicks.
YANBU = I am human.

I don't think it's meant as a value judgement. Some groups are more vulnerable to viruses be they flu, Corona, SARS, MERS. They should be extra careful. People not in those groups should be careful not to put them at risk. YABU.

bellinisurge · 01/03/2020 09:13

It's the "only" that's the problem. Not " you need to take care of yourself and make sure you don't put others needlessly at risk, particularly those more vulnerable ".
It's the implied " don't worry, those people aren't you so they don't count ".

BubblyBarbara · 01/03/2020 09:29

TBH I’m genuinely concerned about older people getting the virus because if they do they’ll be clogging up the hospitals for longer which will threaten the outcomes for younger people who might not be able to get admitted

Wow. Fucking old people, taking our hospital beds.......

You are a disgrace.

janemaster · 01/03/2020 10:03

The Government have already said younger people will get the hospital bed before older people.

BiBiBirdie · 01/03/2020 10:05

I agree with you OP, sick of being given the bullshit flu line as well and being told I'm panicking and hysterical.
When they do turn bloody Hyde Park into a morgue, would like to see the same people say that then. I'm about to belt the next person I really am.

Mossyrock · 01/03/2020 10:06

Apparently overwhelmed hospitals will prioritise the treatment of those who are most likely to survive.

This makes me even more concerned for older people.

KenDodd · 01/03/2020 10:10

janemaster
Where have they said that?

For what it's worth I agree.
If I had only one ICU bed I would rather a otherwise healthy 20 year old got it than a 50 year old with asthma. I say that as a 50 year old with asthma. The life of a 20 year old is worth more than mine.

janemaster · 01/03/2020 10:13

@kendodd Because our NHS would be unable to cope with an outbreak like China, because unlike them we are not building extra hospitals or drafting in extra Drs from elsewhere, just crossing our fingers. So the Government said beds would go to those most likely to survive, which means younger people.
Of course that assessment that medics have to do in war zones and very poor countries makes sense. But no I think the Government should be reacting properly, rather than crossing its fingers and saying if the worst happens we will let old people die. Because that is what they are saying.

KenDodd · 01/03/2020 10:19

I wouldn't be surprised if this government did the exact opposite of that though and prioritised the treatment of older people in the same way they have with austerity, because they are more likely to vote Tory.

Diva66 · 01/03/2020 10:24

I’ll just kill myself now then, shall I? My life obviously being utterly worthless. The country won’t miss the enormous amount of tax I’m paying to keep these services going.

KenDodd · 01/03/2020 10:35

Diva66

Nobody's saying that and you know it.
In a ideal world there would be enough capacity for everyone.
If you have one ICU bed and two people needing it, one 92 with health problems and the other 20 in otherwise good health both likely to die withoutcare. How would you decide who gets it?

Diva66 · 01/03/2020 10:44

Read the thread. The message is clear. Once again the ill, vulnerable, old and disabled are not wanted by this society.

FelicityFebruary · 01/03/2020 10:47

It's a government unwilling to act with necessary care for their citizens. I heard the ex health minister saying we can't do what China did. Presumably they plan to "manage" this while keeping everything going. Logic dictates healthcare rationing if you look at the hospitalization rates.

For anyone saying its flu you could point out that the virus has been officially named SARS Cov2. SARS standing for severe acute respiratory syndrome.

The WHO advice to over 60s deserves a thread of its own on here. Most people are not aware enough of the implications of this becoming endemic.

KenDodd · 01/03/2020 10:47

Ok, you're right. The 92 year old should absolutely always get the bed, unless of course a 98 year old needed it, anything else would be shameful.

FelicityFebruary · 01/03/2020 10:50

Ken Dodd watch John Campbell's channel and you will see you are painting a rosy view of our communal future if the government doesn't get it's finger out.

janemaster · 01/03/2020 10:51

Of course medics will prioritise otherwise healthy young people. The point is they should not have to. There should be enough capacity for everyone. China built two extra hospitals. What is our Government doing?

BiBiBirdie · 01/03/2020 10:53

That's how I feel my DS is seen @Diva66
Unless people live it every day, it's easy to laugh off or call people hysterical for worrying. The government already has things on place which they know full well are leading to deaths and hugely and negatively impacting the elderly or the disabled and longterm unwell. Yet they carry on, turning up the pressure. When the MP read out the names of people in her constituency who have died as a direct result of cuts, barely anyone was actually in the house to hear it.
I genuinely worry that the government are deliberately being ignorant of this and sending out bullshit about flu and we're all prepared because they see this as another thing to lower the care, healthcare and benefits bill. If they can wipe out people via a virus, Nono e can blame them directly regardless of them doing sweet FA. I've even had someone have a go at me for commenting on the latest side piece of Boris being pregnant.
Our country is screwed, that's why we have a Tory government in the first place. Generations on from us will look at it and say "so these people were in power for ten years and lots of people suffered and the country was in a right mess and people were dying of hunger and poor healthcare, but those people effected voted them back in. They will question if people were utterly stupid.

BiBiBirdie · 01/03/2020 10:54

@janemaster probably promising the same 4 they've been promising for the last, what, 5 years at least?

janemaster · 01/03/2020 10:54

I think the Government is prioritising short term political expediency and crossing its fingers and hoping this is just another scare.

janemaster · 01/03/2020 10:57

@BiBiBirdie True!
Our country cannot cope with seasonal flu, we do not have the capacity to cope with this.
I hope this does not amount to anything and we are all panicking for nothing. But what worries me is that China introduced extreme measures to contain this, our Government is doing nothing. Literally nothing.
Oh I lie. Bringing retired health workers back in. That is the level of planning happening. It is laughable and scary to see such obvious incompetence.

BiBiBirdie · 01/03/2020 11:03

Because fundamentally @janemaster, the Tory government does not give a fuck for may of us unless we have a huge income or an old school tie.
We were warned what would happen if they got back in but people ignored it and chose to pick their government in the manner they pick their XFactor winner. We are categorically an uninformed people and the government love it.
We have a PM who ignores flood victims who believed his bullshit and voted for him to continue to do nothing. He prioritises announcing his floozy is pregnant (good luck with that love, he will be onto the next gold digger quicker than your epistome will heal) over sitting for a COBRA meeting.
My local hospital had to treat people in the car park in 2018 due to flu. They will not cope with this.

woodchuck99 · 01/03/2020 11:22

The Government have already said younger people will get the hospital bed before older people.

I think they have just said that priority will be given to those most likely to survive. That doesn't necessarily mean younger people will be prioritised over older people. It will be based on an individual clinical assessment of how will that person is and realistically how likely they are to survive if given treatment.

woodchuck99 · 01/03/2020 11:22

will well

Gilead · 01/03/2020 11:26

I have a 23 year old with brittle asthma. Am concerned.
