To think that coronavirus has exposed a nasty undertone of racism?

Now I’ll admit that I can’t be doing with all the hysteria surrounding this. People wanting colleagues to stay off work because they’ve been to china/wanting to keep their kids off school because one of them has been to china/wanting Brits to be kept in china lest they bring the virus home.

While there have been some deaths, in comparison to the numbers of those diagnosed these are small and have occurred in people who mostly had already underlying health conditions.

But I can’t help thinking what these attitudes are actually saying about people’s attitudes towards the Chinese.

Quite apart from the above, I’ve seen people express concern that a package sent from China two weeks ago might infect them, followed by advice to quarantine it for two weeks and then spray with anti-bac before opening.

Wondering i f it’s safe to go to the local Chinese in case someone working there has been in contact with someone from China.

And someone I know personally who is of Chinese origin but grew up in this country being told that they should keep out of circulation because they’re Chinese and therefore could be infectious.

A lot of this is of course hysterical paranoia, but it seems to be spreading, and it gives out a very nasty message imho.

@Clavinova

Probably a fictitious anecdote.

Why do you think so? Just yesterday, I was walking up to my place of work and I got my first "Do you have Coronavirus?" comment from a teenager. Just like the time when SARS was happening, and a school boy thought it was funnay to make a SARS joke at my expense for being ethnically Chinese. I have lived in the UK for over 30 years and have only visited China twice.

Even if people are just being cautious about the Coronavirus, racist behaviour does exist and there will be idiots who will associate Chinese people in general with the virus.

JanuaryJones20 · 31/01/2020 07:27

Yes OP I expect people would be very relaxed and totally fine about catching it if it originated in mainland Europe or the US say......of course they flaming wouldn’t 🙄🙄. Is that what you seriously think OP? Honestly?

People are frightened, hysterical, in lots of cases massively overreacting and being ignorant. But that’s not racist. It’d be the same wherever it had originated.

TheUnknownThingThatKillsYou · 31/01/2020 08:56

I couldn't give a shiny shit if anyone thinks that I am racist, I am going to do all I can to protect me and my family. Its natural.

PotholeParadise · 31/01/2020 09:03

I hope that includes washing your hands, UnknownThing.

I've been especially noticing people coming out of toilets very speedily this week. Wonder how many of them are simultaneously making a point out of avoiding Chinese people.

bobstersmum · 31/01/2020 09:19

Ffs op. Pc Britain gone stark raving mad again. Doesn't matter where the virus came from, everyone would be acting the same. If it originated in London it would be exactly the same. Is it possible to be racist towards your own country? Why the hell do people try to scream racism for EVERY little thing? Drives me up the wall.

atomicblonde30 · 31/01/2020 09:23

My DH is Chinese, my children and step child are mixed race. He has experienced racist intolerant and ignorant comments relating to his ethnicity and corona virus in his work place twice alone this week. My DSD has been called racist names at school, insinuating she’s a ‘dirty’ and spreading a virus she has barely any knowledge of.

The comments on most social media sites and online have been nothing short of horrific.

YANBU.

Corona virus has absolutely exposed certain peoples well hidden racism and xenophobia.

Quite frankly I’m fucking sick of it.

TheUnknownThingThatKillsYou · 31/01/2020 09:34

2 cases confirmed in UK....

Interesting reading.

PotholeParadise · 31/01/2020 09:51

If it originated in London it would be exactly the same. Is it possible to be racist towards your own country?

Well, no, it wouldn't. There's no visual look to having had parents or grandparents who were born in London. My greatgrandparents and one of my grandparents came from London, but they settled a bit more oop north after the Blitz. If there was a brand new virus in London, no-one would ever avoid me because I might have Lunnon-germs.

However, at the moment it sounds like if I had a Chinese grandparent, people would think it was reasonable to assume I was carrying Coronavirus.

Seems a bit unfair to me. How many of you make fortnightly pilgrimages to the birthplaces of your grandparents?

To listen to social media, you'd think people of Chinese descent spent their lives circumnavigating the globe.

paulinespeaksmanylanguages · 31/01/2020 09:51

It was spread because of dirty practices-not to mention inhumane practices-in China.

It began in China. Therefore most people will avoid Chinese people, as they do not know what contact they may have had with China.

It is now here and it didn't fly over on a swirl of dust, it came in on a person-a person who was in China when it broke and is now here.

That is not racist. If you want to pretend that it began on Mars, then go right ahead but I will be following the example of the Chinese themselves and avoiding all those who have been-or may have had contact with anyone who was in China at the time it broke.

It came from China and it came because of dirty practices in China.

I would like to see the WHO go over there when the coast is clear and take bloody action before the next thing comes out-this latest is the third in recent years.

That is not racist, unless it is racist to make a negative remark about anyone who isn't Caucasian- mind you, it looks as if that is the way!

ironicname · 31/01/2020 09:55

They're not worried about catching Chinese - they don't want to get sick. It would be the same if it came from Lapland.

PotholeParadise · 31/01/2020 09:58

Pauline, you don't know what contact anyone has had with China. That includes the Caucasian people.

Wash your hands after using public transport.

Mother87 · 31/01/2020 10:02

Atomicblonde30 - makes me sad to hear that, about racism. It's not really 'hidden' is it. I experienced racism in the playground 50 years ago.. and at work in the corporate world.
I was raised to celebrate our differences and exoticism (DF Singaporean Chinese/DM English rose...) So nothings really changed has it...

loobyloo1234 · 31/01/2020 10:07

YANBU. I have been to China many times. Some of the things people have said about the country has been despicable. Esp their food habits. They think because they've seen a video of 'bat soup' that it means the whole country must eat it. Its actually tiring having to stand up for them tbh

Why do people not understand - it is not what they eat - it is how they eat it and the lack of regulations that are the issue not to mention the extreme poverty in some provinces meaning some people know no different when it comes to picking meat up for as cheap as possible

PotholeParadise · 31/01/2020 10:13

Perhaps we should all avoid Ozzy Osbourne, he who bit the head off a live bat on stage, and anyone related to him.

bluebells100 · 31/01/2020 10:18

Just vile people, they’re everywhere. Every country has its fair share of them.

China is the cesspit of this world - nice.

It’s not about the government though is it?

It’s about Chinese (some of who have never even been to China) people being racially abused and experiencing ignorant prejudices simply because they are Chinese and that’s where coronavirus originated from.

You surely understand that right?

loobyloo1234 · 31/01/2020 10:32

China is the cesspit of this world.

Have you been? Or are you tarnishing a whole country because of what has happened? In which case, just to clarify, you are racist

atomicblonde30 · 31/01/2020 10:35

@Mother87 I’m really sorry to hear that (though unfortunately not shocked) I’ve definitely noticed that racism and xenophobia towards East Asian people is socially okay and tolerated whereas racism and xenophobia towards black people for example is socially taboo and often challenged by many.

My DSD is 7 and having to put up with being called a ‘dirty ch**ky’ at school, my DH is having people refuse to work with him in the office - fucking ridiculous.

Mimishimi · 31/01/2020 10:42

China is not the cesspit of the world. They make everything and have an incredible culture.

SomeOldIdiot · 31/01/2020 10:46

Morgan I am shocked by your post. You clearly have not spent any time there.

BonnesVacances · 31/01/2020 11:03

It's another outlet for racists, unfortunately. But not everyone who expresses concern about contact with a Chinese person is racially motivated by that concern.

We are hosting a Chinese student at half term. We also have an immunocompromised DD. It's reasonable to check that he hasn't been in contact with anyone from his home country in the two weeks before he comes to stay, particularly as his UK school has a high intake from China.

It many cases it's about assessing risk, than racism.
