My granny had her last baby at 44.

Two aunties had babies at 46 & 47 respectively (for both it was their last baby after big gap, other children grown up!).

it is much less likely to happen spontaneously/with your own eggs though, and a far higher rate of miscarriage, as I’m sure you know.

Did the aunties by any chance have unmarried late teen/early 20s daughters at the time of the "surprise" last baby's arrival..?

Yes, many (and many of them historical - I research this sort of area). But it's much rarer for it to be a first baby. There are loads of women who have first babies in their teens, 20s or 30s and continue into their 40s, occasionally even their early 50s. It is far less common to hear of someone naturally conceiving a first baby in their mid-40s. I'm not sure how much this is biology and how much has to do with coincidences of social/cultural pressures (eg., I know even in the 70s, a relative of mine married for the first time aged 40, and it was considered extremely shocking she got pregnant, very much 'not the done thing'. If you account for that pressure to avoid pregnancy, of course you will have lower numbers of 40-something women conceiving).

My grandmother - she thought it was gallstones!

Bosabosa · 29/04/2022 22:42

My friend had her first naturally at 45, took 2 years.

Mariposista · 29/04/2022 23:20

Yes. A friend of mine who is also a world swimming champion. She married at 40 and was 45 when she had her very healthy baby. 10 days after birth (natural) she was back in the pool, and has swum almost every day throughout her pregnancy. Shows it can be done!

Thanks for the comments.. as you say if it's going to happen it will ... otherwise nothing I can do about it ...but it's always nice to hear positive stories

Me! Two natural conceptions at 42 and 45, two healthy children. I was incredibly lucky.

Lots of people saying their granny a child so in late 40s
realistically they may have been fronting for a pregnant child

Pretty well documented that childbirth rates to older women in pre contraception days were fairly high. Lots of women of my great grandmother’s generation had children over a 20 year period. It’s only in the last decade that birth rates in the over 40s have started to return to those levels due to women delaying motherhood.

wibblypig22 · 02/05/2022 12:34

Wow that gives me hope congratulations @MrsWooster

Is there anything stopping you giving nature a hand?

MardyOldGoth · 04/05/2022 15:04

I know one who did at 44.

LittleDoveLove · 04/05/2022 19:54

@wibblypig22 have you read 'it starts with the egg'. That might help with supplements etc too x

FAQs · 04/05/2022 20:00

@wibblypig22 yes 3! One at 46 and two at 48. Non related in anyway just social circle had children older.

Aichek · 04/05/2022 20:06

My nan had her last at 46 (big gap, accident). She wasn't fronting as she only had sons! Menopausal last gasp

cptartapp · 04/05/2022 20:08

My friend had her second set of twins at 47. Her first set were 17,

bbc73 · 05/05/2022 17:43

I think it is impossible to conceive the first baby. But women who already gave birth can keep getting pregnant in their mid 40s.

veronicagoldberg · 05/05/2022 19:26

My friend had her last baby at 45.

Aquamarine1029 · 05/05/2022 19:28

My great grandmother did at 49.

feellikeanalien · 05/05/2022 19:30

I had my first and only baby when I had just turned 45.

TheOldLadyOfThreadneedleStreet · 05/05/2022 19:32

One of my husband’s team had healthy baby girl last week at 48. She didn’t know about it until late on in the pregnancy.

WeeFecker · 05/05/2022 19:34

yes Sue radford was pregnant with her last baby at 44, although I think that was about 3 years ago and no more babies which does seem to be the trend in those massive tv family- the baby’s stop at about 45ish.

I know a few in real life who have had babies in early 40s but I’ve no idea if it was natural or not as often people don’t discuss it
