Caller to R5 live the other day mentioned that the last time the conflict in the ME was discussed on Nicky Campbell's show was March 14.
Considering there are usually 2 topics discussed and that it goes out 5 days a week, that's a lot of shows that haven't been a platform for debate about Israel/Gaza.

And it gets even worse.

BBC1 question time, and you have to go back to October 17 2024 to find a question about the ME. Since Oct 17, dozens of questions about Trump and Ukraine, but strangely Israel / Gaza doesn't feature.
Also, whilst stories about Harry or GCSE results will have a "Have your say" comments section, on the BBC news website, there are none for stories on the current conflict.
LBC not afraid to cover it and to be a platform for a discussion, the BBC obviously are.

Not surprising. People on both sides are so polarised that any sort of sensible debate is pretty much impossible.

This.

What about Sudan OP? Did you check that one too?

Maybe it’s because the globe is nearing WW3 and it’s not a priority?
We have nuclear capable countries at loggerheads. Palestine is irrelevant at present

OK, that may explain the last 10 days, what about the 6 months prior to that ?

The middle east is a long way from the UK, and not likely to be top of many people's priority lists. Add in that there has been a war between various countries in that part of the world for what seems like forever. That may explain why UK news programs are not covering it constantly.

It is also pretty much impossible to have any sort of debate involving Palestine or Israel without attracting criticism for being anti-semetic. Those sorts of accusations get broadcasters hauled through the coals whether they are culpable or not. If you think it is possible to have a reasonable, mannered debate on any topic involving Israel I think you are living in cloud cuckoo land.

The reality is that Palestine is not a priory in most people’s lives. Hamas kicked off on 7/10 and Israel retaliated. Do you honestly believe that the majority of the UK GAF about a remote area that’s been in conflict for decades?

You're right, that for a lot of people in the UK it's not high on their list of priorities, but there is a sizeable and significant proportion for whom it is important, added to which is the fact that there strong economic ties between the UK and Israel which gives the UK "skin in the game".

I disagree, many people i know feel quite strongly about the conflict. How would you or I know either way for majority of the population?

Kakeandkake · 07/05/2025 19:24

I do think most people feel strongly about certain aspects of the conflict, currently many who are aware won't be happy that Israel is not allowing in food or aid to the whole of Gaza. Most people do object to children being starved.

LlynTegid · 07/05/2025 19:25

I think it is important for a significant amount of people. Not just the conflict, but the rise in anti-semitism and other hatred in the UK that seems to have resulted.

Mosaic123 · 07/05/2025 19:26

Nick Ferrari on LBC Radio discusses the Israel situation quite frequently.

You can disagree but the reality is that not many people are actually interested in Gaza.
That’s why it’s not on BBC. 🤷‍♀️

LBC coverage a good attempt, interesting sometimes to see James O'Brien, blow one way then the other.

It's telling that Myska is no more. A loss of talent. I would love to see the NDA she must have had to sign.

Mehdi Hasan pretty good too.

Of course there are people that care, no one doubts it’s important to some. I’m saying that as a whole Palestine is not significant or important in the UK.

I'm genuinely curious how you can be so sure that many people do not care about Gaza. How have you come to this conclusion? Or is this just your assumption?

Do you think most people care about Israelis who are suffering or do you believe they are just as dismissive towards them as they are towards Gazans?

I’m sorry but in the uk, the majority don’t give a fig.
Are you a foreign national or Muslim? I would think if that’s the case then you would care.
If you are a common working class minion, you would not be so bothered about what is happening in Gaza, which is something that’s been going on for decades

PM Programme today, the David Lammy interview was very good. Lammy did not come out well.

There are not tens of thousands on the streets.
There are lots of conflicts and Palestine is just one of them. They are not a priority for the general population of the uk
