Wow. I realise these incidents are on the up but that’s so blatant. She goes on to dissemble:

She continued: “I do not support the killing of civilians, of course, but I support Hamas and Palestinians’ rights to stand up for themselves.”

She openly supports Hamas. This is a medical student. She also stated that the banner referred to the Israeli government not Jewish people or Israelis in general. Yeah, alright love, pull the other one it has got bells on…

I’m not sure what I’m asking here- just so shocked to see this.

‘It’s against the Israeli government’: Student Marie Andersen tries to defend vile anti-Semitic sign after global fury

Norwegian medical student Marie Andersen has attempted to defend her anti-Semitic poster as she insisted it was about the "Israeli government" while it showed the Star of David being binned next to the words “keep the world clean”.

I have watched antisemitism creeping into the mainstream, particularly via the "anti imperial" left (who don't understand what imperialism is) and it's been a slow but powerful process.

I would have always considered myself left leaning and was comfortable with that. There was some issues I would have disagreed with the stance of the left and that used to be okay. However, the mainstream left has changed and they make me increasingly uncomfortable. In order to be part of the left you must agree with them on all issues and any dissent means you are a far right fascist. I just don’t agree that you can take any conflict in Middle East and have clear bad guys and good guys. Too much has happened there and too many innocents have lost their lives.

Some of the wording people use makes it sound like the Jews don’t belong there and portrays them as colonists. If they don’t belong there where do they belong. The Palestinians also belong there. Both people should get to live their lives in peace and prosperity.

However, the question that I keep coming back to is that if Israel are to be seen as anyway weak or let attacks on them slide will the Jewish people be safe from their neighbouring countries? That is why I have always felt a bit uncomfortable by the lefts position on this conflict. Having said that I don’t want innocents anywhere to suffer and die.

To me it looks like a resolution in the region is further away than ever before.

Basically in my long ramble what I am trying to say is I think it’s incredibly dangerous when as a society we take on opinions or beliefs because they align with our politics. It’s becoming apparent how some of the atrocities of the past occurred tbh and it looks plausible for them to happen again.

Agreed @LemonyTicket

Crunching even though I vote Tory, I agree with your point. I have noticed what used to be the liberal left become the intolerant (woke) left. There used to be more a fight for freedoms eg I was appalled the left supported covid lock downs - it would never have done so in the past. The left seems to have lost its way in having "one right view" rather than being a broad church of tolerance of different view points (and I am not suggesting we Tories are perfect on this either).

One of the long standing problems with English law has been doing some things is illegal if it creates a breach of the peace. That is why is you go swimming naked on your own in a mountain lake you don't break the law but if you try walking naked down Oxford Street you might be. It is the reaction of those around you that can decide if the police act or not which has always felt very wrong to me. Eg if people in a public area of the UK don't like me showing bare arms that should not mean I have to cover my arms. Similarly if in a 99% non muslim area people don't like to see muslim head covering it shouldn't be wrong to wear it just because you are in a group of people who don't like it. In other words force should not prevail over right.

It is why I support the right to burn of the koran, bible or anything else (which is lawful) in some countries in Europe where the police go out and allow the burning even if violent muslim and other protestors around are not happy about this. However when people go over the boundary into breaking the law such as calling to kill all the jews then the law does prohibit threats to kill.

I hope the police would be as accommodating of 100,000 jews marching in London in support of Israel as much as they let 100,000 people some chanting for jihad have their demonstration.

Yes, police powers to prevent public order offences are in practice mob rule enforced by the State as and when it sees fit. The government could end that, if it wanted to, by placing limits on those powers. It chooses not to.

You won't get 100,000 people to march in London in support of Israel, short of something truly apocalyptic happening. And mob rule is largely a numbers game.

@Xenia I agree but probably not in such an eloquent way. I have always been a Labour supporter but even i have doubted the 'you have to agree on everything or your cancelled' angle such as with gender politics.
I won't be told what to believe.

Healthy debate has disappeared. Opposing views are ok.

Stick her in the bin!

charasala · 25/10/2023 12:11

Probably that symbol meant to government but not people.

Yes, I saw an image of it at the London march, it's on Tracy Ann Oberman's x account.

Bloody hell. That's appalling.

No. It can only mean one thing.
