How many months on average to conceive ?

Mrsquestions · 04/11/2025 11:15

I know this is a bit of string question as couples conceive month one or have a long journey but does anyone know the average amount of time it takes to conceive? I know the stats are before 12 months most will get pregnant

I over think everything and I’ve told myself I won’t allow myself to worry too early. My friend who works with nhs said it’s before 3 months but is this true?

In my experience people either get pregnant within a month or two, or really struggle and it takes a year or needs extra help. I don't know many people who for whom it took, say, six months. For me I got pregnant on my first cycle of trying twice, and second cycle of trying once.

Massively depends on your age

I was 39 and got pregnant first time, I know we were incredibly fortunate but I thought a positive story might be nice.

I’m about to go onto month 4 and told my friend I’m not overthinking it as nhs said it can take up to a year and she sort of said most will take up to 3 months. Which worried me a bit haha

For me, 5 pregnancies:
2.5 years
6 months
9 months
6 months
3 months

Bc87 · 04/11/2025 12:51

Do not listen to the poster saying it's either 1-2 months or people need help.

Plenty of people conceive after 6-7-8 etc (myself included).

Jellybunny56 · 04/11/2025 13:00

It totally depends on so many factors- age, health, lifestyle etc, there really isn’t a one size fits all and the “average” takes account of all of those different things.

I think the average stats now are that 30-40% conceive within 3 months, 60-70% within 6 months, 85-90% within a year, but obviously all of those people are not equal. A healthy couple in their 20’s with no health issues, healthy BMI, healthy lifestyle are more likely to be in the 30-40% in 3 months than a couple in their 40’s who are smokers, BMI obese with health issues for example, so you have to factor that in when looking at stats- they cover the whole spectrum.

You also need to remember though that even for two perfectly healthy adults with no fertility issues, having sex at the perfect time, you only have a 20-25% chance of success each cycle. It’s a bit of a lottery in that sense unfortunately.

I do find that you tend to hear most from people who either conceive really quickly or people who sadly have a long TTC journey and need help because those are the two most noteworthy extremes its “omg how quick” or “omg still trying need support”, there are lots of people in between though who just don’t really mention it.

I'm 34 and it's taken 5 months with 1 early loss on my first month trying

Moosey898 · 04/11/2025 13:21

@Jellybunny56 explains this perfectly. We only hear stories (or hear the most stories) about the extremes, and there's so many factors that affect it.

Periperi2025 · 04/11/2025 13:34

At 36 got pregnant after 3 months.

Tattletail · 04/11/2025 14:33

My first was unplanned so not a good example.

My second was 3 or 4 months of trying.

CaviarForTea · 04/11/2025 15:20

4 months aged 28
5 months aged 31 (ended in miscarriage sadly)
18 months aged 33

When trying for number 2 I was obsessed with TTC and read so many threads.
I do agree with a PP who said it seems many women either fall pregnant easily (within 3 months) or slog away for a lot longer.

Something like 50% of people get pregnant the 1st month, but after that it's really variable

danii95 · 04/11/2025 15:28

I’m turning 30 in December, came off the mini pill in March and I’m still not pregnant yet, but I’ve only had 3 cycles so far since they’ve been quite irregular — currently on my 4th cycle 😊

WinterBerry40 · 04/11/2025 15:32

Around 6 months ish both times . But that wasn't going all out with tracking and everything , more old school of having plenty of sex and let's see what happens .

VVM · 05/11/2025 22:59

I’m 32, I had 6 pregnancies which with all I fell on the first month and then when it came to my daughter who’s now 4 months it took 6 months. I actually believed to the point no one could convince me otherwise that I’d become infertile. Every month was complete torture and believing I couldn’t get pregnant anymore literally took over my life it was all I could think about and the what ifs about something I’d done had caused it x

Mollydoggerson · 05/11/2025 23:02

Aged 28 - 1st try
Aged 29 - 1st try

Expectinglittlebean2024 · 05/11/2025 23:22

Aged 36 - 3 months
Aged 37 - 1st month

Hallywally · 05/11/2025 23:23

Aged 25 (unplanned) - unprotected sex once. Aged 35 (planned)- roughly 2 weeks after fertile period had a positive test (so first first I suppose).

Lollystar15 · 06/11/2025 07:40

Child 1 - 8 months
Child 2 - 3 months but miscarried.
Child 3 - 10 months

Agree with this. If there are no issues, either explained or unexplained, it rarely takes longer than a couple of tries

BritishDesiGirl · 06/11/2025 07:49

I never thought l would believe the " advice" stop worrying but it definitely applied in my 2nd and currently 3rd pregnancy. I'm a worrier by nature so became completely obsessed with TTC.

First : cycle 1 age 34.6
Second : 5 months age 36.6
Third 4 months. Age : 4 months before my 39th birthday.

Lgn90 · 06/11/2025 09:12

For me, first aged 32 - second cycle chemical then third cycle pregnant with my now DS
Aged 34 (now 35) trying for second - fifth cycle (which was longer than I expected!). I have long cycles too so this was over 6-7 months. Currently 5 weeks pregnant so fingers crossed.
DH is 3.5 years younger than me too.

YaWeeFurryBastard · 06/11/2025 09:22

The replies will be skewed because people
IMO who conceive in their first month love to tell people like it’s some weird badge of honour.

IRL (from chatting at the mums groups I go to) most people are somewhere between 0-12 months, it was 5 for us (both 30s). Ignore the poster who said people conceive very quickly or struggle, statistically that’s not true you just seem to always hear of either extreme. I know it’s really hard and good luck.

GreenSox · 06/11/2025 09:24

First month of trying @ 27
Same @ 31
5th month at 40 (different partner)
