Conflict in the Middle East

Iranian clerics call for assassination of Trump and Netanyahu

Article in The Telegraph reports that Iran’s most senior clerics have called for the assassination of Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu.

In a 10-point statement, the Assembly of Experts said the killing of “the criminal American president” and “the wicked prime minister of the Zionist regime” was a religious duty.

Assassinating the two leaders – whom they described as mahdour al-dam, or deserving of death – “must not be neglected under any circumstances”.

In their call for Mr Trump and Mr Netanyahu to be assassinated, the clerics wrote that avenging the blood of Ali Khamenei, the supreme leader who was killed on the first day of the war, remained “paramount”.

“It is obligatory upon any duty-bound person who gains access to these criminals to send them to hell,” they added.

The language read like a religious edict but stopped short of a formal fatwa, which in Shia Islam is issued by an individual cleric in his own name rather than by a group.

The Assembly of Experts is an 88-member body of clerics constitutionally tasked with choosing and supervising the supreme leader.

The statement shows how fractured the establishment has become.

Only about 63 of the body’s members signed it, and the Assembly’s secretariat distanced itself hours later.

Nobody. And I don't think anyone has said Iranian clerics calling for death is good.

The conversation is just opening up I think. Into general religious of today calling for people to be killed.

Well you’re opening it up about fundamental Christian pastors. But I’m not sure why.

TooBigForMyBoots · 01/07/2026 17:50

Iranian clerics calling for assassinations ... nothing to see here!

Exactly! They've been doing it for decades. They're always at it.🙃

To make a point that it is standard fare for so many religious people.

Are people on this thread really saying they would support the assassination of the leaders of two of our closest allies? And the only two of our allies who would have the skills or resources to support us if the UK was threatened? Fuck sake, talk about biting the hand that feeds you.

Israeli is one of the UK's closest allies? Really? The USA was once but the world order has changed a bit recently.

Do you remember Trump threatening to invade a NATO ally?

Twiglets1 · 01/07/2026 06:32

The strange thing is that presumably the names of the 63 are known.

Very risky behaviour.

Thinking about this it’s probably riskiest for the 25 who didn’t sign it, Iran not being super keen on dissenting opinions. The joys of choosing between (I’m guessing) a high risk of a torture session sometime soon and a moderate to low risk of Trump dropping a missile on your house.

Twiglets1 · 01/07/2026 06:31

Do you agree then with assassinations of other world leaders that have done things many consider criminal? There will be quite a few of them. Putin for one but many others of course.

What if Trump decided to assassinate world leaders he considers to be criminal?

Would people be saying, to be fair .... or would they be saying who does he think he is to call for the assassination of other countries leaders?

He just assassinated the Iranian leader. How have you missed that? He called for his troops to do just that and more - with no war declared.

Twiglets1 · 01/07/2026 18:12

JadeHare · 01/07/2026 17:46

Because you have now tried to imply that this thread has descended into an Israel bashing thread. It’s not bashing Israel when Israel are now equally involved in making threats.

It has descended into an Israel bashing thread. We're not even talking about the Iranian clerics anymore just the usual bickering and attempts to move the focus from ever criticising Iran to ... just more about Israel and also the US.

It was the start of war and there was a huge lead up to it with the IRGC murdering thousands of their own civilians - how have you missed that?

The Iranian leader wasn't just killed because Trump considered him to be criminal. He doesn't just assassinate leaders he considers to be criminals as I said before, or there would be many more leaders getting killed around the world. And also - Trump has a job as a President of the US not as a religious cleric telling others to assassinate world leaders as their religious duty.

Risky for both those that did sign it and those that didn't, I agree.

They should have stuck to discussing religious matters.

I was responding specifically to a poster pointing out Trump's rhetoric that “a whole civilisation will die tonight.”

No we don't need to take that seriously because it didn't happen and Trump does make a huge amount of idle threats so we know.

Iran has threatened to destroy the US and Israel too. But this thread isn't about those generic threats, it's more about the call the Iranian clerics made for the assassination of Trump and Netanyahu as a religious duty.

What you appear to be missing is that it is pretty evil yes to use religion as an excuse to incite others to commit murder. In my opinion anyway.

So you want the clerics' statement to be discussed with no context whatsover. What a completely pointless exercise.

swimsong · 01/07/2026 18:37

dairydebris · 01/07/2026 16:46

Another thread that was started about something other than, but has ended up all about Israel.
Must be so odd to be so obsessed with something one dislikes so much.

Well no, the OP is claiming the motivation, theme and purpose of the thread is to agree that religious leaders should not call for the assassination of political leaders. So citing the speeches of rabbis is very much on topic.

Twiglets1 · 01/07/2026 18:57

Which is it @swimsong ?

You're telling me I want the clerics' statement to be discussed with no context whatsover.

While telling Dairy that I'm claiming the motivation, theme and purpose of the thread is to agree that religious leaders should not call for the assassination of political leaders.

If you're going to talk for me at least keep the narrative the same.

I was trying to think earlier of wars that did not include a religious element, and there are not that many.

In fact, I am reading a series of articles on Scottish history just now, and what a bloodthirsty lot. Pretty much religion in it all the way.

Depends what you mean by a religious element. Being religious is a common human trait but most wars are not caused by religion - first and second world wars, Crimea, Korea, Vietnam, Russian Revolution, Rwanda, Iran/Iraq, Franco-Prussian, Biafra, American Civil War, Anglo- Dutch just off the top of my head.

They don't seem to give a shit do they? The US and Israel are enemies not allies to many on this board and you see that across every thread.

You get a wider range of views on other boards so I'm guessing you don't come to this Conflict in the Middle East one very often.

It says something about the leaders of Israel and U.S that so many people wouldn’t mourn their passing though don’t you think? And yet you seem most put out by that! When Trump phoned Netanyahu and told him “everybody hates you” I thought well yes true but everybody hates you too! Well apart from you Twiglets obviously 😂
Bottom line is that if those two egotistical maniacs and Putin all dropped dead tomorrow, I suspect the whole world would breathe a sigh of relief.

I'm not "put out" by people not mourning the passing of 2 marmite leaders, no. I've already said I don't think I would shed a tear for any world leader and I prefer the more moderate ones tbh.

This thread is about assassinations ordered by religious clerics though. That is something I find worthy of discussing.

Well don’t worry Twigs. Donald seems to be taking it all in his stride. Or maybe no one told him. From Reuters a few hours ago:

"We're getting along very well," Trump said, adding Iran has "come a long way."
"I think they're fine," the president added.

Religious matters like their obligation to end the Jewish state as an illegitimate usurpation of sacred Islamic lands?

It’s impossible really to look at the declaration without context. It’s the thin end of the wedge if you consider some of the slogans of the terrorist organisations they fund as part of the Iran axis.

Trump and Netanyahu assassinated the Iranian supreme leader six months ago. Is it any surprise the Iranians want retribution? Especially as the current supreme leader is his son.

Am I worrying just because I started a thread on MN to discuss it? No.

What did you expect Trump to do, cry over it? His security will already be at the maximum as will Netanyahu's. It's the clerics who are named who might want to consider extra security for the rest of their lives.

What this shows is how the Iranian negotiators are saying one thing - trying to achieve a peace plan - while the hardliners are very open about not wanting peace at all. That's an internal problem for Iran.

This has been discussed and it's not all Iranians who want retribution it's the hardliners who just want more fighting and everlasting wars apparently.

Do Iran want peace and to get their sanctions lifted/funds and assets unfrozen or not? If they do then the religious clerics need to shut up about assassinations.

If your dad had recently been assassinated you probably wouldn’t be thinking of the bigger picture would you?

Anyway the Iranian negotiators seem to be running rings around Trump at the moment so they likely don’t think they have much at risk.

I think your a bit naive if you honestly believe it’s an internal problem for Iran rather than a deliberate strategy. They need to placate the hardliners within the terrorist organisations they fund and support whilst negotiating to normalise relations with the U.S.
