How many months on average to conceive ?

Mrsquestions · 04/11/2025 11:15

I know this is a bit of string question as couples conceive month one or have a long journey but does anyone know the average amount of time it takes to conceive? I know the stats are before 12 months most will get pregnant

I over think everything and I’ve told myself I won’t allow myself to worry too early. My friend who works with nhs said it’s before 3 months but is this true?

Agree with this. If there are no issues, either explained or unexplained, it rarely takes longer than a couple of tries

I don’t think this is true at all!

idri · 06/11/2025 09:33

I got pregnant first month with my first.

Took 5 months with 2nd (2 chemical pregnancies in between).

5 months with 3rd.

Sunshineclouds11 · 06/11/2025 09:35

1st / 3 year ended up doing IVF
2nd / 4 month

Mirroronthefloor · 06/11/2025 09:37

Baby one -4 months (age 15 (yes I was that batshit))
baby two - unplanned so I guess that means one month? (Age 23)

I also know 40 year olds who claim they got pregnant the first time trying. The fact you have pcos means this is a how long is a piece of string question though, I guess wait a year and then get everything checked

First pregnancy- 3 months
second pregnancy- 16 months (ended up being ectopic)
Third pregnancy- 12 months

In my experience people either get pregnant within a month or two, or really struggle and it takes a year or needs extra help. I don't know many people who for whom it took, say, six months. For me I got pregnant on my first cycle of trying twice, and second cycle of trying once.

This really, it is also very heritable. My DGM, DM, Dsis and I all had 2 (me), 3 (DM, Dsis) or 4 ( DGM) pregnancies within 1st 2 months of trying of unplanned ( had 1 unplanned pregnancy each). So in our family it really doesn't take long.

This is wrong, please stop spreading misinformation like this, it could really impact someone who’s TTC and cause unnecessary worry. Plenty of people who don’t get pregnant right away are able to fall pregnant within a year.

Great that your family were all able to conceive very quickly but 50% of the equation is the sperm so your post doesn’t even make sense.

Aged 31- 10 months (one chemical midway through)
Aged 35- 18 months!

We did have issues but didn't need assistance in the end just lifestyle changes. I know of quite a few people in a similar situation. But I do think if it's over 6 months (assuming you are timing right) and certainly over a year then there is something going on.

Marvelftw · 09/11/2025 08:21

This thread is full of such misinformation

interestedtoknowwhy · 09/11/2025 09:11

It took us 2/3 both times age 28 and 32

TY78910 · 09/11/2025 09:21

There are so many factors that affect this, please don’t stress. Our first we conceived really quickly, within a month of me coming off contraception. Second took 5 months but I do believe this was due to already having one and not having the time to DTD at anytime, only limited to evening once DC was in bed. Ovulation is this crazy thing you can’t pinpoint exactly and once it comes you have such a short timeframe to get it right. It’ll come - baby dust to you ✨

ohwoaw · 09/11/2025 09:24

All my pregnancies I got pregnant within 1 or 2 months even at 39. I’ve had other complications but no issues conceiving. I definitely think it depends on genetic compatibility. But many people get pregnant quicker with subsequent pregnancies.

VegQueen · 09/11/2025 09:29

It took me 5 months - I don’t think asking these questions is helpful as people will say that they got pregnancy first time every time etc which is just annoying if that hasn’t happened for you. You do hear more from either people who get pregnant immediately pr those with issues but that doesn’t mean that there are not plenty of people who are in the 3 to 12 month category but still perfectly capable of getting pregnant. There are so many factors that can affect it and it’s not necessarily a fertility issue e.g. you could just be not having sex at the right time. If you’ve been trying for a while and are worried then maybe look at lifestyle factors that affect fertility and get those right and make sure you’re having sex regularly and/or test when you’re ovulating so you can be confident you’ve got the timing right.

First month with first and currently TTC and on month 4 at the moment

Mrsquestions · 04/11/2025 12:22

I’m about to go onto month 4 and told my friend I’m not overthinking it as nhs said it can take up to a year and she sort of said most will take up to 3 months. Which worried me a bit haha

Wishing you the best x

I’m 30 with PCOS

When I conceived my first I was 28 with PCOS and it took 6 months!

deste · 09/11/2025 17:29

6 years then just over 7.

katand2kits · 09/11/2025 21:24

First pregnancy: unplanned (miscarriage)
Second pregnancy: 8 months (miscarriage)
Third time lucky: 3 months
Fourth pregnancy: First month off the pill.

All of these were in my 30s.

Curiousrobin · 09/11/2025 21:40

First - first cycle
Second - third cycle (I was breastfeeding the first 2 cycles of trying then stopped on the third🤔) this one I lost
Third - first cycle (loss)
Fourth - first cycle (loss)
Fifth - first cycle (🤞)

But I do wonder if I have hyperfertility because I fall easily but have had a few losses now! All whilst in my early to mid 30s.

YaWeeFurryBastard · 09/11/2025 22:29

Offensive misinformation. There are many factors that impact conception but there is no evidence that “genetic compatibility” is one of them. You are not more genetically compatible with your partner than someone with (for example) damaged fallopian tubes.

Hopingrae · 12/11/2025 13:18

I always conceived quickly but have had 3 losses, quickly doesn't always translate to baby sadly. I consider myself lucky though, I have a few friends around the same age who are experiencing primary or secondary infertility.

36 - 2 months (loss)
36 - 2 months (DC1)
39 - 2 months (loss)
39 - 2 months (loss)
39 - 2 months (DC2)
41 - 2 or 3 months (now 15 weeks pregnant with DC3)

cadburyegg · 12/11/2025 13:21

Age 26 - 6 months (successful pregnancy)
Age 29 - 1 month (miscarriage), then 1 month (successful pregnancy)

With my first, my cycles were all over the place after coming off the pill. In the year between coming off the pill and getting pregnant, I would go 3 months without a period. So if you have been on hormonal contraception it does make a difference, at least I believe it did for me.

mamagogo1 · 12/11/2025 13:24

How long is a piece of string? Even with reduced fertility you could get pregnant on month 1, you could take considerable time, but each month is afresh with the same chance, the odds aren’t better or worse because it’s month 6. I was on month 1 both times, not that unusual based on how many accidental pregnancies there are

GreenApple121 · 12/11/2025 18:57

Agree so much unhelpful information shared! It can totally happen a lot for people to take 5-6-8 months with no issues!
I fell pregnant first try at 30 (successful pregnancy) then tried at 40 for a second and took 5 months (ended in MMC)
ive had friends in their thirties take 5-6 months with no issues. Totally agree that you just hear of extremes more - not many people going to start conversation that they took 7 months to conceive as it’s not an ‘exciting’ piece of information.

Agree! My pregnancies have taken a wide range of months to conceive. As you say, you tend to hear the extremes and not the people who are in the average in the middle!
