I have a HyCosy booked in for this time next week and I'm absolutely shitting it. I've read countless threads about it on here, but I guess I'm just looking for some reassurance.

I'm seeing my GP tomorrow and I'm going to ask her for some anti anxiety meds and some painkillers, I'm doing lots of breathing etc but at the end of the day I'm scared it's going to hurt.

Could people please tell me their experiences? What type of pain is it? Was your partner allowed in the room with you? How long did it take? What did you feel, i.e nausea, dizziness, sweating etc?

I'm a person who likes to be prepared and know what to expect, but in this case I'm pretty clueless, scared, anxious and dreading the whole thing overall!

Forgot to mention, I have a 3cm fibroid, so no clue if that's going to make it more painful or not?

I had one recently and I was so nervous about it but it was actually fine! I took two panadol beforehand.

There was a sharp pain lasting a few seconds when the speculum was inserted (I get the same with smear tests).

Apart from that I felt completely fine during it. The doctor kept saying I might feel some cramping during it and if I really thought about it I could feel a slight twinge but that might just be the power of suggestion honestly.

I did have some cramping afterwards for about an hour, I think she said the uterus contracts to get the fluid out that the flush in? But I went to brunch after and looked around a few shops so nothing worse than normal light period cramps.

My wife also had one (lesbian couple starting IVF) and she was also completely fine. She had a small fibroid, but no pain during and no cramping afterwards!

Idabelle · 20/08/2024 12:35

Oh, forgot to say, it took about 13 mins or so from entering the room to leaving the room so very quick.

My wife came in with me and I went in with her but we both agreed after that was a bit pointless and would have been fine alone.

Lemonbalm8 · 20/08/2024 13:09

@MademoiselleFrenglish may I ask why you're going hycosy?
For me it was painful, I took co-codeine before. It was totally worth it for me, as I got pregnant the cycle after, after nearly year of trying after many MCs.

Imalittlewitch · 20/08/2024 14:44

It's like a bad period pain but it's over fairly quickly.

IveGotALovelyBunchOfCoconutss · 20/08/2024 14:54

I've had 2. Was terrified of the first one but honestly no issues. You are a lot more upright than with smears which I found odd and think there might have been some cramping after and small spotting but they took samples of things so that might have been why. Honestly wouldn't worry me if I had to have another, it was really useful for me medically

moosey89 · 20/08/2024 15:53

Mine was quite painful - because of the shape of my insides it took them a while to find my cervix so the speculum being moved around hurt quite a lot. When they put the dye in I got sharp cramps but only for 20 seconds or so, then just gentle cramping for the rest of the day. Took about 20mins all in all. I took 2 paracetamol and 2 ibuprofen about an hour beforehand. I didn't have my partner in there but I wouldn't have wanted them there, I am better at dealing with tests on my own to be honest! I had light spotting for a few days afterwards.

CrunchySnow · 20/08/2024 16:07

I assist our radiologist/sonologist with these each week. On the whole women tolerate them well and say that it wasn't as bad as they were expecting. The speculum is uncomfortable and the fluid going in can be like bad period pain but it only lasts a couple of minutes. Definitely take 2 ibuprofen before hand and practice relaxed breathing. We've had some women pop music on via headphones to try and tune out. Lots of women fall pregnant within 3 months of the procedure.

ChateauProvence · 20/08/2024 16:16

I didn’t have any Pain it was just a bit uncomfortable and then afterwards what felt like period cramps - try not to worry

whykeepchanging · 20/08/2024 17:29

I'm scheduled to have one after my next cycle.
Do they tell you the results in the appointment?

cosyleafcafe · 20/08/2024 17:33

It's like period cramps.

I had some pooling on one side (not quite a blockage but the liquid was struggling to get through), and it was a bit painful, but it really doesn't last long at all. It's OK.

Please try not to worry. Take some ibuprofen/ co-codamol (or both) beforehand, breathe, and try not to Google it too much.

ChateauProvence · 20/08/2024 17:48

@whykeepchanging i was given my results at the appointment

moosey89 · 20/08/2024 17:54

@whykeepchanging I didn't get my results at the appointment, I was told it was to be sent to fertility clinic doctor for when I have my appointment with them.

MademoiselleFrenglish · 20/08/2024 18:37

Thank you for the responses! It sounds like the pain is more of a dull ache kind of like period cramps? If so, I think I can handle that. Do you feel the catheter being inserted? Have never had one before!

@Lemonbalm8 My gynae found a 3cm fibroid during a scan and decided I needed a HyCosy. Have been TTC for 18 months now and she doesn't seem to want to look at anything else until I have this done.

I had one this month. It was over really quickly. As the dye goes in, it's like quick period pain. Over in ten seconds. I got the results straight away. I got pregnant that cycle. 5 weeks now.

MademoiselleFrenglish · 21/08/2024 10:55

I did a test this morning and am convinced I can see a line, but I usually am every month. I don't really trust the tests I got, so have my usual ones arriving tomorrow. I'm keeping absolutely everything crossed that I'm pregnant this month, before the HyCosy! What a fucking rollercoaster.

@Ella31 Congratulations! That's amazing that you got pregnant straight after, I've heard of those stories but trying not to get my hopes up too much.

MademoiselleFrenglish · 21/08/2024 10:59

Oh, I've also ordered one of those birthing combs. I remembered last night whilst trying to fall asleep that whenever I used to get piercings, I'd get someone to squeeze my hand as hard as possible right when the needle went in and it usually worked, hahah, so figured the birthing comb was a good bet, even if it ends up just being a placebo!

It definitely didn't do any harm. Who knows. I know you are frightened , but it will be over so quickly. Xxx

Thank you, I think I need to keep reminding myself of that and go and find my big girl pants, they're somewhere around here... Will hope that my fiancé can be in the room with me, if not I'll bring earphones and try to zone it all out. Might make nice lunch plans for afterwards to have something to look forward to. xx

No clue, I can always convince myself I see a line, but I feel like this morning's was more obvious than previous times. I've bought another test, so will test again tomorrow morning. Fingers crossed!!

Negative tests this morning, but period is now 2 days late. It's been late before but I usually have some symptoms at least, but this time around it's big fat zilch, so not sure what's going on. I've got easy@ home tests coming this afternoon, so I'll test again tomorrow morning.

I'm really sorry. These hormonal changes can happen, so many disappointing cycles. Will you do hycosy soon? It's definitely worth doing it to check the tubes. I got pregnant the cycle after it and just before I was about to start IVF.
