So gutted i was so happy thinking everything was ok,I just dont understand?!Anyway went into panic mode n made app with consultant4monday so i can get him2explain,n where we go from here?! x x x

Sarah

I think the letter you received was poorly worded to say the least, small wonder therefore you've been frightened by it.

Have you confirmed an appointment for next week?. I would not attend this on your own if at all poss because the other person as well can ask questions.

I have PCOS (Polcystic ovarian syndrome is not classed as a disease but a condition). It used to be termed polycystic ovarian disease. There is another condition called polycystic ovaries; this is also very common. Around one in every five women has polycystic ovaries.

PCOS is a very individualistic disorder and affects each woman with it very differently. It is not an absolute barrier to conception, I am a parent.

What else would you like to know, will try to help.

Attila x

Hi Sarah and all. Those consultants can be very scary with their terminology Sarah, I'm sure that they will be able to discuss it in more detail with you and put you straight on it all. Lots of luck.
I went to see my consultant last night and he's booked me in for a lap and dye and hysterocopy - a week tuesday. I think he's basically looking for adhesions possibly caused by c-section and signs of endometriosis. Bit nervous but mostly about having the general as the last time I had one was the emergency c-section with my son and I get quite teary just thinking about it.
Can anyone tell me how long you need to take off work for the op?

HI Sarah.

I also have PCO but not PCOS. I have no symptoms of PCOS at all, but have polycystic ovaries. But I have been told by the consultant that it is not a major problem for conceiving. Another consultant mentioned clomid to speed up conceiving, but my main fertility consultant was not inclined to using clomid on me due to risk of multiple births and my previous history of Prem birth. Like Attila said I think its quite common. I must admit I was freaked out when I was told and looking into everything. But have been told categorically it has nothing to do with our problems. I think its PCOS that throws up much more problems than PCO from my understanding.

Sorry you going through this. Its bloody hard work! Hope you appointment gives you some answers and will be thinking of you! Xx

DracuRAH · 02/11/2007 09:46

BC, I think the procedure took about 15 minutes and I had it done on a Friday, had the weekend and then called in sick for a couple of days (did not really need them, but they were a bonus) It was by far the easiest operation I have ever had, because you are only under a general for a matter of minutes. Sorry you had such a tough time with your C-Section
But this is a totally different Op and very easy to recover from. I'm a right wimp, so I promise its OK!

Good Luck {{{BIG HUGS}}}

Sarah

I was diagnosed with PCOS on the basis of my irregular periods and bloodwork showing a typical LH to FSH imbalance.

I became pg two months post diathermy surgery (this is a procedure whereby the surgeon punctures the cystic follicles with an electrical laser or needle). It is not a cure though - there isn't one and its causes are not fully understood.

The commonality between PCO and PCOS is the cystic follicles on the ovaries. These cystic follicles do disappear - only to be replaced by further cystic follicles. The ovaries can also appear to be larger than normal (ovaries are the size of a walnut) size.

Clomid should be used with a degree of caution as it is not always suitable for all such women. If a person is given this treatment then monitoring should be done (blood tests and ultrasounds).

One thing that is very important is to try to stay within the correct weight range for your height as excess pounds can exacerbate symptoms.

HTH, have a look at Verity's website which is www.verity-pcos.org.uk.

buttercupbabe · 02/11/2007 13:38

Thanks Annie and Drac.
Anniemac - lots of luck with your appointmnent. The hcg def worked this cycle so it's worth thinking about. I just thought I'd get this lap and dye done so that if everything is clear I can continue with the hcg and know that everything else is ok.
My worries about the lap and dye have faded into significance now as I just had my best friend tell me that the ovarian cyst (10cm big) that was found on an ultrasound 2 days ago is one of several and they have mentioned the c word. I'm so worried for her, as she went to the appt on her own and was given that news. I felt so useless on the other end of the phone. She has to go to hospital this afternoon to have blood tests to find out. I'm just praying that they are not nasty ones.

Thanks annie. I've just realised it should say 'insignificance'. Can't stop thinking about her.

sarah1986 · 02/11/2007 17:29

BC, Sorry to hear about your friend. Really hope it not serious. {{{SENDING V POSITIVE VIBES}}}

buttercupbabe · 03/11/2007 08:22

Another quick question for anyone in the know - will they tell you straight after if they found blockages etc or do you have to wait and see the conultant a couple of weeks after?

minxi · 03/11/2007 09:30

buttercup - I got told during the procedure that my tubes were patent - which meant clear!

buttercupbabe · 03/11/2007 13:57

Thanks minxi - I won't hear them if they say that as I'm having a general!

RahRah1 · 03/11/2007 23:02

Hi BC, from spending the last 3 years getting to know my fertility consultant, I can assure you they are more than forthcoming with the truth. Mine defiantly does not beat round the bush...

Heard anymore from your friend. Hope she is OK.. {{HUGS}}

buttercupbabe · 04/11/2007 11:52

My poor friend is as she puts it "ok because this is all happening to someone else". She is in absolute shock and is now waiting for the results when she sees her consultant on tuesday. She was also told that there is another big one and lots of little ones within the biggest one. They cant even see one of her ovaries. I'm hoping so much that they are not the nasty type. Everything you read about cysts at our age say they are usually non-cancerous and I'm praying this is the case for her. Thanks for all your messages, it's so noice to come on here and chat to others.

RahRah1 · 07/11/2007 09:12

Hi BC, hope your friends consultants appointment went well yesterday! My husband's cousin had massive problems recently and it turned out she had a fibroid that was massive! There was nothing they could do but give her a hysterectomy. She had not had any children, so naturally was very upsetting for her. But I saw her the other day and she is looking much better and doing really well. Everyone was so relieved when they knew it was not cancer, but the fibroid still had a devastating result. Its soooooo difficult {{{{HUGS}}}}

Your right about MN's its good to meet people that you can chat too. I find the TTC invaluable, as none of my other friends have had problems conceiving. Although they try, they just don't understand what its like.

Anyway, I'll stop waffling, hope you are OK and hope your friend is well XXXXx

buttercupbabe · 07/11/2007 14:04

Thanks rah - I take it you were/are also dracurah?! It's actually been much better news for my friend. It looks unlikely to be cancerous and after a 2nd scan the consultant thinks she has one of those cysts where it has hair etc in it. I've heard about them before. She still has to have an mri scan this week and probably surgery in a week or so. She might lose 1 ovary but the other looks healthy. I'm so relieved for her.
I'm now starting to get a little nervous about next week. Really hoping my tubes are open and it is just a short luteal phase that I've got.

RahRah1 · 07/11/2007 17:09

BC - Yes, I am DracRah!

So pleased for your friend, what great news. Well the best out of a bad situation. I have never heard of that kind of cyst. I hope her MRI and Surgery goes well.

I know it is a little nerve racking, but its good to find out if anything is there so it can be treated. Better I suppose than no knowing! Like I said before the op only takes 15 minutes, so you are literally in and out, so the general is very different than what is used in a big op. When I came round they had given me some drugs and I felt 'very happy'... Will be thinking of you! Best of luck Xx

buttercupbabe · 10/11/2007 17:15

Hi. I had my pre-op clinic yesterday afternoon and am now feeling better about it. I'm now just deciding on how many magazines etc I'm going to need to keep me busy for the few hours wait before I go in...
Yes I experienced the 'happy drugs' after having ds; I cringe when I think about how high I was and kept telling the nurses how wonderful they were etc! Will let you know how I get on...
