@Tillybabs good to hear from you. Is the RI with your clinic? I just had NK cell bloods today, felt like they were taking all my blood but it turned out to be 4 vials when I turned round to look lol.

I’m so fed up of it all. Looks like dh has 100% antisperm antibodies. I just do not expect this to work now, I’m all out of hope and don’t even know where to start on how angry I am that no one checked this until 3.5 years in. The NHS semen analysis, and any basic one, is next to useless. He had 60% motility today and we’d never have got ivf funding if they’d seen that. But what good is 60% motility when they aren’t swimming forward? They’re all fucked up by the antibodies and barely moving.

Hey,

I just did my first injection last night, well DH did it ... I actually got really scared & burst into tears right before 😬😵‍💫. DH had to calm me down & bring me back to earth.

Anyway, there was a bit of leakage on the injection site after. Has this happened to anyone before?
I also can't get a bubble out of my pen. I'm in the clinic for a scan this afternoon, so I'll ask them too.

xx

beckyCarlos · 23/02/2023 08:38

@JeanieJ all of that is totally normal 😊 i think your super brave letting your husband do it, I couldn't bare thinking about that! (Hes too squeamish anyway lol, when I got comfortable with it I made him watch so he understood what I was going through and he had to sit down 🤣)

My first couple I cried because it was unfair, because I was scared, because I didnt know what I was doing, and felt so ill after I had to lie down for 10 minutes!

Sometimes theres a bit of clear fluid (assume its drugs but I'm not 100% sure) in a little blob at the injection site, totally normal and theyre still working. If youre like me sometimes it'll go a bit wrong and you'll have a little blob of blood - also totally normal.

I was also obsessed with/freaked out by the air bubbles, but as long as theyre at the top when you inject its fine, they wont go into you, and even if they do it's not going in a vein so it'll just feel a bit nippy or cause a bruise 😊 x x x

JeanieJ · 23/02/2023 09:00

@beckyCarlos thanks so much for responding. Its reassuring to know I'm not alone.
I went to bed worrying it was all done wrong. I was already worried that my fridge got too cold for the meds last week, but that's another story.
I have a scan today, so Im gonna ask the clinic lots of questions today just to check everything.

Oh, my husband has to do my injections because I'm so squeamish, I can't do it. I can't even look. It's a real test of trust for us though 😂.

Hope you're ok today xx

beckyCarlos · 23/02/2023 11:01

Im definitely in awe of people who can let their partners inject! My biggest fear was having to have whichever injection it is that goes in your bum, someone else has to do that, and its my worst nightmare lol.

Good idea with the list of questions, it'll reassure you loads! I once mixed my stims 'wrong' so I mixed to vials to half an ampule (because I forgot to flick the air to the top) and I had such a sleepless night 🤣 (everything was fine)

It just feels like injecting yourself for stims is too 'responsible' and like something a trained professional should be doing 🤣 x

JeanieJ · 23/02/2023 16:04

Hi @beckyCarlos just had my scan & you're right, I feel much more reassured. The doc suggested I inject in my thighs because I have more fat there, but I dunno ... I'm just getting my head around doing my tummy.

My dose has been increased because it was prescribed based on an old amh test & I just got new results two weeks ago (my amh dropped alot recently).

Hope everyone is ok Xx

beckyCarlos · 23/02/2023 18:51

Some people do find thigh easier (personally I have some lovely belly fat, but my thighs are pretty muscly and the idea of it freaked me out haha) my acupuncturist was all about the thigh when she did hers though.

Glad you feel reassured 😊 x x

beckyCarlos · 23/02/2023 18:52

Sorry, missed the bit about AMH, good that they've picked it up and are increasing your dose, better to find it out now than after 😊 x

Kay00 · 23/02/2023 19:15

@JeanieJ well done on your first injection! My OH also does mine 🙈 I'm far too scared to inject myself lol. We find it's an oddly bonding experience and it helps my OH feel like he's involved.

I will update you all about my wtf conversation with my consultant a little later when I settle down for the evening x

Particularprick · 25/02/2023 20:54

How are your injections going @jeaniej? I remember freaking out and crying with my first one then by the end of round two doing them one handed doing them while simultaneously doing tequila slammers (not really but almost). I wouldn't run. Just take it easy, frustrating and boring as it is.

@thislittlebird what do the antibodies do? Live in the sperm and fuck it up?

@kay00 hope you're ok after your wtf appointment?

Nothing to report here. I still haven't booked any consultations or done anything regarding the next round.

thislittlebird · 25/02/2023 23:31

@Particularprick yeah they attach to the head or tail of sperm and attack them. So there’s basically no chance of them getting to an egg with such high levels, they’ll be immotile long before that. It explains a lot for us, I guess, but it’s hard to accept our chances are even worse than they were.

I’m waiting for my Nk cell test results and DH is waiting for another sperm fragmentation test. We’re seeing nhs andrology on Monday and then I suppose we’ll see our private clinic again in a few weeks.

@JeanieJ hope the injections are ok. Dh did mine, I couldn’t do it, at least not first of all. He’s much less chaotic than I am and more suited to it.

@Kay00 how was the wtf appointment?

OP posts:
JeanieJ · 26/02/2023 09:12

@Particularprick @thislittlebird @Kay00 thank you. It is getting easier now 🙌🏻 & no more leakage. Im on gonal f. The symptoms aren't too bad, but it's early days.
I have a scan tomorrow, so we'll see how I'm responding 🤞🏻

@thislittlebird that's shit about the antibodies 💔 what test did you do to find out?
xx

Kay00 · 27/02/2023 22:35

@thislittlebird those antibodies are fascinating, but so horribly unfortunate that your husband has them. Is there a cure, or a treatment that can help you fertilise eggs via IVF?

@JeanieJ how did your scan go today? How many days through stims are you? I'm glad to hear it's all going ok for you xx

I realised that I forgot to update you about my wtf appointment, sorry!

It was interesting, she was very sorry that the round hadn't worked and she wanted to try again. She said there was little she would change though, which was very similar to what the other clinic said. She said she would offer more progesterone in my LP to help reduce the bleeding (same as the other clinic), but she was reluctant to offer a freeze all unless I was already bleeding on day 5 (like I was in my most recent cycle).

But she did offer one alternative... She offered me Ovarian Drilling (LOD). I can get it on the NHS and the waiting list is 3 to 4 months long. Essentially it's under a general anaesthetic and they drill a few holes into each ovary to release liquid. It's meant to help balance out hormones in women with severe PCOS. She had a patient similar to me a few years ago who got pregnant in an IVF round a couple of months after LOD.

So, I'm going to give it a go. I'm on the waiting list, so should be getting the surgery in May/June. And will aim for a round of IVF in August/September. I did ask if I could do a round of IVF now, and I can, but I think it makes more sense for me to wait, and take a long deserved break to get me body into shape before my next round of IVF.

I'm not expecting miracles, but keen to see how the drilling will effect my hormones. Lots of women get pregnant naturally after LOD, and a few studies shows that after LOD, with IVF, your chances of success raise to 50%, so that's better than my current chances... It still sounds bloody scary though 😬

The things we put ourselves through!

thislittlebird · 27/02/2023 23:19

@JeanieJ we asked the clinic to prep the sample as if they were doing IVF and the embryologist saw the problem. There is an official test called MAR or bead test, something like that.

@Kay00 why are they worried about a freeze all? In case there’s nothing to freeze? It’s quite common now, you just pay extra and they’ll do it at my clinic.

The ovarian drilling sounds like a good option tbh. It’s something to try, you never know, it might make a difference. More progesterone sounds good too.

So we had our guys appointment today. Backstory of this is, we had our failed nhs cycle review in November and we asked what we could do next, specifically, could we see their specialist for dh. He’s one of the top andrologists and there’s only a few around, we saw another one in 2021 (Mr Ramsay).

In December there was some confusion because we were booked in with a woman in February (today’s appointment), I kicked up a fuss because that was not the guy and suddenly we had two appointments: one in January with urology and today’s andrology one in the ACU. The one in January was with a fellow. Didn’t order hormone tests, only ordered a varicocele scan for DH. Dh had the scan at the weekend. The fellow told us DH’s sperm were fine, there were plenty and we should conceive naturally 🙄🙄🙄. Also banged on about maternal age blah blah.

We get to the ACU today for the appointment and guess who is there!!!! Oh, it’s the fellow again. We just laughed and said this is going to be useless, he’ll just say dh is fine again. We filled him in on the antisperm antibodies, he said DH’s varicocele is tiny and a non-issue. He asked if we’d had hormone tests done for dh (🙄🙄🙄) I said “yes, we paid for them privately after we saw you” and he said “oh, I could have ordered them for you” (🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄). Anyway, I turned round and said look, no offence to you but we’re frustrated because we were told we would be seeing the main guy and we have not seen him. He goes away and does some stuff, comes back and says go back to the waiting room and you can see him soon!!!!

Then we see the main guy, the sperm legend himself and he did not disappoint. He’s ordered every test he can for dh on the nhs and the ones they don’t do he’s asked his private secretary to arrange with our private clinic. He gave me his PA emails and said email them all the test results, told us to email the new DNA frag due in a couple of weeks, he’s even ordered karyotyping for dh because it’s a complicated case. The only ones he couldn’t do were reactive oxygen species and hidden infection tests, but that’s fine, it’s such a huge help financially to have seen him. He said the standard nhs tests are insufficient in complex cases, essentially, which we knew, but good luck getting anyone else to admit a basic SA tells you sod all.

It was honestly like night and day. From that first dude to the next one was just an incredible difference. Couldn’t really believe it, we walked out shocked to the core to receive proper care and just incredibly relieved someone is helping us. I think he said he’s looking for the cause of the antibodies, and he usually can find something. Told dh only to take impryl and no other supplements too, including stopping vitamin c which can cause sperm some damage, and we’ll hear from or see him in a month when all the results are back.

JeanieJ · 28/02/2023 07:45

@thislittlebird wow, that's a mad experience 😳, but it sounds like you're on the right track now & getting the care you need?🙂
What did the main guy think about the varicocele? Did he have any thoughts about an upcoming round or does he want to wait & see all the test results?

@Kay00 this also sounds promising 🙂 I have never heard of ovarian drilling (what a term), but sounds like it could help increase your chances? I hope you don't need to wait too long 🤞🏻

I'm doing ok with the stims - no major symptoms. Had a scan yesterday & they could see about 12-14, so I've introduced the 2nd injection now. I have another scan on Thursday. All going well, I have my EC on Sat or Mon.
I was a little disappointed with my follicle count. I thought I'd get more because o started with 14/15 and the doc told me not to expect any more from now. In saying that, the doc said it's good & i won't be overstimulated.
This is such a process 😳
I'm just trying to take it day by day.

xx

Kay00 · 28/02/2023 09:16

@JeanieJ 12-14 sounds ideal. More isn't necessary better, I had 36 follicles, and 21 eggs retrieved, but the quality is rubbish. Less is more in this business x

JeanieJ · 28/02/2023 09:39

@Kay00 thank you.
You are right. I guess, I'm so aware that there's a big question mark on DH's sperm that I wanted lots of eggs to compensate.
They could still all be totally fine though. It's just a gamble 🤷🏻

The fyremadel is like a bee sting though. Dunno if anyone else has tried this, but about 30 seconds after the injection, it stings like a bee ... so weird!

xx

Kay00 · 28/02/2023 09:48

If your DH sperm is questionable on the day then they might escalate to ICSI. This happened to us, and with ICSI we had a good fertilisation rate.

JeanieJ · 28/02/2023 10:21

@Kay00 we are doing ICSI 🙂
I'm just hoping the dna frag doesn't crop up & cause us issues 🤞🏻🤞🏻

JeanieJ · 02/03/2023 17:03

Hey guys,

Little update. My EC is scheduled for Saturday morning.

Had a scan today & I had 10 follicles, but 3 of them were questionable in size.
I'm pretty disappointed, but it's only takes one good & egg & one good sperm at the end of the day and maybe the ICSI will give us good fertilization rates.
Hopefully those 3 follicles catch up & we get a decent haul.

Hope everyone's ok today xx

beckyCarlos · 02/03/2023 19:27

@thislittlebird wow, I'm mind blown with your update! It sounds positive but why has it taken so long for you to get there any why did they send you to see the non-main guy first?! You had to kick off again 🤯

@jeaniej aw thats a fab number! (I'm follicularly challenged lol) your smallies might catch up but thats plenty for some good quality eggs/embryos 🥰 sending you growth based thoughts! X

JeanieJ · 05/03/2023 09:36

Hey guys,

I had my EC yesterday & boy am I tender today. My right ovary feels like it did all of the heavy lifting!

I got 14 eggs, 9 mature & 7 fertilized.
I'm really pleased for this day 1 result. I totally understand that there's a drop off rate (and a high one with our issue), but I'm focusing on the positives today.
Fingers crossed everything is ok over the next 5 days 🤞🏻🤞🏻

beckyCarlos · 05/03/2023 12:16

Aw @JeanieJ thats amazing!!! Rest up today, your insides have been poked and prodded, you deserve a day of lying on the sofa being delivered tea and cake x

JeanieJ · 05/03/2023 12:24

Thank you @beckyCarlos I will for sure!
I had no idea I'd be so tender after this.
Hope you're having a lovely Sunday xx
