Hycosy

ar12345 · 03/02/2021 12:23

I just wanted to put something on about my Hycosy procedure I had yesterday.

I had read a lot of horror stories prior to going to my appointment and I was petrified! It kept me up for nights leading up to it and when I was there I was shaking so much I couldn’t sit still!

My Hycosy was not bad at all! So I hope this can help put anyone that is reading this mind at rest as I know how awful it can be reading about people’s bad experiences.

They started with the internal scan which is all fine nothing different to a normal scan. They then put the spectrum in again fine same as a smear. They then insert the catheter, now unfortunately they had some trouble getting mine in and it took about 15-20 mins of trying and 2 doctors but eventually it went in. It was definitely uncomfortable and painful at times but just like an intense bad period pain nothing worse. They then inflate the balloon I did not even feel this part and then injected the liquid again I felt nothing at this part. Now luckily I had no blockages so this is probably why the injection part was less painful however I have read many stories about people saying the catheter and balloon part are unbearably painful and fortunately for me this was not the case. It is different for everyone so it is good to go in knowing what to expect but I can honestly say if you are nervous please try not to be as for most people it is not a bad procedure. I took two Ibruprofen and paracetamol before hand.

If you have any questions I would be happy to answer Smile

Thank you for this. I’m very concerned about possibly having one in the coming months and wondering if I can skip it if I’m honest. I’m not a good patient at the best of times but at least it sounds not as bad as some experiences. Although can’t say that catheter part is enticing me lmao

Absy · 03/02/2021 14:26

I’ve had it twice. The first time it was painful when they put the foam in. As you said, like menstrual cramps. Second time didn’t really hurt at all but I think my poor uterus has been stretched out by giant babies. I didn’t have blockages either time so maybe that helped as well with the lack of pain. It is supposed to help give your a small fertility bump

Ar12345 · 03/02/2021 16:14

The catheter bit was unpleasant but honestly not unbearable at all! I am such a baby with anything medical, injections, having blood taken I hate it all so I was petrified!! But afterwards I said to the lady was that it! I was so shocked at how little pain there was after some of the things I had read. Obviously it is bad for some people but the lady that did mine said it's very few people that have bad ones so I wouldn't put it off it's worth knowing what is going on and like Absy said it is meant to give a small fertility bump (this is what I am hoping for) so worth a try!!

Hi ladies, I had a HyCoSy today, and i was surprised how I barely felt anything.

However, I am not sure it worked as intended.
The moment they started injecting the fluid, it started running down my buttocks. I told them about it and they said it was ok. And it kept running until the end.
The result was that the doctor said both tubes were blocked as the dye didn't go through at all.
I asked them whether they put enough fluid in. The nurse said yes, it was 15ml. I thought in my head - but a lot of it came back out immediately?

Did the fluid run out during your hycosy inspection? I thought an inflating balloon was supposed to keep the water inside?

Juno231 · 11/03/2021 21:52

@Greengrassfreshair sounds like yours may have come back out because it had nowhere to go due to the blocked tubes.

Greengrassfreshair · 11/03/2021 23:43

@juno231 It started running out the moment she started injecting the fluid. On the screen there wasn't even any fluid inside yet and it was already running out. I suspect the balloon had moved when she was removing the brace, which jumped out a little in the process. Did your hycosy fluid not leak out at all until the end?

Patienceisnotmyvirtue · 12/03/2021 10:39

I also didn't find my Hycosy painful - minor discomfort but that was all. I'd really wound myself up beforehand, expecting it to be agony, but it was like period pains at most.

I took 2 paracetamol beforehand which probably helped. Hopefully this thread will help others going for a Hycosy feel a little less scared, as for me the anticipation was much worse than the procedure. Obviously for some it is quite painful though, I feel lucky!

Sydney1986x · 21/03/2021 14:18

Thanks for sharing ladies, I have mine next Friday and was getting myself into a right state!

Bizawit · 21/03/2021 14:33

Hi! I also had a hycosy this month and it barely hurt at all. No more than an internal scan/ smear test - the specula was the worst bit. Didn’t feel the catheter or dye (my tubes were also clear though). I didn’t even take a painkiller beforehand and it was fine. I was really surprised as I had read horror stories online. I had some cramping afterwards but nothing worse than a regular period and it didn’t last long.

@Greengrassfreshair that sounds really strange. No dye leaked out for me...

Gtcttww86 · 24/03/2021 13:11

I had mine yesterday, the speculum, internal scan and catheter was absolutely fine, it was the dye towards the end that I found really uncomfortable and almost had to ask the doctor to stop but my tubes were clear she said! No dye leaked out for me.

Greengrassfreshair · 26/03/2021 22:30

Hi ladies, I had a second hycosy to get a second opinion in another clinic. It turns both my tubes were "wide open". And this time no dye leaked out during the procedure. So the first one must have not worked, presumably the balloon wasn't fixed correctly.
So if you ever have water dripping down your butt during the hycosy, you should insist to the doctor that she reinserts the catheter properly.
I did drink 20ml castor oil in between the two hycosy as I was worried about two blocked tubes and it gave me some spotting. Think it might have helped to make them "wide open".
Also, both didn't hurt much, only a bit uncomfortable. Personally I find taking blood more painful than hycosy.

I have my hycosy booked for next Thursday and I’m a bit worried because it will be CD14. What cycle day did you all have yours done? I’m really keep to try afterwards (typically I ovulate on day 16/17), when did you first have intercourse after the hycosy?

Mine was similar a few days before I ovulated. For me I just tried as normal from the next day as for me there was no pain or discomfort!

Im due to get an appointment for a HyCoSy in the next few months so this is great to read through 🤗 my biggest concern is similar to a previous poster, what cycle days did you have the appointment? I'm slightly worried it'll be after ovulation so we won't be able to try that month. If it happens it happens and I'll deal with that but hoping it won't be the case!

Also is ttcing that same cycle allowed / safe?

I believe the appointment is usually before you ovulate! The nurse that did mine said fine to continue as normal after 24 hours if you feel ok to do so, so we did!

@maw16 I had mine CD 12. I was told not to try that cycle but I did anyway and got preg (currently 14 weeks ☺️). Apparently if you have already ovulated and the egg is travelling down your tubes , there is a small chance that the procedure could stop / reverse the passage of the egg and potentially cause an ectopic (that’s why I was told to skip a month). However, I track my ovulation and was confident I had not ovulated , and that it would be at least another couple of days before I did. so I went ahead with TTC the next day. I think the risk is small. Do you track your ovulation? I think if you normally ovulate cd 16/17 and you are tracking and haven’t got a peak you should be fine x (clinic may advise differently though).

maw16 · 26/05/2021 17:50

@Bizawit congratulations! Hoping for a story like yours! Yes I track my cycles with OPKS and BBT, the last three cycles I ovulated on day CD15, then CD17 and last cycle was CD18, so hoping for a slightly delayed ovulation! Do you know roughly how long you ovulated after the procedure?

Bizawit · 26/05/2021 18:14

@maw16 aw fingers crossed for you! 🤞🏻🤞🏻 I’m a big believer in the hycosy after my experience.

So according to all the dating scans I’ve had, I ovulated 2 days after the procedure- CD 14. I thought I had ovulated about 4 days after (cd 16), but I didn’t track using BBT - only OPKs - so I cant know for sure. My understanding is that as long as you haven’t ovulated prior to the procedure (and the egg is already on its way when they run the dye through), there’s no reason it should be an issue. but I should say, I’m not a medical professional, so i can only speak from my personal understanding based on what I was told. x

choccrumpet · 26/05/2021 18:19

@ar12345 I thought that was the case but was worried they might schedule it after if they've got no space or something. Might be worrying about nothing then! I ovulate late, in day 20+ so am hopeful it will be okay.

@Bizawit that's really hopeful to hear, congratulations on your pregnancy! 🤗

maw16 · 26/05/2021 18:21

@Bizawit Thankyou, all of this info has really helped! I’ll check with the clinic just to be sure but I’m sure they said we are okay to try immediately after so fingers crossed 🤞🏼

HannahN90 · 01/06/2021 21:01

Hey,
I had my hycosy today - I was CD10. I usually ovulate around CD16-19.

The lady at the clinic said to avoid TTC this month as they are unsure of the effects of the dye on embryos but all over the Internet there are lots of women who carry on TTC afterwards and other clinics also advise that you can TTC as normal after a couple of days. I think as long as you feel comfortable and bleeding has stopped just do what feels right for you.

Also for me it was COMPLETELY pain free. I, like others was soo nervous as I read some horror stories online and I was shaking with tears in my eyes as the procedure started. But there was absolutely no reason to be like this. It was completely fine.

I took 2 paracetamol and buscopan 30 minutes before the procedure.

KatRee · 03/06/2021 15:04

Just wanted to add my experience on here as reading this thread really helped me in the run up to my HyCoSy, which I had today. I took paracetamol about 2 hours before and also the previous evening (someone else advised this as the theory is it builds up in your system so has more effect). For me most of the procedure was just slightly uncomfortable - even inserting the catheter up the cervix was no more painful than the smear tests I've had. Unfortunately it turned out one of my tube is blocked and I did experience some short sharp cramps when they tried to get the dye through that one. About four hours have passed now and I have taken some more paracetamol as having some cramps that feel like mild period pains. I know everyone experiences things differently, but for me it has only been a very manageable level of discomfort so far. They advised me not to have sex today or tomorrow, to take it easy, but stay out of the sun, prescribed me a 5 day course of antibiotics

Loganberry14 · 16/07/2021 16:53

Also wanted to reassure people as I was getting very anxious about my hycosy. It was not much worse than a smear test, cramping wasn't great when they did the catheter but no worse than bad period pain. A few minor cramps later in the day but nothing awful. The most annoying thing is the antibiotics you have to take afterwards to avoid infection!

Hi just found this

Having hycosy on Tuesday CD10. I ovulate day 15/16 usually. Should we avoid intercourse?

I had a hysterscopy a few months ago which was so painful. Is this as bad?

Hello,

Good luck I hope all goes well.

No you should be fine my nurse said no intercourse for 24 hours that was all. We had intercourse after 24 and it was all fine.

I have never has a hysterscopy so unfortunately can not advise however I would assume the Hycosy would be less painful as its only a fluid not a camera that is being inserted.
