Hi 🙂, if you took asprin what was your experience with it and your pregnancy please? Any and all details welcome.

I am on a thread where we have all had miscarriages and have heard asprin can prevent this, but we would like more info from ladies who have tried this. Thank you very much in advance! xx

I have done a lot, and I mean a lot, of research on this. It seems to be something which works for some women who have had repeated pregnancy losses. Aspirin is an anti-inflammatory and a blood thinner so it is said to help thin the blood to help the flow to the placenta and it seems to aid women with inflammation. I have heard and read in medical papers that it can help with women who may, unknowingly or otherwise, have sticky blood or who are prone to clotting. There is also some evidence that it can reduce inflammation, anti-nuclear antibodies, etc.

However it does need to be born in mind that it can cause issues with the stomach and often appears to cause acid reflux which aside from anything else can raise the PH balance in the mouth and therefore has a negative effect on tooth enamal.
There are some people who are allergic to aspirin and indeed all medicines of the same type so it is important to keep an eye open for signs of any issues and read any patient leaflets carefully.

Is it worth trying? As a non medical person I would say yes, definitely but beware of any potential problems. Equally, it is obviously always sensible to speak to the doctor before taking any medication and doctors opinions will vary. Some will say absolutely not and others will think it is worth trying.

I think, if you have had a miscarriage or multiple miscarriages and you know of no other reason for them then it is worth trying. When we have to wait for three before the NHS will take a look, with all the mental and physical pain involved I would say we cant be blamed for trying.

I had two miscarriages in late 2020 and early 2021, I’d read a lot online about low dose aspirin helping those with recurrent miscarriages so took it from the day of ovulation for my 3rd pregnancy, thinking I had nothing to lose, I managed to carry my son full term.

I have just found out I’m pregnant again and have started taking the aspirin. I truly believe for me, aspirin stopped me from having another miscarriage.

LavenderSweetPea · 25/01/2024 19:47

I've been prescribed low dose aspirin in pregnancy, but nhs guidelines are not to take it before 12w pregnant.

Confusedddddddd · 25/01/2024 19:55

I took it when pregnant with my first as I ticked 3 boxes: age, bmi and a family history of blood clots (mum had many over the yrs). I was also meant to have heparin from 28 weeks, but my consultant agreed it was overkill. I was tested for the family history of blood clots in my teens and didn't have what my mum had.

The only side effect I had was a lot of nose bleeds which dr said was due to the aspirin. I did also have a lot of acid reflux but who doesn't in pregnancy? I just made sure I had plenty of Rennies in the cupboard.

I'm glad I didn't end up having the heparin as I hemorraged after labour.

Thanks for starting this thread @Ladyinpink1, it’s really helpful. I think I’m going to give it a go, as @Objectiontime has noted having had two losses with no explanation it might be worth a shot (but will stop if any adverse effects) x

Ladyinpink1 · 26/01/2024 15:49

@haylsttc the thread and I see @Wise0wl already found it 😊

Thank you very much for responding ladies, we appreciate the experiences!

And @Objectiontime That is good info, thank you for taking the time to type it. x

I’m really interested in this too, OP. I had a MMC in December and we’re TTC again now. I’ve read really positive things about aspirin after MCs/MMCs and I’m thinking about giving it a try, either 75mg or 150mg from getting a positive test (🤞🏼)

I also found out when I was in hospital for the MMC that my blood type is B+ (I actually thought the nurse was telling us to ‘be positive’ 😳🤦🏻‍♀️). Having had a read around online, it sounds like B+ is a ‘stickier’ blood type, which is also swaying me towards trying aspirin.

Huge luck with TTC x

shams05 · 26/01/2024 15:58

I was prescribed aspirin for first trimester but it was to increase bloodflow through the placenta because I'd had small babies previously.
I suffered horrendous stomach pain from it though so was advised to stop taking as I couldn't eat or drink anything from the pain.
All my children were small at birth, just around the 5lb mark.

Oxalis00 · 26/01/2024 16:08

I started a similar thread a couple of months ago on the pregnancy board. It’s one of those things you read about a lot and is so accessible (just over the counter) that it was a big question for me in my quest to make my next pregnancy successful. I spoke to a midwife at Tommy’s who signposted this video, which says it’s not being made part of routine recurrent miscarriage care and can be harmful if there’s not a blood clotting disorder: https://www.facebook.com/share/v/sHL2RTQqU1Drijnx/?mibextid=KsPBc6

That was enough to stop me trying it, even though I know of several friends (and loads on here) who have used it, and I’d even bought some! Currently 10 weeks, so time will tell…

It’s worth saying there’s a difference between those taking it to prevent pre-eclampsia (usually from 12 weeks) and those trying it because of previous unexplained MC. The ideal would be we all get tested for sticky blood, but sadly that doesn’t happen soon enough. Obviously if your doc recommends it for whatever reason, do it!

I took it after reoccurring MC and did have a successful pregnancy but I had an ANA marker in my blood work which it was prescribed for and so became part of maternity care and checks. I think it caused me to bleed throughout pregnancy which after so many loses caused huge anxiety.

I decided not to take it for the next pregnancy because I was still breastfeeding and there was a small risk of causing Reyes Syndrome. My next pregnancy without it was also successful and I didn't bleed throughout which made it so much easier.

Asprin isn't the same as a multivitamin and would be cautious about taking a drug in pregnancy without medical advice. Is it worth having a conversation with your doctor? Can they do any blood work for you?

Unexplained and recurrent miscarriages are heartbreaking and I hope you're able to find some answers ❤️

Catmum55566 · 26/01/2024 17:55

I had 3 early miscarriages in a row, around 5-6 weeks when I was in my early 30s. Had private investigations, no issues found. Did some research and took aspirin with my 4th pregnancy from 1dpo and now I have a two year old. No idea if that was what worked. I hope all works out for you.

Ladyinpink1 · 26/01/2024 18:10

@ThelastRolo20 This is it xx

Oh really @meepthebeep I am also b positive also so that's interesting, I will research this more x

Thank you @shams05 Do you mean you think the asprin caused the lower weight? x

Hi @Oxalis00 nice to see your name, glad all is well. Will check out the link, thank you x

@MooMoi thank you, good to hear you had successes. My last miscarriage was in August and I am still waiting for my tests from the epu (they have a huge backlog) but I might see if it's something the gp could do to find out about blood x

Are you thinking of trying it @Wise0wl x

I have a blood clotting disorder and was advised to take baby aspirin, so I did. I had to stop taking it once I got closer to full term, then self inject with heparin post birth. All fine and dandy for me.

Aria2023 · 26/01/2024 18:38

I had two miscarriages and the. Took low dose aspirin for the third pregnancy and it was successful. I took it again for my 4th pregnancy but that ended in miscarriage again. Took it for my fifth pregnancy and that pregnancy was successful. So 2 out of the 3 pregnancies I took it for were successful. Still hard to know if the aspirin made the difference though. It didn't do any harm though, so that's why I chose to take it.

shams05 · 26/01/2024 18:41

I'm sorry no, the aspirin was supposed to combat the low birth weights in my previous two pregnancies by improving the blood flow in my placenta for my third pregnancy. I was unable to take it though because of the pain it caused.

Amyjones86 · 26/01/2024 22:03

I had 5 MCs in 2022. I was prescribed 150mg aspirin alongside high dose vitamin D and 800mg progesterone daily by recurrent miscarriage clinic consultant. I now have son number 2 who is 13 weeks old. I wish you all the best

Wise0wl · 26/01/2024 22:44

@Ladyinpink1 I’m tempted - the positive stories are just so compelling after losses. How about you? X

Objectiontime · 28/01/2024 09:39

I am going to have to give it a go next time round I think. Not keen but I will try it and see.

HeyItsMeImTheProblem · 28/01/2024 09:42

Hi there. I had 3 MC, all early on in pregnancy. I finally got my DD after IVF supported by progesterone & fragmin injections for the first 12 weeks (which I think are standard IVF protocol) after 12 weeks I was on a low dose of aspirin right up until my DD was born.

If I was to TTC again I'd take it daily from ovulation until AF / positive pregnancy test (and after)

Sez281 · 28/01/2024 13:52

Hi ladies I might jump on here if that's ok. I'm 10/11dpo and have faint lines on different tests. I'm over a year ttc with precious MMC and CP, was due to start ivf process next cycle but now I've got a possible BFP 🥹 My consultant had given me a prescription to keep on hold and to take 75mg aspirin from BFP. I'm assuming it's due to my age/previous losses so I've just picked up the prescription.

I was feeling a bit apprehensive about it as I've heard that it should only be taken under certain circumstances but after reading some stories here I'm feeling a little better about it and hopefully it helps this stick 🙏

Also going to tag @xxcxdonxx from another thread I'm on as I think you might be interested in it xx

Sez281 · 28/01/2024 15:04

@Supertrooper101 tagging you here too as I know you have an interest in it x

xxcxdonxx · 28/01/2024 17:58

Thanks for the tag @Sez281 and really interesting to hear everyone’s experience.

I’ve been TTC #3 for just over a year now with two chemicals and two early miscarriages. My first two were straightforward pregnancies so it’s all been a bit confusing.
I was tested for sticky blood recently, I need to get the results this week but from what I know so far 2 out of 3 results were fine but the 3rd being high.

Tempted to give a low dose aspirin a shot just to see if it makes any difference for the next cycle or at least see what the consultant can advise
xx

ThelastRolo20 · 29/01/2024 13:12

Thanks everyone for your stories - it's really fascinating. I'm tempted to try it but I also remembered that I happened to exercise more in my first trimester with my first pregnancy (running/ gym etc) so I wonder if that increased blood flow enough. My two MC may be completely none related but I do know that when I give blood they comment that it doesn't easily come out, and I need to constantly squeeze something.

How easy is it to get tested for sticky blood? I might try speaking to the GP!

Oxalis00 · 29/01/2024 13:26

It’s all a bit of a guessing game isn’t it, and in the absence of testing probably comes down to a decision on whether you’d rather worry about something you did do or something you didn’t if anything goes wrong! Or at least, that’s my pessimist’s feeling about it 🤦🏻‍♀️

I think anti-phospholipid syndrome is one of the key things they test at recurrent miscarriage clinics, and of course you can do it privately too. My GP wasn’t able to offer it but I’d be interested to hear if others’ do. My understanding though is that the test has to be repeated over quite a long period, and can’t be done accurately if you’ve recently been pregnant (presumably including MC).

I’m not sure if your responsiveness to blood tests would be an indicator, but any family history of clots might be. I’ve wondered whether previous gynae bleeding might suggest anything one way or another too? I bled for ages (9 weeks) after my full-term pregnancy, and 2.5 months (albeit with RPOC) after my MC, so I wonder if I might in fact have blood that’s a bit too runny…?! Just speculating though.

seven201 · 29/01/2024 14:28

I was told to take it at 75dose by my ivf clinic. Later I moved to a different clinic for recurrent mc and infertility treatment and was on 150dose, along with lots of other drugs and do now have a baby. I do have pre-existing high bp, past pre-eclampsia and over 40 though! I didn't get pre-eclampsia this time round and I do think that might be because of the higher 150 dose. I was on 75 dose with dc1 but that was 7 1/2 years ago.
