Low AMH

glf777 · 26/11/2021 15:40

I don’t understand any of this, so please bare with me. I had an AMH test which has come back as low for my age (I’m 26), and I’m pretty sure she said it’s 3.16/31.6 (didn’t quite hear which one). I don’t really know what my options are, and what I should do.

She just said start trying to conceive sooner rather than later.

Anyone else in a simile position?

Hi, if the result is 3.16 then that is low for your age but it absolutely doesn’t mean you can’t have children. It just may be more difficult and need some intervention.

Was the test done as part of fertility investigations?

I’m going to ask MN to move your post to a different board if that’s ok as you won’t receive many replies in this section.

glf777 · 26/11/2021 16:03

Thank you for responding.

I expected her to advise me as to what options I should consider etc, but nothing.

I paid privately to have a pelvic ultrasound and AMH test to get an idea of my fertility.

Thank you! I don’t really know how this site works

There is a huge difference between 31. 6 and 3.16. Can you ask for the written /typed report.

DawnMumsnet · 26/11/2021 16:17

We're moving this thread over to our Conception topic for the OP.

No problem Smile

Thanks for moving the thread @DawnMumsnet

@glf777 Do you have endometriosis or other autoimmune conditions? Did they give you an antral follicle count from the ultrasound?

It’s a really upsetting thing to be told and like you, I wasn’t given any advice or counselling on what the result meant, just some very unhelpful and upsetting comments by the fertility nurse. It really isn’t the end all and be all, especially as you are so young.

glf777 · 26/11/2021 17:04

Not that I’m aware of, and I asked if I should have tests for things like that and the consultant said no. She said she could visualise a good amount of follicles on the ultrasound.

It is such a hard thing to hear. She made it sound like if I don’t have a baby now, I won’t be able to have one.

Have you been able to conceive since being told that? I have previously had a miscarriage, so I’m worried.

GodspeedJune · 26/11/2021 17:29

It’s good news that she could see a good amount of follicles. Would you be able to get a second opinion?

Unfortunately we haven’t been able to conceive but investigations showed I have endometriosis (which probably caused the low AMH) and blocked tubes so natural conception isn’t possible. Sorry to hear about your miscarriage. It does show you are able to conceive, and low AMH isn’t necessarily a barrier to natural conception. It’s more important for things like ivf.

glf777 · 27/11/2021 20:03

I think I am going to book in for more tests, and with a different person/specialist.

I don’t appear to have problems conceiving; but issues with staying pregnant. I guess I’m panicking because I’m 26 and wanted to leave babies for a few years now.

I’m concerned that if I require IVF I don’t stand a chance.

@glf777 31.6 is high and indicates something quite different to 3.16. I would definitely go back and get the number in writing like someone else suggested, then go from there. Definitely do not panic until you get the correct number, private test results are usually readily available so it should be easy to get hold of.

glf777 · 28/11/2021 23:13

It is 3.16, which has completely thrown me off. Now I feel like any chance of having children has disappeared. I am in a difficult position as my partner still doesn’t want to try for a couple of years.

OP posts:
thislittlebird · 28/11/2021 23:42

@glf777 Did they give you any more info about it being low? And is it in pmol/l? There’s two units of measurement so I would also double check that it’s that one and not ng/ml.

It doesn’t exactly tally if the doctor said you had a decent follicle count either, I would be tempted to get another scan and blood test done elsewhere next month. Honestly, it hasn’t disappeared even if it is 3.16. You’re young and you still have eggs, it doesn’t mean you won’t get pregnant or stay pregnant if you’re ovulating normally. It’s a huge shock to hear I’m sure and they should be giving you more advice either way.

dutchessmom · 30/11/2021 12:09

I think it's very good that you're booking more tests with another specialist. You need to trust your doctor and be able to communicate well. Try as much as possible to not to worry just yet, your very young, you will figure it out.

glf777 · 03/12/2021 19:40

I just got my report through. Unfortunately it’s 3.16 pmol/l so it’s terrible. I also have a retroverted uterus and indistinctive endometrial margins. I remember the lady saying I have a slightly tilted uterus (so does my mum), and couldn’t see the top of my uterus that clearly.

All that the specialist suggested was ‘plan pregnancy soon and keep trying’.

I have booked an advanced ultrasound and consultation at Create next Tuesday for hopefully some more advice:

thislittlebird · 03/12/2021 20:29

@glf777 sorry to hear that it’s definitely low. Them not really guiding you is frustrating, but create specialise in low AMH so they should be more forthcoming. Did they say what your follicle count was like? The good thing is you know early rather than later in your 30s and you may well conceive naturally. Have you already been actively ttc?

glf777 · 03/12/2021 20:50

I kind of accepted that it was low, so I wasn’t surprised. She counted whilst doing a scan and said that there was a reasonable amount, but only counted on one of them out loud. She didn’t confirm how many there was altogether.

So I had a termination at 8 weeks in 2019, due to an abusive relationship. This year I fell pregnant whilst on contraception which resulted in a medically managed miscarriage. I started bleeding a couple of days after I was due on, but it didn’t clear for weeks. So I haven’t technically TTC naturally.

I feel guilt because I have had the opportunity before, and chose not to have one.

OP posts:
thislittlebird · 03/12/2021 21:35

@glf777 don’t feel guilty, circumstances can’t be helped and you made the best decision for you and a potential child. You can get pregnant which is a good sign, so when you decide to ttc you’re in a good position with age + fecundity on your side. Obviously if you’re not in a position to try relationship wise or don’t want to yet then Create will likely talk to you about egg freezing as an option most likely. Either way, all is definitely not lost and at least you know what you’re contending with now.
