US bombs Iran’s vital Kharg Island

Donald Trump has said that the United States has “totally obliterated” military targets on Iran’s vital Kharg Island.

Kharg Island, located about 17 miles off the northwest coast of Iran, is the backbone of the country’s oil industry, handling approximately 90 per cent of its crude exports.

Commonly known among Iranians as the “Forbidden Island”, Kharg is shrouded in secrecy and heavily guarded by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). It is widely regarded as Iran’s most sensitive economic asset.

Mr Trump threatened to target the island’s oil infrastructure if the Iranian regime continues to “interfere” with ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz nearby.

“The United States Central Command executed one of the most powerful bombing raids in the History of the Middle East, and totally obliterated every MILITARY target in Iran’s crown jewel, Kharg Island,” he wrote on Truth Social.

“I have chosen NOT to wipe out the Oil Infrastructure on the Island. However, should Iran, or anyone else, do anything to interfere with the Free and Safe Passage of Ships through the Strait of Hormuz, I will immediately reconsider.”

Experts have warned that bombing Kharg Island’s oil facilities could push surging prices even higher, as it would effectively remove the entirety of Iran’s crude exports from the market.

The question I have atm is if the Strait is used to get everyone to back down where is Iran in five to ten years? And what then.

Indeed this could be likely.

Iran could be still backing terrorism in the region, therefore, continue to cause terrorist attacks from Lebanon, problems in Gaza and terrorist attacks from Yeman, and still oppressing their people that don't back the regime.

This exactly but weapon production too. After all they’ve just shown the strait is a way to get everyone to step aside. So continuing to develop heavier weapons what can be done in five to ten years when they’re even stronger?

Maybe thats what the US and Israel were thinking when they launched their attack on Iran.

The future if Iran has more weapons, closer to nuclear weapons (they could hold the world to ransom), maybe, weaken them now before it's an impossible task (might already be), before their proxy terrorist groups destroy more countries 🤔.

Their proxy terrorists Hamas, has effectively destroyed Gaza by launching a massive terrorist attack on Israel. Did they know how Israel would come back at them after October 7th, did they even care?

We can only all guess.

I know twiglets, it seems the USA didn't do any contingency plans for the straight ,surely a properly war gamed situation would have realised this and got into that island straight off to hold them to ransom first...look at what we can and will do...leave the shipping lane alone etc.
It's seems like a huge over site

My DS is an A Level politics student. He said ' I wonder why they don't just invade that Island' a week ago. We have been joking that he's an American spy (but maybe he just reads more than DT!)

TopPocketFind · 17/03/2026 12:06

Trump ignored warnings about the strait of Hormuz

The US also decommissioned minesweeper last year
https://www.navytimes.com/news/your-navy/2026/03/12/the-us-navy-decommissioned-middle-east-minesweepers-last-year-heres-what-they-did/

So why should Europe bail him out?

His mess to sort.

And whatever next, Cuba, Greenland?

I think Hamas knew exactly what would happen, and Netenyahu has played right into their hands and given them what they wanted all along- a cessation of any cooperation between Israel and any other ME countries and a win in the propaganda war. Hamas don't, and never have given a damn about Palestinian deaths. The more the better- more sympathy for them.

Yes people seem not to be considering this.

@TopPocketFindhow would you deal with the issue of a stronger Iran as put here in five to ten years?

If you want the UK to join Trump's war, why don't you just say it?

Ok no answer.

It’s a tough one. I don’t want Iran to hold the world to ransom with greater weapon capability in five to ten years. That is concerning on many levels.

If people really do just think that issue will go away I’m not sure why.

Well someone needs to because it’s pretty existential.

An emboldened Iran who knows they can do whatever due to the strait is a worse prospect for everyone.

Iran has been emboldened by Trump and the regime is still in place.

Iran will do whatever. They have a clear aim and the lack of interest from the RoW to work on it.

Decades of oppression and developing weapons, no problem.

RainbowBagels · 17/03/2026 12:39

Before Trump started this there may have been a bit of fear from Iran that they would obliterated, but now he's shown himself to be confused and contradictory, with a defence secretary who's strategy amounts to watching movies and someone who has pissed off his allies to the extent that they are now reluctant to support him. As they say, better to be thought of as a fool...

It's a strong warning for sure about what the US could do if the Iranian regime continues to interfere with ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

They do have form for not heeding warnings though.

The Telegraph report that, Experts have warned that bombing Kharg Island’s oil facilities could push surging prices even higher, as it would effectively remove the entirety of Iran’s crude exports from the market.

It's a strong warning for sure about what the US could do if the Iranian regime continues to interfere with ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz

If only he hadn’t bombed Iran in the first place.

If he hadn’t got Americans allies backs up by siding with his friend Putin for invading a foreign country (makes me wonder whether this was planned)

Or trying to penalise those trading partners with the US with his tariff ideas.

If he and Vance hadn’t attacked Zelensky on tv with which made them look like a couple of school bullies instead of President and Vice President of the USA

If only he hadn’t sacked those that could have pointed out the pitfalls of his sudden flights of fancy

If only he would look around and realise we are no longer in the 1970s

Yes America could do a lot of things but atm they are all things that would have been unnecessary if Trump had just given himself 5 minutes to research and consult with people who are experts in the field before opening his mouth and issuing orders

This is a man who thought tariffs would make things cheaper for the American people.

Not the greatest endorsement is it, unless you are someone who likes far right conspiracy theories.

It's a bad sign when even a "far right conspiracy theorist" thinks Trump has gone too far!

Early in this administration, high-ranking Israeli officials and influential members of the American media deployed a misinformation campaign that wholly undermined your America First platform and sowed pro-war sentiments to encourage a war with Iran,” he said.

“This echo chamber was used to deceive you into believing that Iran posed an imminent threat to the United States, and that should you strike now, there was a clear path to a swift victory,” he said.

“This was a lie and is the same tactic the Israelis used to draw us into the disastrous Iraq war that cost our nation the lives of thousands of our best men and women,” Kent said.

“I cannot support sending the next generation off to fight and die in a war that serves no benefit to the American people nor justifies the cost of American lives,”

Someone needs to explain what can be done when Iran gets to being an imminent threat. Given the desire for weapons and stated aims.

Waiting for that seems risky. But if someone has a way to deal with an even stronger Iran then they should say so.

Joe Kent, is an American veteran and a patriot, he is putting America first.

His wife, also a soldier was killed whilst fighting against ISIS. Many veterans know the true cost that this war has already cost (in lives and military assets destroyed) and do not want to lose more.

Especially not for someone like Trump, who has never served.

On the Nuclear issue despite Trump boasting about "obliterating" Iran's nuclear installations last June, there's still the case of the missing 400kg of enriched uranium which Iran were enriching up to 60%.

The operative question should be how long does it take to enrich 60% uranium to weapons grade. The answer is anywhere between 12 to 25 days. We're on day 18 of the War.
