This is a brilliant article.

This will be taught in schools one day and our grandkids will ask us but what did you do when you knew this was happening?

What did you do during the genocide in Gaza? | Arwa Mahdawi

When future generations read about Gaza with horror and wonder how we allowed a livestreamed genocide to happen, what will you say?

That is a disgusting thing to say

You've lost me there.

You think the war in Gaza has made life safer for Israelis?

and i'm not saying or implying that any attacks are justified, of course they are not ....in any shape or form.

If you'd bothered to read an earlier post, i made this 100% clear.

How is "Deutschland den Deutschen" any more offensive (it makes me shudder!) than "may your village burn" or "death to the Arabs"?

If you're going to condition your objection to nationalist fervour on "who does it": just come out and say so!

Incidentally: I'm a fluent German speaker and nothing has horrified me quite as much as German Twitter opposite Palestinians.

Why are you moving the goalposts?
@SharonEllis initially said:

”I said it was ACCUSED of being an ethnostate i.e. being a homeland for the Jews is seen as something wrong, linked to it being accused of settler colonialism, ie its legitimacy as a homeland for Jewish people is delegitimised.”

To that your response was:

“We may have to politely disagree on "is ethnonationalism intrinsically wrong?" here. Because I genuinely think it is ”

And:

”Personally, I will always find "Deutschland den Deutschen" deeply and viscerally horrifying. And the same goes for Hungary, Israel, and anyone else.”

You’ve jumped from Jews wanting an ethnostate (where they could exercise self-determination and find safety from systemic antisemitism) to ethnonationalism and then to “may your village burn”.
The latter is comparable to “Deutschland den Deutschen”, not the former though, and that’s what SharonEllis was talking about.

You're doing it again. She did not say she thought the war made life safer for Israelis. Stop putting words into people's mouths and stop making excuses for antissemites. Only racists are responsible for racism.

Alexandra2001 · 27/05/2025 09:30

SharonEllis · 27/05/2025 08:13

And have a think about what she can do to combat antisemitism - something we ALL have within our gift.

How about a donation to CST for a start which spends thousands and thousands of pounds every year on defending Jewish organisations and Jewish people going about their daily lives. All need enhanced security because of antisemitic attacks and threats which are part of daily life on this country.

How on earth can i stop antisemitism? How can i reach into the minds of these people and change their hearts?

That starts in schools, in the Police and Justice system, parenting and not voting for parties that promote racism of any kind.

BTW Israel is not above criticism and nor should it be, that is not being antisemitic is it?

I asked a question, in response to be called disgusting, at no point have i made excuses for antisemitism, as well you know, you re just seeking to inflame and provoke.

You said 'Jews' not Israelis.

And participating in repeating this sort of thing will not help at all. You saying 'the war in Israel will ensure Jews are attacked for years to come' means that you either agree with this, agree there's any basis for doing something so disgusting, think that the Jews somehow 'have it coming' or have participating in some way in creating a world filled with bigots, or something else I can't even work out.

Every single time someone says 'well the Jews brought it on themselves because of... whatever' that's terrible. It's just that simple.

I would never, ever, blame 'Muslims' for the actions of 'Muslim governments' or 'Christians' for the actions of 'Christian governments'. That's exactly how this sort of attitude is passed down the generations and means we will never, ever create anything better. And people saying that antisemitism is nothing to do with them so they can't do anything to fix it is awful too. It's all just enormously sad.

No country is above criticism, but the vitriol aimed at Israel, it's people and the Jewish dispora is unique, despite the horrific human rights abuses going on elsewhere, including in the countries attacking Israel.

SharonEllis · 27/05/2025 09:54

I think I'm done with this gaslighting.

Yet its extremely difficult to criticise Israel for its actions in Gaza without being accused of antisemitism and justifying it.

SharonEllis · 27/05/2025 09:57

And by tbe way, I'm off to work for a meeting about one of 2 interfaith projects Im working on, involving Jewish and Muslim organisations, among others. There is always something you can do to further understanding.

Your post typifies what i said earlier....

I have repeated said "Netanyahu" not ALL Israelis, nor have i ever justified attacks on Jews or anyone else.

Plus i never said antisemitism is "nothing to do with me" i said "i cannot stop antisemitism" which is patently obvious.... i then went on to say how it can and should be countered.

ComeAsYouAreAsAFriend · 27/05/2025 10:05

@Alexandra2001 on a thread about the genocide in Gaza there appears to be a lot of posters looking to talk about anything but the genocide.

Alexandra2001 · 27/05/2025 09:18

No i have not, i 've agreed with you recently, in an attempt to keep things civil, you've just thrown it back.... point made.

I ve also been accused of being an antisemite too, again totally unfounded.

I expect everyone to keep things civil as a bare minimum 🤷🏼‍♀️

KittyPup · 27/05/2025 10:17

Unfortunately, Palestinian men and Hamas caused this. On October 7th, they made a choice to go in and murder innocent Jewish civilians. Now they complain when it is done to their own women and children. It’s horrendous what is happening out there, those poor innocent people are suffering. However, it wasn’t Israel who attacked first - why is this conveniently forgotten? They didn’t expect Israel to go so far, nobody did, but their own people started this war.

You surely cannot compare defaced memorials or demonstrations, however distasteful, to that of children burned alive? whole families wiped out? starvation and disease?

One by product of the current action in Gaza is the increase in antisemitism, as i said earlier, the extremists will now and for decades to come, seek revenge on Jews worldwide.

Where on earth did she do that? The strawmanning on this thread (and on several others) is really something else.

One by product of the current action in Gaza is the increase in antisemitism

The rise of antisemitism we’re experiencing is not just a byproduct of the current action in Gaza.
People were already celebrating on October 7th and planning pro Palestine marches in London while the terror attack was still happening (as confirmed by the Metropolitan Police).

“We would not be where we are today were it not for the systematic dehumanization of Palestinians by the western media and the suppression of pro-Palestinian speech. We would not be here if western reporters and Joe Biden hadn’t manufactured consent for the genocide by repeating the incendiary lie that Hamas had beheaded babies. We would not be here if the Biden administration had actually worked towards a ceasefire instead of lying about their efforts and giving Israel carte blancheto do whatever it liked. Eventually history will judge all these people.”

Im not sure this is such a brilliant article. It fails to acknowledge Hamas role in the suffering of Gaza - the only mention of Hamas is to refute the “beheaded babies “ allegation. No mention of the killings/ rapes / hostages.

Biden worked 'tirelessly around the clock' — to prevent a ceasefire

Time to acknowledge that the president chose the circumstances that led to US complicity

The wisdom is to not start something you can’t finish. They made a choice and their people are paying for the consequences of their actions. On October 7th, Hamas attacked civilians and murdered and raped them. Was that okay with you? Or did they deserve it?

I’ve often seen the “beheaded babies allegation” being used as some sort of gotcha, as if the fact that this particular claim had been refuted meant that the murder of over 1200 people on October 7th and the hostage taking didn’t happen either. It’s bizarre.

And the sadistic, tortous horror of those murders, rapes and kidnappingd just glossed over or more usually not mentioned at all.

Surely it should be that ‘we would not be where we were today were it not for the systematic indoctrination of Palestinians by an evil death cult that death is better than life and killing Jews in a holy war for Islam’s supremacy over the land is worth sacrificing themselves and their children for, while Western media, the UN and NGOs in the region looked on and watched as this mass scale abuse took place because it suited their purpose/agenda too.’

It just shows how fucked up this is that the decades of Palestinian terrorism leading up to Oct 7th, which is the reason Israel had to take the security measure it had before Oct 7th, and the real reason surrounding countries won’t take them in, is not even mentioned.
