CoQ 10 is it worth it?!

MrsBP15 · 03/01/2024 16:43

Has anyone taken CoQ10 and seen success? It’s not cheap so just wanted to make sure before I buy any! Info on me below:

• 37, TTC #1 on 9th cycle
• AMH test came back v good as well as Vit D
• Been taking Proceive for about three months as has husband.
•Husband going for sperm analysis next week.
•Regular cycles (26 days), positive ovulation tests.
• Heavy and painful periods due to diagnosis of Adenomyosis and poss Endometriosis.

Realise it will be different for everyone but positive (Or not) stories of CoQ10 would be great to hear!

I’m taking it, 600mg one. My fertility doctor recommended it for older ladies as it can improve the egg quality. I’ve only been trying for 1 month so can’t comment really but it can’t don’t any harm!

thejollytrolleydolly · 03/01/2024 16:55

Following as I have just started taking it myself as I've been told I have poor egg quality so hoping for a boost! Currently on 300mg per day as well as pregnacare conceive vitamins x

I took 200mg of ubiquinol (even more expensive than CoQ 10!) more-or-less regularly from January 2021 to March 2023 and conceived in May last year, aged 44. I'm now 32 weeks pregnant. I am sure that the ubiquinol played a role. It cost me around 500 pounds in total.

user1469661475 · 03/01/2024 17:20

I should add that this is my fifth pregnancy and I already have two children.

ChildOfTheMoon · 03/01/2024 18:54

Honestly, my opinion is to save your money. I spent an absolute fortune on q10. Its not cheap and it did not improve quality in the slightest.
We did ivf so obviously we had an embryologist checking the quality.
Very fortune that our utterly rubbish quality 3cc that should have been discarded implanted

merryandbrightdelight · 03/01/2024 18:58

We were an ivf successful pregnancy and I did take it amongst other things - can't say if it was down to that or not, but I thought it didn't harm to take it

ToMissAdventure · 03/01/2024 19:02

I also took it (from Together Health) after my first failed ivf round. Second round was successful but can’t say what influence it had. From what I read it helps if older. There is a podcast episode on Bigfatnegative which looks at coq10 and Prof Tim discusses the science behind it. Professor Tim has just launched an Instagram channel so you could also post a question to him

MoonstoneGoddess · 03/01/2024 19:27

There's absolutely no proven published scientific data to show q10 improves egg quality . If there's was then q10 would be a quick fix solution . Older women such as myself wouldn't require such invasive treatment
Having been through rounds of ivf. My one successful round was actually the round I wasn't pumping my body with supplements and only took folic and d and iron

Margauxdes · 03/01/2024 19:32

I did, got pregnant with twins shortly after starting it, but probably just a coincidence, who knows. I was 38 and had been TTC for 5 cycles, conceived on 6th. I was also taking vitamin D, C, evening primrose and high strength vitamin b complex

MrsBP15 · 03/01/2024 19:49

Thanks so much for all the replies, I really appreciate you taking the time.

i should point out that my AMH came back as 40 which by all accounts is very good for my age. So perhaps CoQ10 isn’t necessary for me right now. Perhaps for my husband though? He’s got his sperm analysis booked next week so I might hold off until we get the results from that.

Been taking Proceive max tablets for around 3 months now and so far no luck, not even chemicals though I wouldn’t know as I don’t test. Could be husband’s sperm or my tubes could be blocked as this can be a side effect of adenomyosis. Only time will tell I suppose!

My understanding is that AMH is more about the numbers of eggs than the quality.

I used ubiquinol, as did DH I think, for IVF. Our fertilisation was excellent (90%) and 6/9 embryos made it to blasts.

Obviously I have nothing to compare it to but I have no regrets sucking up the expense of supplements as we have a toddler now.

Olika · 03/01/2024 20:14

We were trying for 2.5 years and when I started taking Ubiquinol and Proceive I fell pregnant 1.5 months later.

MrsBP15 · 03/01/2024 21:09

Ok that’s interesting. Perhaps I’ve got plenty of eggs but the quality isn’t the best. Maybe I’ll give Ubiquinol a go as I’ve already got a good stash of Proceive for both me and my husband.

Thanks @Olika is there a difference between CoQ10 and Ubiquinol do you know?

HappyNewYear2024 · 04/01/2024 06:09

I went through two egg collections via IVF, whilst we got a lot of eggs and fertilised embryos, the first time only one embryo was normal when genetically tested, likely as a result of poor egg or sperm quality.

Before the next cycle my husband and I started taking supplements including CoQ10 and the next round we got 6 genetically normal embryos, even the IVF clinic asked me what I did different because it was such a vast improvement. So I truly believe the CoQ10 helped. Good luck!

HappyNewYear2024 · 04/01/2024 06:12

Ubiquinol is the easiest form of CoQ10 to absorb so I would opt for that but will be more expensive than the alternative called ubiquinone

Olika · 04/01/2024 08:38

@MrsBP15
Ubiquinol is active antioxidant form of coq-10 and the body absorbs it, whereas with coq-10 the body has to convert it to Ubiquinol and as we age our bodies are less and less able to do that. When it's about fertility and helping our bodies to conceive I would definitely go for Ubiquinol even with high prise.

CoQ 10 is it worth it?!

Thank you all for your thoughts and recommendations. Going to see how sperm analysis goes and then take it from there. Sending baby dust to all ✨

Hey, can I just ask. So once you stopped taking them in March you fell pregnant in May 2023? @user1469661475

Edited

Yes, exactly. I stopped taking all the supplements, including ubiquinol, “gave up” TTC in the sense of tracking ovulation etc. and fell pregnant. I have no idea whether any of it played a role in having a successful pregnancy, of course. I wish you all the very best in your journey!

TTCRainbowBubs · 11/08/2024 19:56

Thank you @user1469661475 ! I’ve heard that a few times people stopping supplements and then falling the next cycle. I don’t understand if these supplements are meant to be supporting fertility 😅 thank you for responding! X

SeaPebble · 16/10/2024 08:54

On the first IVF cycle I had 7 eggs and one blast that didn't work. Then I took CoQ10 200mg for 2 months and on my second IVF I had 9 eggs 3 blasts, one was MMC and 2 frozen, which is an improvement from the first cycle. Hope I will have more luck with the frozen ones.
