Do ovulation tests even work?

I've been ovulation testing for the last ten days, and so far haven't seen hide nor hare of a second line. I must have ovulated by now, but still nothing showing up. What are people's experiences of these tests? Should I just give up?

I found them really good and used them v.effectivly to get pregnant. From day what - to day what did you test ???

Katie3677 · 18/02/2008 16:42

well, as my last two pregnancies (both MC) were a bit of a shock I decided that I must ovulate early so have been testing since 4 days after my period finished. Even if I was a late ovulater, it should have happened by now. Very confused.

So what day would that make you now ?

Katie3677 · 18/02/2008 16:56

Oh jeez, I find it all very confusing, but I think 16 days past first day of last period. Does that make sense?

That sounds about right. But day 16 isn't that late and your ovulation date can change. I ovulated on day 17 when I got pregnant the first time. Keep going for a few more days and see what happens. If nothing then just try again next month and see what you get. Sorry to hear about your MC's, that must compund the stress something rotten. Good luck and keep going for a few more days !!!

Thanks for the advice. I'll keep going and see what happens. I just wondered how reliable the tests were really. Knowing my luck I've probably got a dodgy batch!

i found the sticks impossible to interpret (and i have peed on ALOT of sticks) so gave in a bought a clearblue monitor on ebay. much better but obviously quite expensive.

Teuch · 18/02/2008 18:03

take note of other OV symptoms (ewcm/cervical position/OV pain)
test in the evening rather than the morning
do twice a day around expected ovulation time (I only 'caught' my surge by testing at 10pm one day after a few faint lines)
make sure you wait the recommended time before reading (my 2nd lines literally came up at 4-5 minutes)

Some women get lines all month, some none at all. Ii think many people would say not to rely on them solely as a conception aid.

BCLass · 18/02/2008 19:05

Worked everytime for me, always first thing in the morning, ov CD15 or 16/27, so later than you would think.

currantbunmum · 18/02/2008 19:12

We used them with both DD's as I have really irreg. periods. They were spot on both times, I think I used the clear blue ones, hope you have more luck with them.

Denny185 · 18/02/2008 19:34

I used them with DS, according to them I didnt ovulate but 2 weeks later got a BFP. They wernt cheap ones either maybe I had a duff batch.

Katie3677 · 19/02/2008 10:54

I've got a faint line today, so suppose that's something. Up until now its been completely blank

yes, worked for me. got an 11 month old.

haggisaggis · 19/02/2008 11:45

The only way I ever got pregnant was to use OV tests.

Teuch · 19/02/2008 11:47

that should be the LH building up in your urine...I would test again this evening.

Oh, and get busy ...you don't want to miss out by sitting staring at sticks!!!

Mum1369 · 19/02/2008 11:49

A line is a line - faint or otherwise ! I would test again a bit later in the day - it will probably be darker then. Go for it !!!
Good luck !

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 19/02/2008 11:50

I have never been successful with ov sticks, and with hindsight I do ov every month on day 14, so go figure?

If you find they are not working for you, look out for other signs (ov pain, cervical mucus and temp shift.) Can highly recommend the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility. A great read whether you are ttc or not.

beaniesteve · 19/02/2008 11:53

Hiya... I used one this month and got a very deep blue line. Thing is I tested in the morning and didn't have any left to test in the evening. Is it really bad to do it in the morning and can it give you a false positive?

Also - am I right in thinking many of you were successful in getting pregnant because you used Ovulation sticks/tests? Is it that useful?

I hope it is because this it the first month I have known I am baout to ovulate and I am really hoping we've had sex at the right time

Katie3677 · 19/02/2008 12:05

How important is it to let the urine reach room temperature? Just did another test but no line showing up again now, was wondering if that is because i didn't wait after weeing?!

OP posts:
Teuch · 19/02/2008 12:16

Firstly, OV tests are not the same as HPT's...a faint line is a negative. It is only when the line is as dark as, or darker than, the control line that it is positive.

Most women get there LH surge showing in the urine later in the day, which is why afternoon/evening testing is preferred. You shouldn't get a false positive in the morning, but might 'miss' your surge by getting a negative when it would have shown later in athe day.

I never let the urine get to room temperature.

sorry, meant this page!!

beaniesteve · 19/02/2008 13:01

Ah - well mine was about 11am and it was very dark. Fingers crossed eh

Mum1369 · 19/02/2008 13:48

Sorry - Teuch, you are quite right (it has been a while since I used them)
Beaniesteve - I found them extremely useful -I only ever got pregnant by having sex when they showed that I was ovulating, but I guess that's obvious given that timing is everything !!

beaniesteve · 19/02/2008 14:16

hurrah!
