Thought it was time we had a new home, seeing as we've almost outgrown the old one. So in honour to Scorpio, Sybil, BB and toomuch (hope I didn't forget anyone ) here we are - in the company of pregnant (and cheerful) ladies

Hobnobs

toomuchtimeonline · 11/08/2008 09:52

Oh wow hobnobs - huge congrats!!! As they say a positive is a positive no matter how feint!!!!

toomuchtimeonline · 11/08/2008 09:54

MT - I'm drowning in nappy research at the moment.. I'm thinking of maybe just buying some small terrys for the first few weeks and a couple of wraps and then going from there once he's a bit bigger.. Unfortunately pregnancy hormones have me the most indecisive woman on the planet so can't quite decide whether this is the best option! The other option is to just throw money at the problem and allow the evil shopper in me to come and buy a selection of cute little ones to try [evil grin ]

PiggyPenguin · 11/08/2008 10:00

Oh Hobnobs that is fantastic news!!!!!!!!

Even though I haven't been able to post one-handed I have been checking in to find out how you were doing and I can't tell you have pleased I am for you. I do think that this thread title has been quite lucky for us!

hobnobs yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hobnobs · 11/08/2008 22:05

Thanks, everyone. Still don't quite believe it (and a bit nervous as have no symptoms whatsoever). I have a blood test at the clinic tomorrow to check my hormone levels, so hopefully I'll know a bit more when I get the results, and maybe then (assuming it's ok), DH will really allow himself to believe I'm pregant. At the moment, I think he's more nervous / scared about everything that could go round over the next couple of months than I am, poor thing .

Gilly Sorry that even with all those eggs, you didn't have any luck. Hopefully you'll be following in my footsteps very soon.

hobnobs · 11/08/2008 22:06

Sorry, could go wrong (not round!)

scorpio1 · 12/08/2008 11:13

pg symptoms often take until week 6 or 7 to start; then you'll be sorry happy! good luck x x

toomuchtimeonline · 12/08/2008 11:37

Yes hobnobs - try not to read too much into symptoms they come and go as they please.. I didn't feel anything at all until about 7 weeks..

toomuchtimeonline · 12/08/2008 11:38

p.s. I will post all of my knowledge on nappies as soon as I get a chance Gilly - although I suspect that I may just confuse you even more as I am completely confused myself

mistlethrush · 12/08/2008 15:09

Gilly - you didn't drop it!!

  • Nappies: well, this is what we found...

Essentially you can either go for a one-part or a two-part system. The one part means that the waterproof is attached to the absorbant bit - quick to get on and off, but the problem with them is that they take longer to dry than the 2 part systems - because the absorbant bit can't dry through the waterproof bit.

What we used was a two part system - ie an absorbant bit with a waterproof wrap over the top.

We got a large box of lots of different sorts of nappies that we hired. We did this so that we could try out lots of different types of nappies and find out which ones fitted ds best and that we could cope with.

We surprised ourselves by agreeing that pre-folds were actually surprisingly easy - these are squares with added absorbancy sections sewn in down the centre, and you fold them and just place them in the nappy as an absorbant rectangle (except you fan it out a bit) where required. We had a few terrys too, although we tended to do the same fold on them as the prefolds rather than trying to attach them to ds. We also got a few shaped nappies - a couple with pockets that you stuffed for extra absorbancy and some with an extra absorbancy pad sewn in but effectively loose (Totsbots style). We tended to use shaped when going out.

We got some fairly inexpensive (and actually not very good) wraps so that we had quite a few at this stage.

When ds 6mo and going to nursery, we purchased a reasonable number of TotsBots size 2s and some new, nicer wraps (Nature Babies) - at home we tended still to use prefolds with shaped when going out for extra security.

The great thing about having prefolds is that they dry more quickly - and they are a lot cheaper - so that you don't mind changing more often than you would have done if you were trying to eek out your shaped nappies (of which we had a limited supply) or disposables.

For night time we always used fleece wraps - we found that these were no good for ds during the day as they would quickly start to wick if there was pressure on them - fine at night though, and they are that bit more breathable. We got Totsbots Bamboozles for nighttime - these take longer than the normal totsbots to dry but were more absorbant for nighttime. We did end up boosting these with a prefold on top, so very large night-time nappies... But they don't need to walk then, so who cares!

If you want to know any more about washables, please ask - can only tell about my experience, but if it is helpful...

mistlethrush · 12/08/2008 15:10

Sorry, that should have been Gilly, you didn't drop in.

nomoremagnolia · 12/08/2008 21:17

toomuch Really sorry I have not posted your things yet - I will do so this week I promise

Thanks for reassurance about symptoms though it sounds like DH may have been right to be nervous about believing it yet .

Got my blood test results last night - my progsterone level is fine (104) but whilst the nurse who rang me with the results said it was a promising start, they want me back for another test on Thursday to check if my HCG levels have doubled. They're 75 which as far as I can see is very low though they do seem to vary wildly. (The nurse who took my blood said they expect to see it in the thousands though when I queried this in the evening, I was told that was for IVF patients). Can't do anything but wait and see until I get the results on Thursday evening.

mistlethrush · 13/08/2008 11:20

Hobnobs Crossing everything for you. Hope that you don't do too much panicing between now and then. You can't do anything to change things - but you also need to try to relax and do good things for you too - give yourself the best chance etc. XXXXX

How's the job going Gilly?

hobnobs · 14/08/2008 11:44

Thanks for the reassurance and kind words, MT and Gilly. Had the blood test and will get the results this evening -just need to be patient. As I said to the nurse this morning, the internet can be a dangerous thing (though I did find one site, www.betabase.info which shows details of the results of beta HCG levels in 27,000 pregnancies where a heartbeat has later been detected and whilst my result was very definitely at the lower end of the scale, it isn't impossible.) Will just have to wait and see if it's doubled....Loads to do today which is good .

Gilly Glad you've got a month off and hope everything settles down soon. It's quite time-consuming, all this stuff isn't it (am feeling very familiar with the Grays Inn Road now!) Our initial appointment at the Hammersmith was 8 weeks after our appointment at the local fertility clinic, though I think that was faster than I expected. I have a vague recollection that the registrar told us it was supposed to be within 13 weeks but might take longer. The letter notifying us of the appointment arrived just under 4 weeks before. It's good to know that your consultant is trying to minmise your waiting around for treatment.

Hello to everyone else. Sorry for all these me, me, postings

toomuchtimeonline · 14/08/2008 13:30

Hobnobs - got everything crossed for your results tonight! Try and stay positive

Gilly - sounds like the people you're dealing with are nice - I'm glad they are setting up the next phase in advance for you!

Nomore - no worries re posting - I'm hoping the little blighter is in there for another couple of months yet so no rush

Everyone else - big hello

PiggyPenguin · 14/08/2008 21:13

Sending hugs and positive vibes your way Hobnobs - good luck for your results.

hobnobs · 14/08/2008 22:47

I typed a message earlier this evening but maybe in my excitement / rush, didn't post it properly as just noticed it's not here. Results are ok - 179 which means they've more than doubled. They want me back for another blood test next Wednesday to check things are progressing ok but am quite relieved for the moment. (and relief!)
