Conflict in the Middle East

Iran’s embassy in Britain urges expats to become ‘martyrs’

Tehran’s embassy in London is recruiting Iranian expats in the UK to “sacrifice their lives for the homeland” in the Middle East.

Diplomats at the consulate urged “all brave and noble children of Iran” residing in Britain to sign up to the war effort programme “for the people’s defence of the land”.

On its official Telegram channel, the embassy said: “Let us all willingly give our lives. It is better than giving the country to the enemy.”

Officials called on “proud Iranian compatriots residing in Britain” to register for its “Jan Fada” – “sacrificing life” – programme. The post has sparked concerns over British national security.

Might just be me but I can't see this campaign being successful.

I thought lots of the Iranian expats in the UK moved to get away from the IRGC, so can't see them sacrificing their lives for them.

Britain said on Tuesday the Iranian ambassador to London had been summoned over what the government described as the Iranian embassy's "unacceptable and inflammatory" comments on social media.

Britain's minister for the Middle East, Hamish Falconer, made clear that the embassy "must cease any form of communications that could be interpreted as encouraging violence in the UK or internationally", the Foreign Office said in a statement.

Could it be a veiled threat? Expat Iranians are already being targeted. An Iranian colleague has told me that the property of Iranians who have left Iran is being confiscated, and that they will not be allowed to inherit from their relatives who have remained in Iran. There have been rumours that expats will be stripped of their Iranian citizenship.

Twiglets1 · 28/04/2026 20:56

This seems possible @Aparecium

Iran turns to citizenship and assets as tools of pressure beyond its borders

The Islamic Republic is escalating its campaign against the diaspora, moving beyond domestic seizures to explore the confiscation of assets held by Iranians in foreign countries and possible revocation of their citizenship.

In addition to financial threats, some officials are calling for the removal of the most basic legal tie between the state and the diaspora: Iranian citizenship.

Hassanali Akhlaghi Amiri, a member of parliament from Mashhad, said earlier this month that cooperation with "hostile countries" should lead to the revocation of a person's national identity.

"The punishment for cooperating with hostile countries against national security and interests begins with the confiscation of property and may even include the revocation of citizenship," Akhlaghi Amiri said.

There have been a number of foiled terror attacks from Iran. Not surprising with its proxies causing mayhem in many countries in the middle east....Hamas, The Houthis, Hezbollah...

cupfinalchaos · 28/04/2026 22:57

I have Iranian friends in the UK and they couldn’t care less about their Iranian citizenship.. they would be terrified to go back!

Twiglets1 · 28/04/2026 23:08

It gets worse … the campaign is said to be an international effort, with embassies in Australia and Sri Lanka sharing the same message.

The post targeting UK expats already has almost 400 heart emojis, 27 thumbs up reactions and 26 prayer emojis, according to the Standard.

It will impact anyone who doesn't have any other citizenship I think. How will they renew a visa to stay in the host country if they have no nationality anywhere? They will be forced to become refugees. I don't know about other countries but in the UK this means they won't be able to work, the benefits system is different for refugees I think so as well as losing their jobs I wonder if they'll lose their homes, if they've no means to pay their rent or mortgage? They can rebuild their lives after their asylum claim is accepted but that will take time and in the meantime if they've become homeless and jobless they may also lose all of their possessions too (nowhere to put them). So for some people it could have a disastrous impact. For Britain as a whole, too, if it means a sudden loss of people in skilled positions and a sudden increase in benefits claims from Iranians forced to become asylum seekers. I have no idea how many Iranians on working visas are in the UK.

Those aren't necessarily support for the message. The prayer emoji is often used to show support meaning prayers for those affected. The heart emoji also gets used to signify support or comfort. The thumbs up could be from racist people thinking well that's one less Iranian then (expecting it's a suicide mission). So I wouldn't read too much into those.

That’s awful. It’s a massive thing to have citizenship revoked especially in those who, as you say, don’t have dual citizenship.

That’s a win for any Iranian asylum seekers. The can say they’re anti-regime and now have more evidence they will be targeted.

Genuinely doesn't seem safe for them to return to Iran at the moment.

The often mentioned "20 terror attacks in UK" is mostly plots against Iranian dissidents. And that is why the UK asylum system is so important. The PRC and Russia do the same. And they go after relatives in the home country too.

Australia kicked out the Iranian ambassador in 2025 and has proscribed the IRGC as a terrorist organisation. One sensible thing our government has done. The UK should follow suit.

The UK is following suit in proscribing the IRGC as a terrorist organisation. Keir Starmer is going to announce it in May apparently though the process will take a few months.

Finally but I understand that the Labour Party was dragged to this point kicking and screaming and only after they were snookered by the EU doing it first. Should have happened in 1979 and that goes for my country too.

To be honest Labour have been no worse than the Tories in dragging their feet on this issue.

Agree it should have happened years ago. It seemed to take the EU doing it and the thousands of murders in January by the IRGC for any UK government to make it a priority.

Well today there was another attack on Jewish people.

Counter terrorism police probe Iranian involvement in attacks on Jewish venues.

Well they are calling for martyrs. Need to close the Iranian embassy and proscribe that terrorist group
