Has anyone fallen pregnant after the Covid vaccine?

Hi,

I’ve been offered the vaccine. I actually had Covid last month, so am wary of having the vaccine so soon, plus i’m awaiting embryo transfer in Cyprus (As soon as restrictions lift here and there)

I’m really torn. I keep reading about a spike protein in the vaccine and the body potentially attacking the placenta if you become pregnant....

I’d usually jump at the chance of the vaccine, but with IVF pending I just feel as though we have no idea yet as to whether the vaccine impacts IVF success rates.

So, anyone fallen pregnant naturally or via IVF since having the vaccine?

Where do you "keep" reading this?

VillageFete · 16/02/2021 23:24

Many places, including fullfact.org....

Professor Jonathan Stoye, Virologist at the Francis Crick Institute, told Full Fact: “I would never say never, but the possibility is vanishingly small.”

Vanishingly small isn’t really good enough when you’ve spent 6 years trying to complete your family, not to mention the financial strain and the heartache of IVF.

I’m trying to gauge just how many ladies have conceived with no issue after the vaccine.

The vaccine is in its infancy, so how on Earth can we be sure that it won’t impact on natural conception and IVF?

Full fact is fake news AFAIK. There is no mechanism for the vaccine to interfere with the placenta.

RedPandaMama · 16/02/2021 23:31

I've had my first vaccine last week, all went well - I personally have no plans to get pregnant but they do advise against getting vaccinated if you plan to get pregnant any time in the next 3 months - they asked that in the round of questions. It's mainly because they don't know of the long term effects, I think, so need to be cautious.

Obviously you need to think that's 3 months from the last dose too.

So for example with me, I had my first vaccination 10th February, next one will be approx 12 weeks time, so around 5th May, then I'd be advised not to get pregnant for 3 months from then - so no pregnancies until August at least.

As I said I haven't got any plans to be pregnant, but it basically means for 6 months you shouldn't plan to - going off the NHS advice.

Good luck with your journey whatever you decide. Sounds like you've been through it Flowers

VillageFete · 16/02/2021 23:34

Full fact checks specific claims.

I know there’s no evidence for any mechanism by which fertility could be affected, but there’s also no evidence that it won’t be affected? It seems like a real risk for an IVF’er.

I’ve done very limited research as I was only invited for the vaccine this afternoon and haven’t had much time, but with just having Covid 5 weeks ago, I can’t help but feel it’s potentially a bit much.

I saw a reproductive specialist on Friday. My post Covid period was very strange and i’ve had cramps since. He told me that they’re certain that Covid causes inflammation, so i’m guessing the vaccine may do the same? Inflammation is no good for fertility.

@RedPandaMama Thank you. I certainly have been through it. Wouldn’t wish it on anyone.

If I do get vaccinated, then I would absolutely forego the second dose if it meant I could transfer my embryo sooner. I mentally and emotionally cannot keep waiting.

“I would never say never, but the possibility is vanishingly small.”

If that's even a real conversation they're reporting, that's simply how doctors and scientists say "no, that shit would never happen".

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 16/02/2021 23:49

Actually I know someone who had the vaccine in January and has recently become pregnant

alaiwna · 16/02/2021 23:54

It may be tricky to find many who have had the vaccine and are now pregnant given the priority age ranges being targeted at the moment.

Oatgroat · 16/02/2021 23:56

There's an explanation here

FlatteredRhubardFool · 17/02/2021 00:00

I thought the science said that having covid gives you 5 months of protection from covid? Although my neighbour had it twice in that time frame so I'm not sure how accurate that information is. Are you in one of the priority groups for vaccination or been offered it for other reasons? I ask because I'm group 4 and only had mine 10 days ago.
I would delay the embryo transfer until you're fully vaccinated and the world has settled down because being pregnant right now is not a great time especially when you would need to travel for the IVF.

NotJust3SmallWords · 17/02/2021 00:16

I understand your concerns op. Simply based on all the guidance on the numerous things to do or not do to effect the success rates around embryo transfer I'd be worried about adding another unknown. I should emphasis that I have no medical expertise at all though so can't really help, but we're at the start of our ivf process so the thought has crossed my mind.

It may be worth asking your clinic if they can advise on whether it would be safest to delay the vaccine until after your transfer? They might be able to put your mind at rest at least.

Hi @VillageFete I’m interested to know whether you decided to get the vaccine and if you have fallen pregnant. I had the 1st vaccine back in January, then conceived (accidentally) 2 weeks later. I am now 11 weeks pregnant and have my first scan next week. So far everything is well.

jdr1234 · 02/04/2021 21:41

I had my first vaccine on Jan 24th, had my second 2/3 weeks ago and 2 days later found out I was pregnant (not planned) so it definitely did not affect my fertility.

mummysharkk · 02/04/2021 22:10

What did you decide op?

@Purpleismyfavourite hope your scan goes well.

@jdr1234 good to hear proof!

EdgeOfACoin · 03/04/2021 07:48

I agree with that.

Scientists never categorically say 'no'. If you asked them about the chances of seeing a dinosaur running down the M1, they would tell you that such a likelihood is 'vanishingly small'.

Whereland · 03/04/2021 07:54

I had my vaccine in January and fell pregnant in February.

Purpleismyfavourite · 03/04/2021 09:54

@jdr1234 oh yeah we are living proof it doesn’t affect fertility 😂

AllyCat31 · 03/04/2021 11:18

Hey @VillageFete me and OH have discussed it and I won’t be getting the vaccine as were actively TTC. Like @RedPandaMama says it’s two doses with up to 12 weeks in between so that’s possibly 6 months - and I haven’t even been offered it yet (31, no health concerns so I’ll be bottom of the list.) But it’s an easy choice for me as WFH and my OH has now had two doses so that lowers my risk too. If I get pregnant then I’ll just make him do anything that’s a risk as pregnant women were in the shielding cat (when shielding was a thing). I’ll get the vaccine as soon as I’ve had a baby and finished BF as per the NHS guidelines 😊

firsttimemummy321 · 03/04/2021 11:57

@AllyCat31 obviously your choice but the guidance is that you can have it while breastfeeding now :) I'm bf and had mine last month :)

AllyCat31 · 03/04/2021 12:03

@firsttimemummy321 oh that’s great, they must have changed it since the last time I checked!

Starshapeddreams · 03/04/2021 12:08

I had first dose of the vaccine in January and now 10 weeks pregnant.
Have declined my second dose until I have my 12 week scan.

Purpleismyfavourite · 04/04/2021 11:45

@Starshapeddreams @Whereland @jdr1234 keep us updated on your pregnancies and I will do too. @AllyCat31 yup guidelines have changed and is safe to have vaccine while breastfeeding. I am breastfeeding my 2 year old and had the vaccine. You can find info on the government website though as it is a very personal decision xx

Starshapeddreams · 14/04/2021 02:13

Had my 12 week scan - one happy little bean with a heart beat. Didn't get to chat to a doctor about vaccines so I'm still holding off on my second dose for now.

Purpleismyfavourite · 14/04/2021 21:32

I also had my 12 week scan yesterday. Baby healthy and well :) I’m not going ahead with second dose while pregnant x
