Getting pregnant aged 37

Hello,
I have a 14 month old dd who was conceived within a couple of months of trying when i was 35. I turned 37 last month and am suddenly desperate for another baby. I am really worried about my age. Does the fact that i got preg so easily two years ago count in my favour or will my fertilty have gone into freefall regardless? I can't really find any info on success rate of second pregnancies at my age. My maternal grandmother and great grandmother both had children in their late 30s - i don't know if this goes in my favour or not. My periods are regular and i am pretty sure i am ovulating. due to breast-feeding until my tot was 12 months i've only had 3 proper periods since the birth.
I would love to hear from anyone who conceived in their late 30s and how easy or not this was.

Hi Jan9ne,

I'm in a slightly different position to you as I am 32 weeks PG with our first child at the age of 34. We also fell pregnant straight away (amazingly), but what I was going to say, is that if you search online, you can order a Female Fertility Test. It's another "Pee on a stick" test and it basically measures your level of fertility. I think they're fairly cheap.

If you don't get any line, your fertile level is still high. Mine didn't produce any line, which I was pleased about, but still amazed and thrilled that we fell PG so quickly.

It may not be as specific as doctors tests, but it may give you an idea...

Hope that helps.

Just search on Female Fertility Test and see what comes up...

Good luck!!

xxx

We conceived DD without trying aged 34. Three years later, we conceived again aged 37. I'm now 33 weeks pregnant and giving birth shortly after my 38th birthday.

Keep your spirits up. I'm sure you will be fine.

Jan9ne · 12/04/2009 21:19

Excellent - thank you both! I will give the fertility test a go

Hi, I am currently 38 weeks pregnant with number 4 and I will be 44 in May; you are a spring chicken by comparison! Number 3 was an accident conceived when I was 40 (became a bit careless because of all the press that fertility plummets in late 30's) and this one was planned. Took at bit longer to conceive than my planned ones but only six months or so. Good luck.

Simplysally · 12/04/2009 21:25

I'm posting here to bookmark this thread as I'm thinking of ttc at 37 also.

My dd is 9 in June (unplanned pg) but I'm worried that I'm a bit past it now .

risingstar · 12/04/2009 21:26

I fell for dd1 and dd2 when I was 27 and 29, fell first time we tried with both. Started trying for dd3 when I was 37, took a year with out any intervention. TBH the stuff i read at the time was full of doom laden stats but one book i read actually said that most people in late 30s/early 40s do fall pregnant if they try and do go to term sucessfully. My top tip would be: don;t read anything on the internet!

Jan9ne · 12/04/2009 21:27

congratulations! Makes me feel a lot more confident. Cheers

I wouldn't fret at all. Generally, a good indicator is when your mother went thru the menopause. Take away 10 years, and generally you are fertile until this age. So if your Mum was 52 til the menopause, you are probably fertile til 42 at least. The other good indicators are that you got pregnant so quickly last time, and your mum and Gran had babies in their late 30s.

I also think the less you fret the better.
I had my first pregnancy at 37. Took a month.
My last pregnancy was at 42. Took a month.
Fret not!

shedragon · 12/04/2009 21:44

Oh, and I was breastfeeding when I got pregnant at 42. Courage, mon amie!

neolara · 12/04/2009 21:47

I started getting pregnant at 34 and am now 39. In that time I have got pregnant 7 times, averaging 2 1/2 months of "trying" before striking lucky. Unfortunately, 4 of those pregnancies ended in miscarriage, but I have two dcs and am currently 19 weeks with no. 3. Incidentally, I suspect my high rate of mc is not necessarily to do with my age but is due to other factors. Such a high mc rate is not at all typical of women in their late 30s and 40s.

Good luck!

I was 35 when I conceived DD and that took 6 months, was 37 when I conceived DS and he was a one hit wonder, I managed to log periods and found out my ovulation date and it worked. Good Luck

I conceived my DD after 2 months (aged 33) and my DS after about 4 months (aged 37).

I was told by the midwife at my booking in appt. that 37 used to put you in the category of "older mothers" but nowadays, as so many women are waiting until later to have children, its no longer considered "old". I'm not sure but I think its now 40+

lizziemun · 12/04/2009 21:53

It took me 2yrs to get pg dd1 at 35yrs. Then 3yrs to get pg with dd2 at 38 then one to pg with ds at 39.

hester · 12/04/2009 21:57

Odds are you'll be fine. Yes, your fertility will be declining, but the fact that you conceived easily and relatively recently suggests it's declining from a pretty high starting point.

Fertility starts declining rapidly from 35, going into freefall from 40. But even at 40, most women can conceive. (I gave birth at 41.)

As you know, bad stuff can happen - there are plenty of young women out there who have experienced secondary infertility. But there's no reason at this stage to think you'll have problems - you probably won't - so don't worry yet!

cece · 12/04/2009 21:59

It took me 7 months when I was 33.

It took me 2 months when I was 37.

At the age of 38 and 39 I had two accidents but both ended in mc.

It took me 7 months to get pg at the age of 41 and currently 35 weeks.

You are a spring chicken! Stop fretting... and go for it.

elvislives · 12/04/2009 22:00

I got pregnant without trying age 43. My first child took 18 months when I was 20, so go figure.

Joolsiam · 13/04/2009 08:35

Took me 3 months to conceive for the first time at age 38 - that sadly ended in MC but am now PG again at 39 - we tried straight after the MC but nothing happened, then left it for 2 months and I've falled straight away !

deanychip · 13/04/2009 08:37

im 6 weeks and i am 39 soon.

deanychip · 13/04/2009 08:38

also my bf was 39 whn she had her 1st, then 43 when she had her 2nd...no probs.

anniecam38 · 13/04/2009 09:32

Im nearly 39, had mc in January, had fallen pg first month of trying with that pregnancy, waited for AF to turn up, tried again, pregnant now-6 weeks.
