I’m 43. I have regular 28 day cycles and have positive ovulation tests and EWCM every month . I’ve had ovulation confirmed by scan / bloods.

I had a fertility mot 16 months ago when started trying and they said everything looked good. That I had a good follicle count. My FSH has been checked a few times and was 5. Something on one occasion, 6.06 another and 6.09 I think the third time. My AMH is 28.9 pmol.

I had my dd when I was 38. We’ve been ttc though for 18 months now. Am I just too old or are my results ok ?

They’re ok for your age

I think I’m just worried that despite things apparently being fine could my eggs just be too old ? Or would some of the results have come back to show that ?

I have been taking supplements for the past few years as I started when ttc dd and just carried on with them so I’ve been on Ubiquinol and other vitamins plus inositol for about 6 years which I’m hoping might have helped with egg quality but I’m just feeling like maybe my age is just the reason nothing has happened yet

Has partner had a check up?

Yes he’s had a SA which was normal and he saw a urologist as well to check things were fine (eg no varicocele or anything like that). He’s also been on supplements.

They are good numbers for your age. But there really isn’t any way to know the quality of your eggs unfortunately. At 43 chances of a successful pregnancy are low but not impossible. All you can do is keep trying. It will either work or it won’t. (It didn’t for me. I’m also assume egg quality was the problem but I’ll never know for certain)

This is what I’m worried about as it’s the one thing I can’t check ☹️ I just feel like even ivf would be pointless at my age as if it’s egg quality then there’s nothing that will help

I tried IVF at 41 and 42.5 and it didn’t work. I made a good amount of embryos but they were all poor quality. One took but ended in miscarriage. Clinic tried to convince us to try again but we stopped. At 43 the odds of it working are minuscule compared to the cost. At 43 realistically it would be better using donor eggs. (Which obviously isn’t for everyone. We decided against it).

This is what I was thinking that whether i try naturally or try ivf if my egg quality is low then neither will work and ivf is so expensive. It’s just so hard as im starting to feel desperate and quite sad about it

I think success rates for 43 is about 5% or under. Unless you have a lot of funds personally I wouldn’t advise it. Obviously everyone is different though but I’m just being honest. I personally would just keep trying naturally and hoping for the best.

Meadowfinch · 22/07/2025 18:21

Eat well, lots of fruit & veg. Avoid alcohol. Take folic acid & regular gentle exercise. Get plenty of sleep & fresh air.

Doesn't sound like there's an absolute reason why not. I managed it at 44y4m.

Good luck

I don’t think we could afford it I’ve been having a look and the prices are just too much

That’s amazing ! Did it take a long time to conceive ? I hope I’m as lucky

@toooldforababy Err, at the time I wasn't actually trying. 😳

I was down to half an ovary and one tube by then. I'd long given up, and I wasn't married. It was a bit of shock.

A nice shock that turned into DS who is now 16 and six foot tall. He's lovely. 😊

I really hope it works for you xx

You have been trying for 16 months OPand you are 43. I think you have to be realistic about this OP. The chances of you naturally conceiving are very very slim

Panicpanicpanicpanik · 22/07/2025 19:40

Your amh is excellent, like the level of a woman 20 years younger.

amh Is half the story though, but there are things you can do for quality ubiquinol for instance.

it may just take longer? Do you have health insurance some insurance packages cover ivf

It’s been 18 months ☹️ I had the fertility mot after the first 2 cycles 16 months ago as I was worried because of my age then so I do feel concerned it just won’t happen

I’ve taken Ubiquinol for about 6 years as took it before ttc dd and carried on with it and my other supplements, I’m hoping it will have helped but I’m feeling anxious as egg quality is the thing I can’t check and I’m worried that’s the problem. If we had IVF it would have to come out of savings and it looks so expensive I don’t think we could really stretch to everything we would need to have done

Do you have health insurance?

could be worth taking it out? Mine is with Bupa and they cover ivf up to £15k

I can almost guarantee that no insurance company will pay for a 43 year olds IVF a month out two after she took the policy out.

I think you should move on op

toooldforababy · 22/07/2025 20:01

I might give it another 3-6 months then think about whether we give up or not but I think ivf would be a stretch.

Well all I can say is my policies docs cover ivf and it doesn’t say how long you’ve had to pay in before you can claim but equally I get mine through work so those questions weren’t asked and I’ve been able to claim from day dot.

at the very least it could be worth a phone call, you lose nothing by asking

ToKittyornottoKitty · 22/07/2025 20:02

I think it’s better to start mentally preparing yourself that it won’t happen, your chances of conceiving are low and also miscarriage risk is really high. It might just be taking that bit longer to conceive but there is no really way of knowing. Maybe another fertility check could help prepare you either way?
