Anovulatory Cycle

I wondered if anyone here knew about this?

"By definition, an anovulatory cycle is a menstrual cycle in which ovulation fails to occur. This means that you do bleed but do not release an egg or ovulate. Hence the term anovulation. This is normally supposed to happen during menopause. If it does happen before then anovulation translates into difficulty in conception or infertility. Anovulatory cycles tend to occur occasionally throughout the childbearing years, but are most common during adolescence and in the years before menopause ("perimenopause"). "

I am not pre-menopausal but I wondered if I have been ovulating every month or not. I have a short cycle and have never missed a period, so should I just assume that I am ovulating if I get my period regularly and that perhaps I am just testing at the wrong time? Have been testing since CD10 and am now approaching CD16 with no sign of ovulation.

oh - also says here that "Most often, women who do not ovulate also do not menstruate"

This is easy for me to say but I wouldn't worry too much. I have read that anovulatory cycles are still relatively common post adolescence and just pre manopausal so if you find you have had one it might not be anything to worry about.

How are you trying to detect ovulation? Sound slike you are using LH test sticks - it is quite easy to miss with those IMO. Have you tried temp charting (even if just for a few months - if neccessary) as that should give you a better idea of what is going on?

My cycle souds similar to yours - I was testing at totally the wrong time most months - OV seemed to occur just whenever it fancied but I didn't relise this until I combined temping and LH sticks.

Hello Beaniesteve,
Do you temp/monitor your Basal Body Temperature? If you're worried about anovulatory cycles, this is a great way to discover whether or not your ovulating in any given cycle. OPKs can tell you if you're close to ovulating, but only your temps can tell you if you've actually released an egg.
I've been temping for two cycles now on the temp thread and it's really helped me understand my cycle better (was BD'ing around the wrong days before).
You could go to www.fertilityfriend.com if you'd like more information - or feel free to ask questions/join the temp thread.
Hope this helps & good luck!!

Beaniesteve - look it's really hard to tell if you are ovulating. I have PCOS - I had tons of blood tests and guess what they always showed I didn't ovulate, then I had OPK tests and ditto, no ovulation. Yet when they gave me a lap and dye - BINGO there was a corpus luteum (egg sac). Plus I got pregnant four times. Two miscarriages, one DD and one DS on the way.

The problem is that the levels measured by OPKs and the blood tests for LH, FSH etc. are actually quite prescriptive, you need to score a fairly high level to be counted as ovulating. However many women do ovulate at a lower level of FSH or LH.

Temping never worked for me either. Sex every two days though, that worked.

Hiya

I have been using OV sticks though the one I used last month was a clearblue and the ones I have now are cheapie ebay ones. My doctor says the fact I ovulated last month is a good sign and I should only really be woried if my cycles are really long.

I did start charting but kept forgetting to take my temperature as soon as I woke so just gave up.

Perhaps I will try again next month?

This month my period was about 10 days long so I didn't bother to start testing with the sticks until it finished. I wonder if it's possible that I ovulated before day 10!?

Oh quite possibly, I conceived DD on day nine of 31

Sometimes I think conception is so random you can do no more than bonk like bunnies and forget about the consequences.

wanttohidemyname · 10/03/2008 22:19

Glad I've seen this here. I have temped this month and it shows no ovulation- in fact temps are higher (!) before my positive OPK's which I got on day 12 and 13. am now on CD 18 and temps have stayed steady at about 36.5 (were 36.6 before +opk's). Can anyone interpret this cos I'm stumped!!!

sorry to barge in xxx

BigBadMouse · 10/03/2008 22:27

are all your temps accurate do you think - all taken under same circumstances, at the same time of day and after same amount of unbroken sleep etc?

wanttohidemyname · 10/03/2008 22:31

all accurate- even at weekends I have been waking at half 6 to take temp then nodding back off. I really dont get it. when i look back at old charts I did last year they are very clearly showing ov- a very clear shift. my cycle is only 26 days so day 18 and no shift is bit odd really.

wanttohidemyname · 10/03/2008 22:32

can you get positive OPK's and no temp rise?? the OPK's were dark positives as well- not faint.

wanttohidemyname · 10/03/2008 22:35

www.fertilityfriend.com/ttc/

hope this posts- this is my chart!!

BigBadMouse · 10/03/2008 22:38

doesn't link to your chart - just login page.

BigBadMouse · 10/03/2008 22:41

Is your thermometer old? Can you replace the batteries? Is it taking a long time to take the temps?

Sorry for barrage of Qs

wanttohidemyname · 10/03/2008 22:41

oh erm...........

www.fertilityfriend.com/ttc/index.php

now?

wanttohidemyname · 10/03/2008 22:43

thermometer isnt that old. it takes seconds to take the temps and have had no probs with it. hardly been used really- have only temped for 3 cycles in all.

thanks for trying to help me- dont worry bout the qs!!

BigBadMouse · 10/03/2008 22:52

to link to the chart I think you have to go to 'home page setup' under 'sharing' - that gives you an url which you copy and paste as your link.

like this hopefully

Not sure I'll be much help even if I see it -FF seems to be pretty good.

BigBadMouse · 10/03/2008 22:54

yep, that worked so you have to go to 'share', 'homepage set up' and use the link it makes for you

wanttohidemyname · 10/03/2008 22:54

wanttohidemyname · 10/03/2008 22:56

its the cycle 22/02/08

BigBadMouse · 10/03/2008 22:57

got it - having a nose now

BigBadMouse · 10/03/2008 23:07

Hmmmm....you weren't a bit under the weather at end of feb by any chance? That would help a lot wouldn't it!

BigBadMouse · 10/03/2008 23:08

sorry for the wait - strong winds down here upsetting my connection.

wanttohidemyname · 10/03/2008 23:10

no not at all. its def anov isnt it? doesnt explain the + opks though.

BigBadMouse · 10/03/2008 23:13

no, I really don't think it is tbh - not at all. Something is amiss. I had this with my cycle that I linked to earlier, I got some advice from someone who had been charting for 4 yrs (poor sod), when I removed two temp readings she suggested were a bit rogue I got my crosshairs. As you can see - she was right, def not anov that month - spent ages on FF trying to work out what was wrong though, charts can be a bugger to read - have you done the charting course or looked at the examples of charts - mind boggling!

BigBadMouse · 10/03/2008 23:14

What OP tests are you using btw?
