Over 12,000 feared dead after Iran protests

Report by CBS News:

Information trickling out of Iran on Tuesday suggests that a crackdown by authorities to end more than two weeks of widespread anti-government protests has likely been far more deadly than activists outside the country have reported. With phone lines opening back up for calls from inside the Islamic Republic, two sources, including one inside Iran, told CBS News on Tuesday that at least 12,000, and possibly as many as 20,000 people have been killed.

Britain's Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper said in Parliament on Tuesday that the U.K. government believed there "may have been 2,000 people killed, there have been more. My fear is that the number may prove to be significantly higher."

The truth has been incredibly difficult to piece together due to Iran's hardline rulers cutting off internet access and phone service in the country for the last five days. While a complete internet shutdown in Iran remained in place for a fifth day, some Iranians were able to make phone calls out of the country on Tuesday, though it was still not possible to call into Iran from outside.

A source inside Iran who was able to call out told CBS News on Tuesday that activist groups working to compile a full death toll from the protests, based on reports from medical officials across the country, believed the toll was at least 12,000, and possibly as high as 20,000.

CBS News has not been able to independently verify the massive death toll indicated by the source, which is some many times larger than the numbers reported by most activist groups independently in recent days — though those groups have always made it clear that their tallies are likely underestimated.

The opposition Iran International television network said Tuesday that its information suggested about 12,000 people were killed. A source in Washington with contacts in Iran told CBS News on Tuesday that a credible source had told him the toll was likely between 10,000 and 12,000.

They are very quiet now the Palestinian supporters.
It stands out massively whether you want it to be mentioned or not.

This. It’s very likely in 2 weeks the regime has murdered the equivalent of 25% of the total Gaza death toll over the whole 2 years. The left’s complete loyalty to whoever ‘isn’t the West’ is baffling.

When neither side is “the West” or allies to the West they don’t know what to think so stay silent.

The thought of Erfan Soltani being hanged in public tomorrow is making me feel ill to the pit of my stomach. Why are all the omnicausers being so silent now? As I always knew, the pro-Gaza lobby are either Islamists or people who will tolerate any atrocity in the cause of self-flagellating anti-Westernism. Remember whose side they have been on for the last two years.

It’s just too awful. So sad. Some really brave stories but also just horror.

MrsKateColumbo · 14/01/2026 11:25

It's so shocking and upsetting, young people trying to change the corrupt and evil system. I dont really know what the answer is but it's geart breaking.

So awful. I dislike Trump but hope his threats make this disgusting regime think twice about murdering anyone else.

Yes and in Iran, which is what this thread is about, at least 12000 have been killed in the space of weeks. It's literally in the title.

I think you'll find that an extra 0 crept into the original post. I believe the current estimates are 2,000 to 2,500 which is still horrendous but a long way off 12,000.

An extra 0 did not creep into the original post.

The 12,000 are estimates from people within Iran at the moment. As I state in the first post.

We won't know the full extent of the killings for a while but it is already over 2,500 verified deaths according to multiple sources and will no doubt be higher once all the bodies are counted.

Sky News: At least 2,571 people have died so far during the ongoing protests in Iran, according to deaths verified by HRANA, an Iranian human rights organisation and news agency. These numbers were echoed by an Iranian official via Reuters.

Verifying protests and deaths in Iran - amid brutal crackdown and internet shutdown

Sky News' Data and Forensics team has been working to verify protest footage emerging from Iranian defiance of the nationwide internet shutdown. Here's what we have established about the protests and deaths so far.

Apologies. Yes that article does claim the stated number. All the articles I'd read had the much lower estimate.

It's ok.

But I did post a link in my first post to an article mentioning the higher estimate.

Will be almost afraid to read the news tomorrow for fear of what more horrors may come to light.

I agree Twiglets. When the protests first started in Iran I was hopeful the regime would be overthrown quite quickly but it’s not the case. It’s so tragic.

OpheliaIsntMad · 14/01/2026 21:42

Will Trump do something? I’m worried about how things could spiral if he does …. And I’m worried about the future for the Iranian protesters if they don’t get support.

More than 30,000 may have been killed in Iran protests, officials say — report

Iranian officials say 30,000 people may have been killed over just two days of the nationwide protests earlier this month, Time magazine reports.

The figure, quoted to Time by two unnamed senior officials in the country’s Ministry of Health, is the highest estimated death toll so far. It is far larger than the toll of 3,117 that the Iranian government publicized in recent days.

Time says it is unable to independently verify the figures but that the estimate of 30,000 accords with reports from doctors and other first responders on the ground during the protests.

The magazine reports that, according to the health officials, 30,000 people were killed just between January 8 and 9, in the heat of weeks-long anti-regime protests that spread across the country. Time cites the officials as saying that the country used 18-wheeler trucks instead of ambulances at that time, and ran out of body bags.

Not even on front page of BBC website.

HepzibahGreen · 26/01/2026 00:13

I checked BBC. World news. Nothing. But a man in Australia was knocked off his bike by a kangaroo or something.
So they are reporting that instead.

HepzibahGreen · 26/01/2026 00:18

Sky News has some stuff. But BBC. FFS. I used to think people were paranoid when they said the BBC was biased but now I’m convinced. It’s corrupt as Hell.

Same ... I do still use the BBC as a source of news but no longer have any faith that they are reporting events impartially. Which was supposed to be their unique selling point.

Also just checked the BBC website - and there is still nothing? How is it possible?

NeedToKnow101 · 26/01/2026 06:11

The BBC should be ashamed of themselves. And ITV and Channel 4. Looks like they are on the side of the brutal Islamic regime.
