"The threshold to ban a protest is high in Britain, with the police saying this was the first time the power had been invoked in 14 years, but the risks of public disorder were "so severe" it was right to block it. The ban also applies to any counter-protest marches.
The Islamic Human Rights Commission has previously said on X that the march was being held in support of Palestinian liberation.
Police said that previous Al Quds marches have resulted in arrests for supporting terrorist organisations and anti-Semitic hate crimes, and said that even with the ban in place they were facing a "challenging, potentially violent weekend".
"We have taken into consideration the likely impact on protests of the volatile situation in the Middle East, with the Iranian regime attacking British allies and military bases overseas," the police statement published late on Tuesday said."

I find the suppressing of protest really worrying but if the police genuinely can’t keep people safe what are the alternatives?

Not supporting proscribed groups or hate crimes.
Also not causing criminal damage or going prepared to start a fight with people who have opposing views.

Amiacoolorwarmcolour · 11/03/2026 10:19

I agree with the ban.

AnneLovesGilbert · 11/03/2026 10:23

This march should have been banned years ago. It’s in support of a regime which sponsors terrorism and wishes for our destruction, for Israel to cease to exist, for Jews to be eliminated, and out of some sort of suicidal empathy we’ve been letting them. Iran has been targeting British air bases ffs, trying to kill Brits on British territory. It’s a bit late but of course it’s good they can’t march around spreading hate in London and terrifying people.

I’m sorry I don’t understand your point, or perhaps you didn’t understand what I wrote?

Erin1975 · 11/03/2026 10:45

The headline is very misleading. The march is not "pro-Iran", it is people marching in support of Palestine.

A static protest is still going ahead.

caringcarer · 11/03/2026 10:53

I think these pointless protest marches supporting or opposing what happens in other countries is a total waste of police resources and puts yet more financial strain on our country. I think we should stop poking our noses into other countries business unless it directly affects our country. Signing a petition is just as meaningful but does not cost a fortune.

The headline is very misleading. The march is not "pro-Iran", it is people marching in support of Palestine.

In a statement, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said: "I am satisfied doing so is necessary to prevent serious public disorder, due to the scale of the protest and multiple counter-protests, in the context of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

"Should a stationary demonstration proceed, the police will be able to apply strict conditions. I expect to see the full force of the law applied to anyone spreading hatred and division instead of exercising their right to peaceful protest."

Assistant Commissioner Ade Adelekan, public order lead for the Met, said that the ban applied to the "Al Quds march and any associated counter-protest marches" and would be in place from 16:00 on Wednesday, to last one month.

"The Al Quds march is uniquely contentious having originated in Iran and in London is organised by the Islamic Human Rights Commission, an organisation supportive of the Iranian regime," he added.

I used the headline in the article. I linked several articles from different news outlets all talking about the march being banned.

Fir reference:

"The Al Quds march is uniquely contentious having originated in Iran and in London is organised by the Islamic Human Rights Commission, an organisation supportive of the Iranian regime," he added."

So originated in Iran and organised by the Islamic HRC supportive of the IRANIAN regime. There's no mention of Palestine.

Quds Day officially known as International Quds Day is an annual pro-Palestinian event held on the last Friday of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan to express support for Palestinians and oppose Israel and Zionism. It takes its name from the Arabic name for Jerusalem: al-Quds.

The event was first held in 1979 in Iran, shortly after the Iranian Revolution. The day exists partly in opposition to Israel's Jerusalem Day, which has been celebrated by Israelis since May 1968 and was declared a national holiday by the Knesset in 1998. Today, rallies are held on Quds Day in various countries in the Muslim world, as well as in non-Muslim communities around the world, in protest against the Israeli occupation of East Jerusalem.

Thank you for your information. Seems a little different to the articles.

Sadly, people appear to be unable to protest peacefully without concern for safety of all, so it appears it is to be banned.

As mentioned:

THE Home Office has approved the Metropolitan Police’s request to ban a pro-Iran march this weekend amid concerns over “disorder”.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood confirmed she has banned the Al Quds march on Sunday and warned the “full force of the law” would be applied to “anyone spreading hatred and division”.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood confirmed the march would be banned.

Protesters march in London to the US Embassy to call for an end to attacks on Iran, holding signs that read "STOP Bombing IRAN" and one protester holding a portrait of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

A Labour minister broke ranks yesterday to demand the Home Office ban the pro-Iran march. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said in a statement: “I have approved the Metropolitan Police’s request to ban the Al Quds march.

Perhaps different organisations view tge march has different reasons?

"The government has approved a request from the police to ban the Al Quds Day march in London on Sunday to prevent "serious public disorder" given the conflict in the Middle East, the home secretary has said.

The Metropolitan Police asked for the ban saying it was concerned about the high number of protesters and counter-protesters, adding the march organisers were "supportive of the Iranian regime" .

The Islamic Human Rights Commission, who organise the annual march, insist it is a peaceful, pro-Palestinian event. It says a static protest will take place instead."

I'm assuming the police and possibly counter terrorism have some reason to call for a ban. Afterall, Iran was behind around 20 foiled terrorist attacks on the UK.

No it's the Al quds, fuck all to do Palestine except that Palestine is a proxy war for the Iranians.

Individual Liberty has limits to ensure the liberty of society at large and the security and liberty of minorities. The liberties and security of Jews in this country are actively limited by the actions of the Iranian terror state. It actively threatens the peace and security of this country as a whole, and a minority community in particular.

Is antisemitism a problem in the UK?

Has it risen dramatically?

The answer to those questions is yes.

Racism and antisemitism are awful and need addressing, would you not agree?
