Conflict in the Middle East

To find it fascinating that…

Out of the endless, obsessive threads on here about Gaza (“Conflict in the Middle East” LOL just be honest and call it the Gaza/Israel board since no one on here could probably even name another country in the Middle East let alone the numerous other conflicts there) there has not been one thread dedicated to the release of three female hostages yesterday.

Mumsnet is predominantly frequented by women, many of whom claim to have women and girls’ interests at heart and yet photographs of these three young women, who’ve been held at gunpoint by men for more than 15 months, who were made to wear specific outfits and smile for the camera before being released into a terrifying baying mob of masked men wielding machine guns literally stomping on top of Red Cross vans - with at least one of the woman we know for 100% having been the victim of male violence since she’s missing her fingers which they shot off her hand - while the others are very likely to have been sexually abused - doesn’t even warrant a thread.

It’s like maybe most of you that frequent this board don’t actually give a crap about humanitarianism… so I wonder what could be prompting your obsession with this conflict? Hmmm 🤔🤔🤔

What makes you say they are white? Do you know that that is how they identify?

SharonEllis · 20/01/2025 17:40

@Sixpence39 and why do you assume that the OP is white? You seem to be dabbling in a bit of racial profiling there.

stormy4319trevor · 20/01/2025 17:46

@SharonEllis I don't think one can 'identify' as a person of colour? I'm not sure, but it isn't like gender, as far as I know.

Arayofcalm · 20/01/2025 17:53

There is a thread on hostages in general as I just checked. OP if you thought there should be a dedicated thread just on the three women who were released yesterday, then why not make one?

Why would you say it’s because they are white?
Would you not think it’s because they were totally innocent of any wrongdoing?

Yes it is. Particularly for people of mixed heritage.

stormy4319trevor · 20/01/2025 17:58

@SharonEllis I'm not sure, otherwise one could identify out of it. I imagine victims of racism ,due to their skin colour, can assure you this is not the case.

Wrong in so many ways.

Pebblesonthebeach40 · 20/01/2025 18:16

The 3 women must have been through hell. Their capture, treatment and released controlled by violent, disgusting sub human 'men'. The parading before release by the well fed, clean and tidy Hamas scum was disgusting. The baying mob of 'innocent' Palestinians around them vile. To be honest I expect this type of grim parading of their 'trophies ' by hamas scum. May hamas scum rot.

The poor women need space, the love of their families and help to deal with their ordeal. May they live long and healthy lives. Respect to them.

Yes the scenes were absolutely shocking...spoke volumes

stormy4319trevor · 20/01/2025 18:24

I certainly hope the women freed find comfort and support in their recovery from trauma, and that they enjoy peace and happiness in the rest of their lives. I can't imagine how terrifying these long months must have been for them, and how heart breaking for their families. It's a blessing they are home, and I pray the ceasefire lasts so that the other hostages can also go home.

Scirocco · 20/01/2025 18:35

There are threads about the hostage exchange and ceasefire and many of us have posted on them. This is a highly emotional time for many people, including many posters on here, and I know I for one am finding it difficult to find the words to express how I feel. It's worth bearing in mind that people may be being quieter about something because it's a challenging time for them, rather than because they don't care.

Notaflippinclue · 20/01/2025 18:35

One of the Palestinians released last night said conditions were terrible, food was awful no sugar or salt!

SallyWD · 20/01/2025 18:35

But you can be deeply concerned and horrified for these hostages and equally concerned and horrified about the innocent people suffering and dying in Gaza. Most of the victims have been women and children. Over 16000 children have died. You don't need to pick sides you can feel empathy for anyone who's suffering

No salt. That's awful

Can you provide evidence or context for this quote?

Notaflippinclue · 20/01/2025 19:20

'Twas on the BBC last night

Batmanisaplaceinturkey · 20/01/2025 19:23

You can feel horror at many things at the same time. You don't need to pick a side ffs. This situation is awful for all those involved but the reason I post more about Palestinians is because there is no balance, governments dont give a shit, hence I use my voice to try to counteract this, fruitless as it may be.

ChangingHistory · 20/01/2025 19:31

I don't frequent the board so I am surprised, my X feed is full of them.

I was surprised they were treated like that at release, the optics are terrible and I would have thought Hamas would have wanted to present a different image to the world.

I want to know more about the prisoners released by Israel in exchange. Is there a site somewhere that lists them and the reason for their detention? I was surprised to see so many women.

I am hoping the babies and children are next released, surely without the screaming gunmen surrounding them.

BakedAlaska12 · 20/01/2025 19:33

So thankful that 3 hostages have been released 🎗️🎗️🎗️

Just an utter disgrace that Hamas has demanded evil perpetrators back, such as, Mahamud, serving 48 life sentence -

Also set to be released is Mahmud Abu Warda, who is serving 48 life sentences for planning and executing multiple terror attacks, including the 1996 murder of 45 Israelis in two bus bombings in Jerusalem.

ChangingHistory · 20/01/2025 19:37

Also I watched the BBC footage of the hostage release and was amazed that it wasn't totally biased towards the Palestinian side as most press has been. There was definitely some minimising language but they brought attention to how the women were kidnapped and what had happened to them and one of the correspondents spoke about his cousin who was a hostage and had seen his child killed before he was taken.

BooToYouHalloween · 20/01/2025 19:40

The general thread on the hostages has been going for months and only had a few comments from yesterday. The scenes yesterday were absolutely shocking and I was waiting to see if anyone started one about that specifically especially given they were across all the front pages today. No one did. Strange.

My thread is not about the hostages themselves but about the utter lack of compassion anyone on here seems to have for three women who have been held hostage for over a year at the hands of these monsters. (And as we can tell from the scenes they set up yesterday, they are indeed monsters.) With so many threads about VAWG across Mumsnet it doesn’t compute that. But then… it does. Because some women and girls are not worthy of the same compassion as others.

By the way did you know that before the Doron, Romi and Emily were allowed to leave they were forced (again, at gunpoint) to pose with “goodie bags” and certificates for propaganda videos? Utterly depraved.

Yes we did no. It's on all major news outlets.

Some of the terrorists who are being exchanged for babies (a 2 and 5 year old are among the hostages)

And what do you think about it? Was it a nice gesture? Proof that spending 15 months at gunpoint was the equivalent of a spa day?
