Palestinian children don't get PTSD

This really got to me today.

"In Gaza there is no post (traumatic) because the trauma is repetitive and ongoing and continuous."

I feel so sorry for these children and I can't believe our government is supporting this genocide.

Yes. It's horrific.

Auvergne63 · 02/12/2023 16:15

No words.

Toothyfruity · 02/12/2023 16:20

I can't see how the population will recover from what's happening at the moment. The brutality and terror is inconceivable. An entire generation of children completely and utterly traumatised. And as OP says it's trauma heaped upon trauma. It's a disaster.

exactly, can’t see how, if they even come out of this alive to recover. 😢

Rachna83 · 02/12/2023 17:09

That's horrific and very sad. One thing I am grateful for is that the world is slowly waking up and seeing what is happening and what has been happening for a long time before October 7.
Thank you for sharing op.

I understand what you are saying and it is hard not to be despondent at the lack of action by governments. However it is important to keep raising awareness and doing what we can. As a collective this can bring about a difference. I have noticed a change in reporting and the language used. Israel has been condemned for the civilian casualties in the north. So yes the protests have certainly raised the profile of the cause. When they start saying they want to bring in laws to stop the protests (there was no legal basis to do so on remembrance weekend) and action like the BDS movement that means it is effective.

HeidiInTheBigCity · 02/12/2023 18:43

Back when I travelled to Palestine for the very first time - this seems like ages ago, now - I was struck by how small many of the people I encountered were.

I am a European woman of average height, and I found myself, literally, speaking to Palestinian men "at eye level" and, literally, "looking down upon" women.

Then, I met their parents and their younger siblings! And while, on average, I would still say that the average British person is taller than the average Palestinian one (just like the average Dutch person is taller than your average Brit), these people were noticeable less short.

I eventually mentioned this to a friend I had recently made, a doctor. She sort of laughed at me and said "what you are seeing is children who grew up during a war - the people you think are short were children during the worst of the 1st intifada! They stayed short because they never had enough! Not enough food, not enough safety, not enough of anything. They were traumatised, and they just stopped growing!"

Two decades later, I am still taken aback by her words (but she was right)!

sunshinesupermum · 02/12/2023 19:02

Do you also worry about the children bombarded in Ukraine, Yemen, Syria, Somalia, Sudan etc etc.

beigecartoon · 02/12/2023 19:07

@HeidiInTheBigCity omg that is so sad. Malnourished, traumatised and affecting their physical stature.

And some posters attempting to derail, again, showing zero empathy for Palestinians.

Palestinian children don't really get to be children.

They don't really, but this is the fault of Hamas. Children shouldn't be indoctrinated, or forced to be child soldiers and they certainly shouldn't have to live with terrorists who have their bases in their hospitals and schools.

thatone · 02/12/2023 19:21

@Rezola this started happening long before Hamas appeared.

It is due to living under occupation next to a neighbour that has at its disposal the entire arsenal of the biggest superpower on earth.

Awful as Hamas is, Hamas is a result of many different factors and Hamas was not created in a vacuum. It is extremely disingenuous and misleading to suggest that all the problems are due to Hamas.

beigecartoon · 02/12/2023 19:22

Not to mnetion Israel tightly controlling the food allowed in. It calculated the minimum number of calories required to sustain life.

thatone · 02/12/2023 19:22

A neighbour that is targetting women and children in order to suppress the Palestinian birthrate.

thatone · 02/12/2023 19:23

A neighbour that does not comply with any UN resolutions or distinguish between children and adults.

Yes because I am horrified by what we as a species regularly do to our young to futher our political desires. We are an abhorrent primate and the planet would do better without us.

Oh dear. The whatabouters are here to justify the killing of thousands of innocent children.

PeasfullPerson · 02/12/2023 19:56

Let’s concentrate on the original post. Yes it’s appalling and hard to imagine that a child who has been through so much repetitive trauma will ever feel safe. I hope they will live to experience a world in which their life is truly valued enough to be protected, not just have lip service paid to it, and that they feel able to believe it.

Depdawg We can take a good guess.

beigecartoon · 02/12/2023 20:11

@Depdawg @sunshinesupermum derailing is against mn rules. Please direct us to your personal threads of concern for these children as you’re obviously so concerned about them.

that said out of respect for Palestinian children please try to keep on topic here otherwise it just seems like you don’t give two hoots about them and are just here to derail and generally bother us.

feralunderclass · 02/12/2023 20:28

This is from July and focuses on the West Bank. The situation is much worse now. Prolonged low level trauma is worse for the brain than a single, high level traumatic event. I don't know how these children keep going 😢
