I just want to preface this by saying I am not Jewish but I am shocked at the things by said online if you show any feeling or empathy toward Israel and the situation at all.

I was on Instagram earlier and a famous person had posted a few posts one raising awareness and funds for Gaza and one for a family affected by the killings on the kibbutzim' No opinion. No leaning either way. Just a plea to humanity.

The amount of people bullied, heckled, made personal threats to by pro Hamas supporters was shocking... even celebrating the events and accusing Israel of atrocities worse than the 'nazi's'

It has really unsettled me all day. It seems any opinion other than the 'right' one leads to public condemnation and ostracism. It's just horrible. I hate to think how I would feel if I were Jewish.

@Stomacharmeleon
You should've seen the amount of laughing emojis used on every single social media post where people were asking for information about their loved ones directly after Hamas' terror attack. And the comments, holy shit the comments. It was absolutely revolting. Thousands upon thousands of people taunting the people who were just wanting to know if their loved ones were murdered or kidnapped.

Toothyfruity · 21/10/2023 23:08

That is disgusting.

But that's unfortunately happening on both sides. I was going to link to an Israeli woman on Instagram who posts videos mocking the current crisis I'm Gaza (for example by dressing up as a Palestinian mother crying over her dead baby and saying that these babies aren't actually being killed) but in the last hour or two she's made her profile private. But here's a link to that video https://www.instagram.com/reel/Cyq2JP-ubwS/?igshid=NjIwNzIyMDk2Mg==

It doesn't change the fact that Israel is committing ethnic cleansing and even genocide in Gaza at the moment.

Oh I'm sorry are we only allowed talk about it when it happens on one side?

Story of this genocide really. Can't call it a war or a conflict because it's actually ethnic cleansing and genocide.

There was one picture of young Israelis fleeing across a field from the massacre at the Nova festival.
People were gleefully posting 'Look at the settlers running away, see how they don't belong on this land'. Unarmed civillians were fleeing for their lives for a mssacre and were being taunted for not staying to be killed by terrorists.
Like this person on twitter: https://x.com/abierkhatib/status/1710556572517064847?s=20
Always posting about Palestinian rights. Since she also posts some left wing israelis, i thought potentially someone genuinely interested in peace, soemone with whom there could be a dialogue, but actually she had no problem celebrating innocent Israelis being mowed down.

Speaking of not so nice messages, what do we all think of the messages sent to people in Gaza by phone yesterday saying that anyone who remains in the north will be considered a terrorist accomplice and presumably bombed?

I mean I can't see it making a huge difference because they're already bombing civilians but I guess they'll use this to deny that these people are civilians now.

Threatening a people with violence and murder in order to make them leave their homes is ethnic cleansing.

We're they claiming to be "pro Hamas?"

I've seen loads of Israelis on social media having parties and dancing/singing etc about airstrikes and celebrating the death toll in Gaza. One girl (with a strong American accent so she certainly wasn't born there) was saying there is no sweeter sound than that of the IDF missiles raining down upon the Arabs and that it warmed her heart dearly.

But I can see a massive shift. People who I know who were pro Israeli just because they are Islamophobic are now saying they cannot support this genocide. Even Jewish people who were previously pro Israel are now very conflicted, and some outright saying it's wrong. According to Jewish Voice for Peace, 40% of young Jewish people in US believe Israel is an apartheid state.

Yes no wonder so many posters insist being Palestinian equals being a member of Hamas, and here’s the Israeli government reinforcing that. Presumably even tiny babies in the NICU are Hamas members or supporters 🙄

How awful is that. We will see you as terrorists because we said so. What on earth. Those poor families.

Stomacharmeleon · 22/10/2023 14:02

In the same respect the far right wing government of Israel does not represent everyone and particularly the peace loving people who danced at that festival and massacred by terrorists. Same for the kibbutz dwellers. Surely if we are going to offer that curtesy to Palestinians we should do the same for Israeli's?

I really didn't make the comment I made to point the finger either side but merely to point out any sympathy or humanity toward to suffering of those people in Israel who were murdered is shot down and I don't think that's ok.

Yes they were 'pro-Hamas' online and said awful things likening the Israeli government as 'worse than nazi's' Calling for death to Jews.

I also watched channel 4 news in the week and a senior member of Hamas was interviewed. He refused to call hostages exactly that and said they were 'prisoners of war'. Everything that was put to him regarding the murdering of children was denied.... where is the evidence?

I do not agree with children either side being killed whether by sword or rocket but this not a new thing. The Tit for tat has been going on for years. Only in the past few months a rabbi from London lost his wife and children to a Hamas gunman who mowed them down on their way to a Passover meal. The strong reaction now comes from the direct events of two weeks ago. What did Hamas assume would happen? Why bite the hand that feeds your own people? Why destroy infrastructure that was left when Israel withdrew from Gaza? Why hide behind the women and children? They are cowards who have no respect for human life and whose whole mantra is the destruction of the Jews.

I am sorry if this is garbled. I just think it goes both ways. Yes from you tube/ tick-tock both sides have behaved badly... celebrating death is an abomination. I just don't know the answer.....I am not sure there is one.

TeacupKitty · 22/10/2023 14:17

The problem is that we rarely see any condemnation of Israel from pro-Israelis. Yet it’s expected constantly from anyone supporting Palestinians who’ve already condemned Hamas. What about the Palestinians in the West Bank where Hamas don’t operate? What is the excuse for the killing and land grabbing happening there?

I assume Israeli lives matter more for Israelis? Just like British lives matter more for the British government than non British lives.

Not sure what whiteness has to do with it. Half of Israelis are descended from refugees from middle eastern countries, you can't really tell them apart from Palestinians (they also have Palestinians with light skin and blue eyes - guess the crusaders have something to answer for there - so I dunno). And not forgetting the Thais massacred (they're quite dark) and the Palestinian Israelis murdered including Bedouin who are really very dark. Oh, and some Ethiopian Israelis too (they are actually black!) I believe. Is that dark enough for you? Sorry that whiter Eruopean descended Israelis also got massacred and kidnapped

Something to consider ... Not sure why Ethiopian Israelis were being given contraceptives without their consent. You can think about that yourself.
