Clomid 50mg PCOS

Rainbowchasing2022 · 10/04/2022 09:43

Hello

I had a miscarriage in March at 8 weeks. Currently on my first period since MC (35 days since start of MC bleed and normally have 29/30 day cycles)

I have seen my GP who has advised she can prescribe 50mg of Clomid over a 3 month period before I have to be referred back to gynaecology (the waiting list is huge! :( )

Has anyone had any luck on 50mg? I believe the cycles won’t be tracked in any way

Thanks x

Hey, I'm on clomid. My first round was 50mg, I had scans and bloods which showed it didn't work for me. I'm on 100mg now, had a 26mm follicle on CD12 and ovulated on CD15. Could you push to be monitored on it?

TypicallyTopically · 10/04/2022 10:09

I wasn't monitored. I only has blood taken every month 7 days post ovulation for 3 months. I went up to 150mg and now have a 4 year old

Kath2021 · 10/04/2022 10:40

I am due to start after this cycle and my consultant has said it should be monitored because it can cause multiple pregnancies (ie triplets or quads). It may just be because I specifically have a very high egg reserve but I will be scanned to check before I ovulate x

Rainbowchasing2022 · 10/04/2022 10:54

No idea I think it is due to the GP prescribing it so that’s why it isn’t. I’m not sure if she can only prescribe 50mg and no higher hence the need to not track? :(

I did look into paying privately for tracking but it seems I may as well cut out the GP all together to do that as the tablets are cheap- it’s the tracking that is expensive.

I have regular periods monthly by myself just don’t ovulate due to the PCOS. I have seen a lot of people need the dose increased so wondering if just being on 50mg is a waste of time or if i should try it anyway as have nothing to lose!

28 now and constantly worrying time is running out xx

@xoJellyBean that sounds so promising!! Good luck please update 😍

@TypicallyTopically did your GP prescribe the clomid or a gynaecologist? Amazing you fell pregnant though that is reassuring !!

@Kath2021 I have heard it can cause multiples. My GP didn’t even mention that though 😬 I asked about tracking she said no need on 50mg. I can see maybe no need for scans but I feel it’s a little pointless if I’m not even having ovulation confirmed. I could do 3 months for no reason xx

@Rainbowchasing2022 so I have gone private as the wait was so long and honestly it's the best thing I've done. I have had to pay for couple of consults but when I need Clomid the consultant is referring me over to his nhs clinic as I am eligible my gp is just a bit clueless about pcos and not ovulating. I therefore will have bipassed the stupidly long wait and won't have to pay for the clomid and monitoring. It's worth looking into if you can.

Have you heard of medi cash? They have various plans (I pay about £27 a month) and they will cover a consultation. Also may be worth looking into as a private consultant was £250 for my local private hospital. Medi cash also covers fertility reflexology and acupuncture too so you can really get your moneys worth x

IntergalacticP · 10/04/2022 11:52

50mg worked for me.

If you're regularly having a period and just not ovulating I would say it was worth a shot, especially if your bmi is within the "normal" range as apparently that helps.

I would read up on what hyper ovarian simulation symptoms are. You also need to track ovulation- I would suggest opks although I know some people with pcos say they don't work for them.

My first round I started my period on cycle day 17- I wasn't having regular periods and had to use provera to induce a bleed first. I think this fake period covered up the fact I was about to ovulate naturally (rare but did happen!).

Cycle 2 was monitored and I ovulated cd 18 or 19.

Cycle 3 I ovulated day 14- this was the one that was successful.

So I would say time intercourse as if you're going to ovulate day 14 (I.e try and hit day 10, 12, 14) but keep tracking with opks.

Good luck

Rainbowchasing2022 · 10/04/2022 12:23

@Kath2021 thank you so much I will definitely look into that! Sounds good.

I did pay for a private consultation around 8 years ago before having a lap for endometriosis (blessed with that too :( ) and I managed to get put onto the nhs list that way but didn’t know if that would still happen these days with the Covid pressures! I did consider paying to see the sane doctor but then when the GP said about prescribing the clomid and running all the bloods for me I thought I may try this option before turning to private 😬 that plan sounds good though definitely going to look at it. I do have private health care but unfortunately they don’t cover anything fertility related.

@IntergalacticP my BMI is 28 so not where it should be but the GP said it’s fine if under 30? Hoping that is true! Not sure I’d get it to 25 anytime soon I lost two stone last year but even still not eating anything bad and as clean as possible I seem to be stuck where I am at the moment. I was going to look into exercising a lot more but then fell pregnant and since that have felt rubbish with the MC pain and now the period afterwards. I do need to try something though! Oh m glad 50mg worked for you! Did you just have blood test monitoring or scans? Xx

OP posts:
IntergalacticP · 10/04/2022 12:33

I'm sure 28 will be fine if that's what your doc said. They monitored my second cycle with scans every other day from about day 11 and then a blood test at about day 23ish which confirmed ovulation. Third cycle they said it's working so no need to monitor again.

Rainbowchasing2022 · 10/04/2022 12:42

@IntergalacticP wish they would monitor mine. Maybe I’ll pay for scans for one month and see what happens if I can find a private clinic who can do that 🙈 so glad it worked for you though 😍

I always worry and think I have high testosterone. Have acne on my back and hair on chin etc. Hoping that don’t prevent me from getting a baby at the end of this journey xx

OP posts:
IntergalacticP · 10/04/2022 12:45

Even if they won't monitor, I'm not sure you would really have anything to lose by taking them? The scan monitoring is a bit more difficult but I bet you could get a day 21ish blood test without too much issue? That would at least let you know if you ovulated or not?

Rainbowchasing2022 · 10/04/2022 13:04

@IntergalacticP that is true! I will maybe push the GP on the blood test then just to get an answer! :) thank you 🤞🏼 Xx

OP posts:
xoJellyBean · 10/04/2022 13:14

@Rainbowchasing2022 if you can afford to go private and be monitored, I'd strongly advise you to! GPs have no clue about fertility treatments. There's risk of multiple pregnancies and also OHSS. And if you don't manage to ovulate at all or at a decent time with 50mg you will save the bother of going through 3 months of it and your dose can be adjusted, I'm hoping I don't have to do it much longer 🤣🤞🏼

Rainbowchasing2022 · 10/04/2022 14:46

@xoJellyBean I think I’ll ask for a blood test. I’m not sure if the OHSS is too high a risk at only 50mg but can be when increasing the dose which is why she probably isn’t allowed to increase from 50. Think I will try and see what happens. I’m going to have one more period before I try anything as I’m only currently on my first period since MC so I think il give my body one more month to sort itself .. and I need to wait for the results of all the bloods in hscing next week first. If there’s any other issue underlying the clomid will need to go on the back burner until it’s resolved :( think I may have Vit D deficiency as did previously so would want that sorted first as it can lead to MC xx

Evening all. Im also taking Clomid but my periods are regular. Reason I was prescribed it is because my progesterone is low so some months I release an egg and some I don’t. I’m also new to use of Clomid; this is my first “cycle” using it. I was told to take first dose on day 2 of period for 5 days then ovulation is usually a week later. I’m planning on using digital ovulation tests just to get the ovulation dates right however. I too need day 21 bloods taken which fertility clinic said should be a week before next period. Dependent on blood result, Clomid dose may be altered.

MO22 · 04/05/2022 21:40

@Kath2021 hi! Jumping in here but I have medicash through work, what did you put the consultation through as?? Thinking about going private with PCOS post miscarriage as have had two periods in one month, could I possibly ask what they have done for you re Clomid? Tempted to bite the bullet, stop all the angst and just ask for it...

HairyBum · 04/05/2022 21:45

what are your day 21 progesterone test results?

I have regular monthly periods and miscarried once in a 4 year period of infertility. 50mg of clomid enabled me to have two children, two years apart.

@Rainbowchasing2022 My BMI was 28 when i had fertility treatment (NHS) for PCOS in 2020. My consultant prescribed letrozole rather than clomid and said it was more effective with my BMI. I was tracked and monitored - and conceived on 3rd cycle when i was 35. If no luck with clomid, worth looking into whether letrozole would work better for you.

HairyBum · 04/05/2022 21:50

Your Gp or surgery nurse can do the day 21 progesterone test to see if 50mg helps you ovulate or not

Rainbowchasing2022 · 07/05/2022 20:56

I’m going to ask if they can do the day 21 day test to be honest.

im not feeling overly optimistic about clomid working for me. I had tests done where they said my testosterone came back “slightly raised” although it was like 6. Something instead of 4. Something I think so seems more than slightly unfortunately. I wonder what hope there is if testosterone is high in comparison to other hormones.

I will try it for a month and see what happens I think although periods haven’t been right since my miscarriage in March.

it is a relief to see the 50mg has worked for some people though!

I don’t think my GP can prescribe the Letrozole unfortunately and a referral to the nhs would be around 2 years where I am currently just to be seen by a fertility specialist :(

xx

Rainbowchasing2022 · 07/05/2022 21:02

@HairyBum do you have PCOS? With regular periods? My doctor looks at me like I’m mad when I say I have regular periods as though I am lying 🙈 seems rare! I naively thought it was a sign of Better fertility but clearly not Xx

OP posts:
Applesarenice · 07/05/2022 21:06

I can’t remember the dose now but worked for me on a low dose on my second cycle. My cycles had worked up to 50-60days

Alexis7890 · 07/05/2022 21:17

I hope clomid works for you. My GP said they couldn’t prescribe anything and it had to go through nhs referral to the specialists so I’ve been going through the tests with them now. They’ve said letrozole as well instead of clomid. 2 years is a long wait to get seen by them for you!!

Rainbowchasing2022 · 07/05/2022 21:22

Thank you @Alexis7890 They apparently have a major backlog due to Covid. I have been on the waiting list for Rheumatology after having inflammation show in a blood test two years ago and have received a letter saying the wait time for an appointment is around 4 years!!! So have to be seen by some private organisation instead of the nhs as they can’t cope with demand! Sad

it’s so cruel as I wanted children a lot. When I had the chemical in June I thought it was awful but as the months went by I was like actually maybe children aren’t in my future because it’s been months and haven’t conceived. Maybe I should forget the idea. In january I got a new job and must have been so pre occupied when my period didn’t come in feb I was like hmm odd! Turns out I was pregnant. The only month i didn’t consider it once. Since that it’s like it consumes me daily and it’s all I think about :(

im so glad it worked for you. Did you have the scans for tracking or just take it xx

Alexis7890 · 07/05/2022 21:26

Oh wow, it must depend where you are as here has moved quite fast in comparison. Don’t give up hope I’m sure it will happen for you. We haven’t started any meds yet just the fertility clinic tests to get started but I don’t have periods naturally maybe 1 or 2 a year if I’m lucky. So letrozole/other meds or ivf is our only chance unfortunately. I understand the consuming feeling, don’t give up hope I’m sure it will happen for you x
