AIBU to think this is a false positive?

Hi all,

Thank you in advance for reading my post and any responses.

For context, I lost a baby at 8 weeks and had to take miso 27/28th of Feb. I have had on and off bleeding/spotting since then; either brown DC or bloody DC rather than actual blood. I approached clinic 2 days ago as started getting lower back pain, who have booked me in for scan to check all has left the uterus, and doctors prescribed me antibiotics incase of infection due to the fact it was 6.5 weeks ago and they fee I should have stopped bleeding now . The test they gave me to check pregnancy was negative after 3 weeks, and 2 weeks ago I got a clearblue which said 1-2 weeks and I have taken cheapie tests since then which turned negative around 4 days ago so I haven’t done any since.

My back pain is still there so I randomly decided to test, and I have now got a very faint positive test. My DH thinks I am pregnant again however I don’t think so, due to the bleeding spotting I have had.

These are a picture of the tests, it is hard to see but the line is definitely pink not an evap line.

Do you think it’s likely a false positive from miscarriage or do you think, despite ongoing bleeding, I could possibly be pregnant again? These antibiotics cannot be taken if pregnant which is why I’m unsure.

Again, thank you in advance.

Well, you can’t get a false positive so there is clearly some reading there.
I don’t think it’s out of the realms of possibility you may be pregnant if 6.5 weeks has passed since the miscarriage. I think it’s within 2/3 weeks the hCG should stop appearing on a pregnancy test.
When is the scan booked for?
Everything crossed for you!

Pleatherandlace · 15/04/2026 20:50

Have your been having unprotected sex? If so then yes, you could be pregnant

TTCafterloss14 · 15/04/2026 20:53

Sorry to be silly, but would it still be possible even though I’ve had some sort of bleeding since it happened? Yes, on the days it’s brown DC we have had unprotected sex but probably only every 4 days or so.

I didn’t think if I was still bleeding I could’ve fallen pregnant, perhaps somewhat naive of me! We would be happy if I am though x

Why can’t you get a false positive?

mindutopia · 15/04/2026 21:01

I don’t know those tests and they don’t look hugely positive to me. But I would get a better early test to check.

But it’s totally possible to get pregnant right after a miscarriage. I got pregnant with my youngest about 6 weeks after a d & c for a missed miscarriage. I bled for a lot of those weeks, though it had stopped by the time I actually got pregnant. I also bled fairly heavily (like leaking through pads heavy) from 7-9 weeks with him. It was my cervix bleeding due to irritation, not uterine bleeding, so no impact on the pregnancy.

Silverofthemoon · 15/04/2026 20:59

Why can’t you get a false positive?

Because the second line can only appear in the presence of hCG, the pregnancy hormone.

KimMumsnet · 15/04/2026 21:10

Hi, OP. We hope you don't mind but we've moved your thread to our Conception board now.
Best wishes with TTC.

Because the second line can only appear in the presence of hCG, the pregnancy hormone.

This is what made me think that it may have been a false negative, maybe too diluted?, and that I’ve just continued to have very light positives for the last few weeks. I have done an ovulation test which is also darker though which is why I am a little confused.

I know the picture doesn’t show much but it’s hard to get a good angle, but 100% a light pink line there.

Of course you can get false positives. I've had a few

OP this is bad and incorrect advice.

I didn’t think you could have a false positive, unless HCG is in your system? Only evap lines? Again, perhaps my naivety. I will order some first response for tomorrow as I hear they are the best brand.

Gently, if you have had a positive but then not gone on to experience a pregnancy, it will have been a chemical pregnancy, or a very early loss. Flowers

This was also my understanding as I have had this before too. I am going to assume that my test is still positive due to potential of left over “tissue” and the negative was just a false negative. I will do a first response tomorrow when it arrives and depending on that result, I will contact doctors.

I was getting faint positives for at least 4 weeks after miscarriage. Maybe longer

Thank you for your reply. I expected them to take a while but after I got the 1-2 weeks CB, I would’ve thought they would’ve turned negative within 2 weeks. That was when I tested and it was negative so to get another, albeit faint, positive now is what has thrown me. But I guess it can be explained by the negative test being diluted urine and if there is retained tissue, that may be causing the continuous low HCG to cause a positive. It’s been 6.5 weeks now so hopefully everything clears out and we can go back to TTC once I eventually get my period.

Thank you all. 🫶🏼

This was my false positive. Every other brand test was negative. Had a blood test with 0 HCG and started my period 4 days later.

ClearBlue are renowned for false positives.

I’m sorry but you’re wrong.
What you are saying is ‘bad and incorrect’.

Silverofthemoon · 16/04/2026 08:38

I mean you can get evap lines or indent lines.

You can also rarely test positive for hCG without being pregnant or having recently been pregnant. Certain medical conditions can cause this as well as some drugs, eg fertility treatments. So the test is accurate for hCG but a false positive for pregnancy iyswim.

What you are saying is ‘bad and incorrect’.

I have had multiple false positives with clear blue. Tried and tested with a blood test to confirm. It has been heartbreaking to go through after years of infertility and eventually IVF.

There are multiple threads on MN about clear blue false positives. Also look at their reviews on Amazon. They are a thing. What I'm saying isn't bad or incorrect for me, as it's a lived experience.

That will be leaked dye by a faulty product then. Not actually a false positive, as such. I’d be surprised if the strips OP are using as susceptible. Sorry to hear about your journey - I hope you have/have had a successful pregnancy.

It may be a faulty product but as you can imagine when I first looked at that test (and it's happened more than once) I took that as a positive and quite a strong one too. It came up within the time frame as well. So to the person using it desperately wanting a healthy pregnancy, it was a false positive.

But thank you, I did go on to have my baby girl via IVF.

Kindly, stop dishing out false hope. The tests the poster is using are unreliable because they are generally shit tests. I tried them, sold under the name wondfo & preview and half the pack each time was throwing out false positives. It wasn’t an evap like the usual grey line or a test that had been sitting for too long either or had dye run from being close to another test. I was getting pink lines and then was testing again a few hours later and the tests were negative. I then started dipping multiple tests in the same sample when I’d get a positive and some were negative and some false positives. I wasn’t pregnant. The same thing happened with the one step tests but wondfo and one step are notorious for it. Just read the reviews on amazon and endless threads on here. Clearblue just leave those thin very blue lines, they are known for that. If it’s thin regardless of how blue, don’t read it as a positive.

Lina012 · 16/04/2026 11:00

This wasn’t even the typical thin clearblue line but it was still a false positive. I wasn’t pregnant.

Me saying ‘not out the realms of possibility’ is NOT dishing out false hope. Because it ISN'T out of the realms of possibility.
Also, I can’t see where OP mentioned Clearblue?

I didn’t say she mentioned clearblue that is why I said I have used the same tests as she’s posted… wondfo and preview. The clearblue was an example and follow on from what other posters have said
