Israel approves Trump’s plan for ceasefire and hostage release

Israel's government has approved a ceasefire and hostage release agreement following a cabinet vote in the early morning hours of Friday local time.

The agreement is just the first phase of US President Donald Trump's 20-point peace plan, and there's still a number of sticking points to work out.

Here's what's expected to happen in this first phase:

1. A ceasefire in Gaza is expected to take effect early on Saturday, 24 hours after the deal was approved by the Israeli government.
2. Israeli troops will withdraw to a line giving it control of 53% of the Gaza Strip, a spokesperson for the Israeli prime minister's office said. This is the first of three withdrawal stages in Trump's plan.
3. The release of Israeli hostages - alive and dead - being held by Hamas will begin, followed by Israel's release of Palestinian prisoners serving life sentences in Israeli jails as well as detainees from Gaza.

  1. The US is moving up to 200 troops already based in the Middle East to Israel to co-ordinate a multinational force which will monitor the ceasefire, according to US officials.

BBC analysis:

Palestinians are beginning to return to Gaza's north as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu thanks Donald Trump for securing a ceasefire

Forces have pulled back to the lines agreed under Trump's plan, the IDF says, but will continue to "remove any immediate threat"

Hamas has until 12:00 local time (10:00 BST) on Monday to release all Israeli hostages, while Israel will release hundreds of Palestinian detainees

Netanyahu has just announced that Israel is ready to receive all the hostages.

Hamas were pushing for the release of 7 particular prisoners of high value to them (most serving multiple life sentences).

They have now offered to reduce the number of particular high value prisoners to 2 and have offered in exchange to release the hostages today instead of tomorrow.

The 2 they are requesting are Marwan Barghouti, ( serving 5 life sentences plus 40 years) & Ahmad Sadatt, (30 years in prison for crimes including the assassination of an Israeli minister in 2001).

Anybody know why Israel has refused to release Palestinian doctors, Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya and Dr. Marwan al-Hams ?

Rights groups have condemned the decision, citing abuse and neglect in detention.

The Pro-Palestinians really don’t seem to like this ceasefire.
I’m not sure that they want the war to end at all.
Maybe they see it as the wrong kind of peace?

Hamas have lost, Israel have won.

The ceasefire has really stumped them. On what pretext to march now?

No I don’t and I’m more interested in the possibility of the hostages being released today than speculating about that

They were calling for the destruction of Israel yestetday.

Maybe you are.

I also want to know why Dr Hussam and Dr Marwan are both being held hostage by Israel and refusing to release them. Dr Hussam has repeatedly been tortured and has no charge against him.

They were calling for the destruction of Israel yestetday.

That’s what they were calling for all along; nothing to do with genocide, land or anything else. Purely about killing Jews.

SomeoneSomewheree · 12/10/2025 13:14

Some innocent people don't matter more than other innocent people.

Oh I know. They aren't interested in the ceasefire because it was never about Palestinians for some of them.

For someone who is very interested in the facts you certainly engage in a whole load of conjecture

Its not conjecture. There's reams of footage, statements, social media posts. From yesterday and extensively before.

If it’s only conjecture, why weren’t those same people marching in protest for innocent child hostages?

Well the term "pro Palestinian" was used which encompasses a lot of people all across the globe so maybe the poster needs to be a bit more specific about exactly who they are talking about or is the point just to deligitimise everyone?

1457bloom · 12/10/2025 13:31

Israel approves the plan to make Gaza an open air prison 2.0, how kind of them.

I don't think its hard to work out.

That’s what happens when you start a war you cannot win.
Hamas/Gaza lost the war, they don’t get to dictate the terms of the ceasefire.
They should be thankful the big Cheeto wanted the war to end, because none of their Islamic neighbors seems to give a shit about their self induced situation.

So it's fine to be vague and in some instances but not others? Got it

It's the usual double standards on display on this board.

Very true. Countries surrounded them, muslim neighbours, don't seem to care too much.

The Israeli Ministry of Justice has released the names of the 250 Palestinians serving sentences for murder whom they are releasing from prison tomorrow.

And no, the names Marwan Barghouti or Ahmad Sadatt are not on the list.

Edited

It's a affront to justice and humanity that even one terrorist with blood on their hands is released.
