Did you fall pregnant after a HyCosy?

I’m clinging onto all sorts here, so bear with me!

36, 2.5 years in to TTC#1 and diagnosed with unexplained infertility. We have had our one and only round of NHS IVF, with one unsuccessful fresh embryo transfer and one frozen embryo in the freezer.

As part of the fertility investigations, we had everything but a HyCosy because whatever the result, I still wasn’t falling pregnant so would have need IVF regardless, so went down that route instead.

It’s been at the back of my mind ever since, so after our failed fresh transfer in March this year, we are now deciding what to do next. Using the frozen embryo feels too soon for some reason, so I decided to book in for a HyCosy for 3 weeks times.

what pushed me more down this route, rather than using the frozen embryo, is the stories I’ve read of women becoming pregnant soon after a HyCosy because it effectively ‘flushes’ the tubes out and the sperm and egg are able to get to where they need.

Does anyone have any real life experience with this?

we are pushing out the frozen embryo transfer to later this year/early next year and I want to cling onto some hope of still falling pregnant naturally.

coming up to 37, I know if the HyCosy doesn’t work/shows nothing, and the frozen embryo transfer fails, we will have to do a self funded IVF round, and realise I need to be as young as I can for that.

sorry for the long winded post!!

Im 37 and I fell pregnant the cycle after my dye test last year ( very early loss) so it definitely was a miracle for us as TTC since our early 20s with zero pregnancies.
I've really struggled since to get pregnant again :( and were starting ivf shortly .
I've met lots of women on here who fell pregnant after it aswell
.It definitely temporarily increases your chances

Weefreetiffany · 15/08/2023 16:29

I’ve heard it does. We were ttc number 2 for nearly three years. I’m the same age as you. I had all the investigations and they found fluid around my right ovary. I was seriously considering a hycosy for the reasons you’ve mentioned but fell pregnant the month before I’d planned to have it. The egg came from the left ovary this time, interestingly. Having had several miscarriages I’m hoping this one will carry to term. My doctor wasn’t keen on the hycosy (thought it was invasive and unnecessary) and prescribed rest and relaxation, the embryo implanted while we were on holiday. Make of that what you will!

whomoon · 15/08/2023 17:27

Thanks for sharing your stories. It’s reassuring to hear of similar positions as me. Sometimes it can feel so lonely can’t it.

@MoonlightDreamer - good luck with the IVF. We had it the start of this year and I found it to be fine overall. Overwhelming at first, but taking it day by day really helped with the anxiety levels. Take time for yourself as much as you can, rest definitely helped me.
I have read the same stories but sometimes it’s hard to really think it’s true when you put yourself in the same position. I’m hoping this could help us, I’ve not fallen pregnant in all this time so the fact it may increase chances is promising.

@Weefreetiffany Wishing you a healthy pregnancy, incredible news you caught before the HyCosy. Interesting that your doctor thought it would be invasive - isn’t everything during fertility tests!? It’s the only thing I’ve not had checked so it could very well be the thing that’s stopping me fall pregnant. Knowing for definite will help I think.
we are actually going on holiday the week after the HyCosy so maybe we could fall pregnant like you did!

I had one as a last step before starting ivf and we fell pregnant a week after I had it. They told me then and there my tubes didn't seem blocked and they couldn't see anything to worry about but it definitely did something🙏🏼good luck with yours x

Thank you for sharing your positive story! That has given me hope.

I’ve been back and forth whether to do the HyCosy or spend the money for the frozen embryo transfer, so I feel like I’m definitely going down the right path.

Yes I would definitely explore the hycosy. Plus would be alot cheaper I imagine. Sending you lots of luck🤞🏼x

@whomoon I fell pregnant the month after my hycosy, after never having had a positive test in 2yrs ttc. I did a bit of reading about it improving odds, my very non medical understanding is that it may be because blood flow to the area is increased as the body 'recovers' from the procedure, if that makes sense. And I didn't have any issues/blockages. The pregnancy sadly ended for me early on, but that was just bad luck (and I am now 6wks pregnant via IVF). I would definitely think it's worthwhile to go for the hycosy- wishing you lots of luck with it.

whomoon · 15/08/2023 19:41

Thank you @Walker12 for sharing your experience!
I am sorry it did not end well for you, but congratulations on your pregnancy- it must feel incredible after going through IVF to get there.

All my tests, and, what it feels, endless scans, has shown no issues, so in my mind I’m thinking there won’t be any blockages or issues during the HyCosy. But saying that, even if it does show something, I would be relieved to know and be able to make a plan after that.

The thought it could help with conceiving after having no conceptions during 2.5 years really does make me feel positive about it.

Thanks @whomoon, early days still but feeling cautiously hopeful.
I also have unexplained infertility which has been hard, as whilst it's a positive in lots of ways it's also been incredibly frustrating that there isn't a specific answer or reason. So I understand the sense of possible relief if there is an issue that might be resolvable. Really hope it does the trick for you!

Blackberriesbob · 16/08/2023 00:34

Hi op. I had a hycosy and I didn't get pregnant immediately afterwards but I definitely think it was a good thing to do fertility-wise. I wish you the best of luck.

Alloveragain3 · 16/08/2023 01:19

My consultant said it could help "get the goop" out of the tubes.

I fell pregnant on the 2nd cycle after mine, though I had also started clomid so I can't know which helped.

It won't do any harm anyway so in your shoes I'd go for it!

whomoon · 08/09/2023 14:17

Just to update this thread, I had a HyCosy today. Felt uncomfortable, and was like very strong period pains at times, but consultant was really reassuring and talked through each step. He had a really good look with the wand and also scan on my tummy, and the dye went where it needed to go, no blockages or issues. Everything looked good!

So that’s hopeful. I’m still uncomfortable and spotting from the procedure, so once I’m up to it, I’m looking forward to giving this cycle a go and hoping it could be a lucky few months!

It comes with its risks but can help some ladies.
But as with any radiation it can cause mutations to radiosensitive organs the Ovaries, so some may get pregnant but have a chemical / miscarriage due to mutations caused by the radiation. It is a Benefits outweigh the risks kinda situation and very hard to decide.

MumOfOneAwesomeHuman · 08/09/2023 14:42

After 2 years TTC I had a hycosy and got pregnant that cycle. As my tubes weren't great it was ectopic sadly but it cleared them enough for the sperm to get up if not got the embryo to get down! So it does happen. Although mine didn't have a happy ending I did then find out the issue was my tubes, (I had the really bad one removed as my gynae felt it was hampering implantation by sending fluid into my womb every month - sorry forgotten what this is called now) and our subsequent ivf worked first time.

I would say it's definitely worth a shot.

Sleepwhatsthazzz · 08/09/2023 14:54

Yes i fell pregnant next cycle after nearly 2 years of no positive tests. Tubes were all OK as well. Then next pregnancy took 2 cycles. I was early 30s for both. Best of luck

Walker12 · 08/09/2023 20:44

Glad it went OK @whomoon! Fingers crossed for your next cycle.
@MixedCouple I think you might be thinking of something else, perhaps a HSG, there is no radiation involved with a hycosy.

MrsFairweather · 08/09/2023 21:43

Three years TTC - had a lap and dye and fell pregnant the following month. I hope it works out for you OP.

XStardustX · 09/09/2023 12:47

@MumOfOneAwesomeHuman do you mind me asking more about your experience? You said you found out the issue was your tubes, after your dye. how was this diagnosed?
I had suspected fluid on ultrasound. I then had dye and they said my tubes were clear and I did get pregnant but had a chemical. I've had a scan since and they said they can't see fluid on scan but I'm wondering could it still be there despite the clear dye test as we've just not been able to get pregnant since . Can't help but feel it's there but lower undetected amount

Of course, no problem. My tubes seemed clear on the hycosy, the dye went all the way through them. But I immediately got pregnant that cycle and it was ectopic (right tube). When they operated my tubes had multiple adhesions and although the dye went through (presumably clearing enough gunk for sperm to make it through) it wasn’t clear enough for the embryo to come down. So I don’t think hycosy is always clear cut. My nhs gynae was amazing & at my insistence preserved my right tube just removing the pregnancy but age showed me pics of both tubes and left was very bad. She said each month it would fill with fluid and spurt that back into womb, stopping any pregnancy implanting. She suggested removing it which she did a few months later as she said it could affect ivf. This was more than 16 years ago so there may be better tech to see these things now in scans but back then hycosy was all that was on offer and it didn’t show my problem. The photos inside did. I think a lap & dye is better because although more intrusive, it means they can see everything. Hope that answers your question but feel free to ask more and I’ll try and recall.

Yes had hycosy and then the same
month got pregnant on metformin and clomid (PCOS). Good luck!

Confusedddddddd · 09/09/2023 15:39

@MumOfOneAwesomeHuman that's interesting thank for sharing this. I had an ectopic a few months ago that ruptured. I was told that despite the remaining tube looking very healthy she had to remove some endo from the outside of it. She offered Hycosy to check for any blockages. But at the time said no as if just spent the last 3 weeks getting poked and prodded still resulting in emergency surgery - been debating whether to go back and ask for it.

Hibernatalie · 09/09/2023 17:30

Yes!! I was trying for a year and a half with no luck. Had a hycosy and got my period the next day. Last period I had for 9 months! Then I've been pregnant twice since without trying. Good luck!

Hibernatalie · 09/09/2023 17:31

Oh by the way, they said mine was all fine and normal too but they can't tell if your tube/tubes are collapsed because the dye pushes them back open. I'm sure that was the case with me - the dye open it all up.

what day of your cycle did you have your HyCosy, if you remember? They said it had to be done between days 8-10 and I had mine on day 9.
the invasive nature of it meant I bled too straight afterwards, more gunky than actual blood, and had brown spotting for a couple of days now which has now stopped.
Great to hear another good news story!

@whomoon
It was late in my cycle - it was supposed to be the beginning but didn't end up happening that way so I just had to have a negative pregnancy test before they'd do it.
