"Only the elderly/immune suppressed are at risk" - attitude of dicks?

SylvanianFrenemies · 27/02/2020 22:47

People who say not to worry about Coronavirus, because "Only the elderly/chronically ill/immune suppressed" are dicks.

Some of us fall into these categories. Some love people who fall into these categories. Some have some essence of humanity. Stop using "Only the xxx" to dismiss concerns. Stop conflating it with flu.

Wash your hands. Isolate yourself as required. Err on the side of caution.

YABU = I agree with these dicks.
YANBU = I am human.

From the link provided earlier:
At present, it is tempting to estimate the case fatality rate by dividing the number of known deaths by the number of confirmed cases. The resulting number, however, does not represent the true case fatality rate and might be off by orders of magnitude

A precise estimate of the case fatality rate is therefore impossible at present

flower1994 · 28/02/2020 11:32

unless you really dont understand how the immune system works, its truly worrying to see how many are apparently shocked or outraged that this virus, like many others, affects the old and immunocompromised more so. its sad but true. not sure there is much more to understand

woodchuck99 · 28/02/2020 11:34

and not sure what the Spanish flu has got to do with anything, that actually supports what I'm saying. they were so concerned by that, extensive research was done to see why it targeted people in their 20s and to prevent it from happening again

That isn't just because it affected young people! It killed up to 500 million people!

janemaster · 28/02/2020 11:35

19% of people who get it are seriously ill. By seriously ill they mean hospitalised. No flu does not hospitalise 19% of people who get it.

And I have DCs. I am more scared of leaving them without a mother, than reassured that 81% of people will not be seriously ill.

Nowayorhighway · 28/02/2020 11:35

This is my attitude because I have no personal reason to worry. I’m not elderly and I don’t have a chronic health condition so I personally have zero reason to be anxious and losing my shit over it. It’s just not worth my while at all, I’m getting on with life as usual.

Skierrdery · 28/02/2020 11:36

Who's shocked flower1994?

woodchuck99 · 28/02/2020 11:36

lol no, even if I didnt have children I'd still be more concerned with kids being killed than my age group

I didn't say anything about you. I said people whose children were your age.

flower1994 · 28/02/2020 11:36

woodchuck99 it was also in 1918............do I actually have to say anymore..............

Nowayorhighway · 28/02/2020 11:36

There’s zero point living your life worrying about being a part of the tiny percentage who will be seriously affected by this.

janemaster · 28/02/2020 11:37

Three of my relatives died from the spanish flu leaving a child - my gran - an orphan and with no sister at 8. Spanish flu devastated families.

flower1994 · 28/02/2020 11:37

Skierrdery have you read any of the threads on here, apparently its shocking news and also even more shocking if you dare to acknowledge this

Nowayorhighway · 28/02/2020 11:38

You have more chance of being killed in a car accident than dying from coronavirus. If you want to be anxious about dying then feel it every time you get into a car, it’s not very counterproductive though is it?

janemaster · 28/02/2020 11:38

@Nowayorhighway 19% of those who get it are not a tiny percentage. I was not worried about SARS or Ebola. I do actually understand risk. And I understand that coronoavirus is terrifying.

janemaster · 28/02/2020 11:39

No my chances of being killed in a car accident are tiny.

flower1994 · 28/02/2020 11:40

janemaster noone is saying you cant be worried but it doesnt mean everyone else should be, nor does it make them a dick to be able to acknowledge that the overall risk to themselves is low

janemaster · 28/02/2020 11:41

Yes they are saying I can't be worried, because apparently if you have a health problem that makes you vulnerable to this you are nearly dead anyway. That is not true at all. But you know facts are pretty much ignored by a lot of people.

woodchuck99 · 28/02/2020 11:42

woodchuck99 it was also in 1918............do I actually have to say anymore..............

What is your point?

Skierrdery · 28/02/2020 11:42

You have more chance of being killed in a car accident than dying from coronavirus.

Incorrect

Statistics on reported road casualties in Great Britain for the year ending June 2018 show there were:

1,770 reported road deaths

That's in a whole year.

Let's see how many die from Coronavirus in a year.

flower1994 · 28/02/2020 11:42

jane dont be so ridiculous, if you're at risk of course you can. where has anyone said that Hmm

flower1994 · 28/02/2020 11:44

woodchuck99 please do your research into vaccines, health care and over all living conditions between then and now

Newjez · 28/02/2020 11:45

@Nowayorhighway

If we all drove without caring about dying, then a lot more of us would die on the roads. I tend to drive safely and carefully.

LochJessMonster · 28/02/2020 11:46

The population of China is 1.3billion, and roughly 3000 people have died from coronavirus in 2 months. Every day in China 700 people die from traffic related incidents.

@flowernYou are obviously not reading the same thread as me. There have been a number of comments that surely anyone vulnerable to this virus lives with the knowledge that anything could kill them every day such as flu. That is not true. Yes there are people who if they get a cold could die because of their health issues. But coronavirus kills people with health problems who can be normally expected to live a normal lifespan. We don't live with the knowledge that flu could kill us, because as long as we get our flu shot, it is very unlikely to kill us. Plus most of us have some immunity to flu.

This thread is full of people who actually do not understand risk at all.

woodchuck99 · 28/02/2020 11:48

woodchuck99 please do your research into vaccines, health care and over all living conditions between then and now

Thanks for the patronising comment .As a healthcare professional, I don't need to do any research. There is no vaccine or treatment for this and while healthcare is much better if a huge proportion of the population are affected we won't be in a better position as the NHS does not have the capacity to treat them.
