Thyroid results -early miscarriage explanation??

Hi so I have had two chemical pregnancy’s in the past 9 months. I thought while we are still trying to undergo hormone tests which were normal and a thyroid test. My thyroid levels were normal and my Anti-TPO levels were normal.
However my Anti-Tg levels were high at 159 when they should’ve been 115 or less. I have tried to some research on just anti-tg and conceiving but I literally can’t find anything for just high anti-tg anything I can find includes both antibodies or all aspects of the thyroid. Is this something that can affect pregnancy on its own or has anyone else had this? I can’t find anything on how to lower it either.
Any help would be very much appreciated.

Im sorry for your losses. I would be surprised if it did. My thyroid antibodies regularly read off the scale and my endocrinologist said its not an issue unless tsh is high (it should ideally be less than 2.5 but definitely under 4)

This might be a garbled reply but I hope it helps. I have my DS who’s 6 from a previous relationship. He was after 4 early recurrent miscarriages. I have PCOS so the winning combination for me in the end to carry him to term was low dose aspirin (75mg) and metformin for my PCOS. I have lean PCOS and no symptoms other than long cycles if not on the metformin.

Fast forward 6 years and me and my new partner have been TTC for a year. I’m now 36 and back on the same medication as before (metformin and aspirin). We kept either not getting pregnant or having early chemicals. A thread on here that I read intently said to look at TSH levels especially if you’re over 30. I had mine tested and the GP said I was in ‘normal range’ despite them being 8.9. I was not happy with this, so armed with information and the fact I was going to get my brother to send me thyroxine from France (he lives there and can get it over the counter), the GP reluctantly agreed to prescribe me 25mg levothyroxine with a blood test in 6 weeks. We have now had a BFP and I’ve taken it upon myself to up my medication myself by 30% from my own research and I’ll be going armed with information to my GP to ask her to up my dose until 20 weeks. GPs in the UK are absolutely horrendous at knowing any of this so the only option I have is to do my own research and basically navigate this myself. I don’t know if you’re in the UK but if you are, the levels that are counted as ‘normal’ are so much higher than anywhere else in the world and GPs don’t know anything about it. It’s so frustrating.

@Jellybelly888 just jumping on this thread as I am trying to keep an eye on thyroid levels whilst TTC as the GPs are not really clear on it. How often have you been getting your TSH checked during pregnancy and have you found its gone up? I have Thyroid Antibodies but TSH from the last test 5 weeks ago was under 2.5 and I'm not long off doing a embryo transfer

Kofifi · 25/02/2024 09:42

@Jellybelly888 I'm appalled (but sadly not shocked) you weren't given treatment at 8.9. Thats anything but normal especially if your TTC!
I've also really had to advocate for myself to get treatment. Its been so disheartening and frustrating. I finally found an endocrinologist who listened to me and gave me a dose when my TSH was around 4. Im currently 10 weeks pregnant with my first and being tested every month... So far so good.

Pumpkinmoo · 25/02/2024 09:44

Thanks for your responses ladies and @Jellybelly888 Im so sorry to hear about your losses, it’s so hard!

Yes I am in the UK. My TSH levels were under 2.5 they were 2.28 so pretty good. Is it TSH that affects recurrent miscarriages or just the antibodies, I’m afraid with only one of the antibodies they won’t do anything as I guess my thyroid is “normal”. I’m going to check with my doctor as I had the test done privately as doctors didn’t want to get it done :/
As for baby aspirin GP said it couldn’t hurt so I’m hoping to take that this cycle! I’ve had a dodgy cycle last month and didn’t ovulate but I’ve been super stressed so that’s a possible reason.
Either way, if anyone knows anymore about the thyroid antibodies but normal thyroid id love to know I feel as though I’m a bit in the dark with all of it 😅.

I had an early miscarriage and then subsequent blood tests showed an Underactive thyroid.
My old family doctor told me at the time (12years ago) that the two were likely linked as the baby takes thyroxine from the mam until they can produce their own and if the mother doesn't have enough at the point then it can cause miscarriage
Had had a successful pregnancy before that miscarriage
Was put on thyroxine and caught months later and had my DD
I have no clue if true or the science but wanted to share my experience with you as I did go on to have a baby after being medicated

Pumpkinmoo · 25/02/2024 09:46

@Kofifi When you got pregnant were your antibodies still reading high? Is it only TSH that affects it? Sorry I’m not all clued up thyroid wise :)

OP posts:
Kofifi · 25/02/2024 11:18

@Pumpkinmoo - yes my thyroid antibodies are always high becsuse I have hashimotos (autoimmune thyroid disorder). Like tpo should be <60 and i read off the scale so they can only tell me its >1000. They're still high now but apparently they can go back to normal in pregnancy because your immune system gets suppressed.
You might want to get your tested again to see if its a random kind of high result or not. If there is some sort of immune response then its recommended to avoid dairy, gluten, caffiene, alcohol and other things that can cause inflammation. Your TSH is at the ideal level for TTC so there might be something else going on.

I sadly haven’t had my levels checked yet as I only recently found out and also I can’t even get a telephone appointment at my surgery. I’m thinking I might have to pay for a private endocrinologist because it’s just ridiculous to wait and potentially have another MC whilst waiting. From another thread on here that I read, ideal TSH levels would be under 2 for TTC so sounds like you’re heading in the right direction! Good luck 🤞

Congratulations!

The most outrageous thing about the 8.9 result was that it was given to me when I went back for my results of my blood ovulation tests. The so called fertility clinical lead nurse said that that level is well within the normal range and wouldn’t be the cause of infertility and said I should consider private IVF. Then just dismissed me. It was only when I did some research on here and found an amazing thread with a tonne of advice and real life examples of how TSH levels affect TTC that I realised that nurse was very very wrong! I pushed for a subsequent blood test via my GP and the test came back 5.4, which again was told was normal. I booked a GP appointment and basically told her what I wanted and why. Took in prints from NICE guidelines etc for TTC and said if she wouldn’t prescribe it, I would get them my own way and would be doing it blind without any bloody tests or monitoring. She was really hacked off but agreed. And here we are 6 weeks later!

Ive pcos
and had tsh over 3.5 before treatment.
But with the metformin and thyroxine managed 2 pg 0 miscarriages (luckily as icsi and they were the only embryos)

Ideally tsh should be 1..

Op could you have say pcos?

Irregular periods possibly overweight?

With dc1 i didnt have thyroxine as tsh was maybe 2/2.5 and that pg was ok.

It is rubbish imo we should be testing women more certainly by 30yo if they are planning ttc.
The gp said it couldnt be thyroid as at the time i was very thin.

Wednesdaysotherchild · 26/02/2024 11:22

You might want to look into reproductive immunology specialists like Shehata or Gorgy as there seems to be something autoimmune going on there for you. I’m under Prof Shehata after a load of early losses myself.

Check out the ‘pred threads’ on MN…

Pumpkinmoo · 26/02/2024 15:28

Thanks for all your replies ladies! I wondered PCOS but had perfectly normal TV ultrasounds and my bmi is within the healthy range I’m relatively thin and only 23.
I was having trouble understanding the antibodies as my TPO was normal only my TG that was an issue! I will have a look into the articles thanks so much for sending them :) if it is only TG is raised would you still think that would have an impact ?
all my hormone tests came back fine after second chemical. im just so confused 😅

Pumpkinmoo · 26/02/2024 19:20

@Lemonbell i have just read into the article you sent me, thank you so much! It seems that any antibodies can have an impact on miscarriage as you said. My worry is that as my thyroid levels are normal my GP will just dismiss it :( He’s lovely but I feel constantly fobbed off he won’t look into anything until 3 losses and was only okay with me starting baby aspirin after me asking like 10000 questions I think he is sick of me 😂. When looking into lowering anti bodies I can only find ways to lower TPO, have the steroids had any affect.on you? Or have you not been back to check yet? Honestly feel a bit hopeless with all of this, thank you again for helping me out.

Hey!

ive just miscarried again just come across your post Tommys found an issue with my TPO antibodies and was going to medicate but it was too late as I miscarried that day!

I have an appointment with prof qwenby in two weeks just wondering how you are getting on and if the steroids work or profess did any more testing on you!

not sure what to expect I’m a little deflated now I’ve seen your post about qwenby trial on antibodies failed! 😞

hope you are doing well and don’t mind me jumping on xx

Sunflower360 · 04/04/2024 13:01

@EmLenRon I also have Thyroid Antibodies. What medication was suggested for you? I'm currently on Prednisolone 10mg a day and about to go into my 2nd FET

EmLenRon · 04/04/2024 19:12

Hey, they emailed me to say come in for medication ASAP and it was bad timing for me as that was the day I miscarried so it was too late I have an appointment on the 12th with professor qwenby not sure what to expect as I went into them prior to my first appointment as I got pregnant and they did help me but it was too late.

im going to ask if I need this medication whilst TTC or is it only when I get a positive.

once I’ve had my appointment I will come back to you with what the suggestions are xx
