Over 12,000 feared dead after Iran protests

Report by CBS News:

Information trickling out of Iran on Tuesday suggests that a crackdown by authorities to end more than two weeks of widespread anti-government protests has likely been far more deadly than activists outside the country have reported. With phone lines opening back up for calls from inside the Islamic Republic, two sources, including one inside Iran, told CBS News on Tuesday that at least 12,000, and possibly as many as 20,000 people have been killed.

Britain's Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper said in Parliament on Tuesday that the U.K. government believed there "may have been 2,000 people killed, there have been more. My fear is that the number may prove to be significantly higher."

The truth has been incredibly difficult to piece together due to Iran's hardline rulers cutting off internet access and phone service in the country for the last five days. While a complete internet shutdown in Iran remained in place for a fifth day, some Iranians were able to make phone calls out of the country on Tuesday, though it was still not possible to call into Iran from outside.

A source inside Iran who was able to call out told CBS News on Tuesday that activist groups working to compile a full death toll from the protests, based on reports from medical officials across the country, believed the toll was at least 12,000, and possibly as high as 20,000.

CBS News has not been able to independently verify the massive death toll indicated by the source, which is some many times larger than the numbers reported by most activist groups independently in recent days — though those groups have always made it clear that their tallies are likely underestimated.

The opposition Iran International television network said Tuesday that its information suggested about 12,000 people were killed. A source in Washington with contacts in Iran told CBS News on Tuesday that a credible source had told him the toll was likely between 10,000 and 12,000.

The footage today is utterly chilling. People flying the flag if the Islamic Republic that has just butchered 10s of 1000s of its own people, carrying placards of the Ayatollah saying 'right side of history', calling for the deproscription of Iranian proxy Hezbollah. A man doing a nazi salute. The link between Islamism, Pro-Palestinian activism and the Iranian regime as clear as day.

That wing of the pro-Pal movement has come out today loud and clear. The pro-Pals who are just in favour of justice & human rights are still very quiet.

Agree.

If I were a pro Pal who was genuinely in favour of justice & human rights I would be speaking out loudly against Iran right now. Genuine people amongst the pro Pals & Israel supporters should find themselves on the same page with regard to Iran.

But where are they? Mostly silent on Iran with a couple of honourable exceptions.

I'm not sure what point you are trying to make here? What do you think the US Democrats would have done to help the Iranian people? What are the EU doing? If you are just wanting to rant about Trump then there are plenty of threads about that.

I don’t get it either. First pp says Trump does nothing to help, then in the next post that he does do something, but that it’s the wrong thing and that the democrats should stop him (?).
Meanwhile Zelensky criticised Europe’s inaction in his recent speech in Davos: “If the (Tehran) regime survives, it sends a clear signal to every bully: kill enough people and stay in power,”

Oh, by the way, Trump sent "an Armada" - whatever the fuck that means... -

To Iran....

You have to laugh if it was'nt so serious...

Why has no-one got the balls in USA seriously got it that this man has no longer got his faculties about him....

Wish the Democrats would get their shit together....

Meanwhile Putin. Fuck. 'm all

What should be happening? What would the Democrats be doing in your view

It’s funny how all those decades when black men were being murdered by police in the US no one claimed it was becoming a fascist state. 2 white peoples get shot and suddenly it is..?
Sorry, derail. And I’m no Trump supporter but America has looong had two (or maybe 3) tier justice it’s just that it usually affects black and brown people so the white liberals don’t seem to get as upset about it.
Anyway, God only knows what the solution is now in Iran, and thank you to the people with knowledge of the geography of the region.
I really want to do some reading on the Middle East because, despite having a slight connection there, my knowledge is anecdotal. If anyone can recommend any good books ( as neutral as possible) I’d be grateful.
