new thread...again!!

OP posts:
toomuchtimeonline · 19/10/2007 13:32

I've knitted a few scarves and blankets and I'm a dab hand at hats .. so thought I'd test my abilities with the cardie.. I'm sure I'll give in soon enough.. But had hoped to make something for a friend's baby for this xmas.. as I say I aim high [gmm]

noooomoooorescarynames · 19/10/2007 13:35

well so far I've only ever knitted about 10 rows of a scarf for my teddy (when I was about 9) and it's still not finished, so I'm starting from scratch! you sound like you know what you're doing though

toomuchtimeonline · 19/10/2007 13:40

I can knit straight for scarves and hats .. and I've learned how to reduce for hats but I'm new to increasing and shaping which is what you need for a cardie I think.. so it should be exciting!

How are you feeling today? Do you know whether illness affects your chance of conceiving this month?

gillypumpkin · 19/10/2007 13:59

I'm with nomore on the knitting achievements to date so I think I need to start small. I actually need to get the book though as MIL will smell rat if I ask her to post me hers and the last thing I need is her asking if I?m pg Haven?t joined a library yet, would they have it there?

Toomuch very impressed on your knitting skills! The way to change your name is through ?my registration? at the top of the page.

Ready I have a very strange mental image of babies and knitting needles now, I?d get myself kicked out of London Nappy Valley if I was such a careless mother; esp in the dressing dept!

toomuchtimeonline · 19/10/2007 14:52

Thanks gilly - will try now..

toomuchtimehaunting · 19/10/2007 14:53

test

toomuchtimehaunting · 19/10/2007 14:54

Yay!!! My first nickname change!!

noooomoooorescarynames · 19/10/2007 15:20

well done toomuch
I am feeling better - I hope the bug doesn't get in the way of ttc, otherwise that's a cycle of clomid I've wasted!
gilly you should find it in any library worth its salt

gillypumpkin · 19/10/2007 15:45

Islington Council and Holborn Council libraries are obviously saltless because they don?t stock it . I don?t know how to get hold of a pattern now unless I buy the book.

noooomoooorescarynames · 19/10/2007 15:53

do they have and debbie bliss books? there are other baby/childrens knits ones (by her) that might have very similar patterns in? Shame on your libraries

noooomoooorescarynames · 19/10/2007 16:03

have just looked online at their catalogues - try new baby knits (avaliable at Islington) or step by step knitting workbook (available at Holburn) Both by Debbie Bliss

gillypumpkin · 19/10/2007 16:31

thanks Nomore! The Holborn one is more convenient for me as it is near work, will they let me join if I am not a Camden resident? If not I'll check out the Islington one.

noooomoooorescarynames · 19/10/2007 16:35

for ready and gilly

noooomoooorescarynames · 19/10/2007 16:36

they should let you join if you live or work in that borough or an ajoining one. One day they will have a london-wide library card...

ReadySteadyTrickOrTreat · 19/10/2007 17:09

Ok. Noooomooore I swear - I got a cold-sweat panic when that video started - it was bizarre!!

PMSL at the thought of Nappy Valley mums abusing Gilly in the street

ReadySteadyTrickOrTreat · 19/10/2007 17:11

I mean the panic feeling was bizarre, the instruction video is excellent. I better knit a few more rows and give it a go.

PiggyPenguin · 19/10/2007 18:08

Umm, really need to think about nickname now you have all done so succesfully, not sure I want to be known as slimy... You were all busy today, glad to hear all the knitting plans.

My ds's scarf is coming on fabulously (well you know, for a scarf!) and will soon be casting off, then just have fringing to worry about - might have to get mum in for that bit!

mistlethrush · 19/10/2007 20:06

Sybil - fringes are easy as long as you want a straight-forward version: cut a bunch of wool slightly over 2x the length that you want the fringe to be. Fold in half (- this now has a loop end and cut end). With the right side of the scarf upwards (and the scarf going away from you) push the loop end of the bundle down through a hole close to the end. Pull through so that you have enough length to easily be able to get all the loops round your 1st 2 fingers and thumb - grab the cut ends and pull through the loop, gently pullin excess loop back upwards towards the hole - but the aim is to have the loop curled round so that the cut end falls fairly straight but the loop end shows in a line just below the end of the scarf (does this make sense?)

Can't find who was having problems casting off - its not difficult, as long as you don't knit too tightly - to start with, knit two stitches, then (using the needle that has still got most of the stitches on it), pick up the first of the stitches you knitted (I do this through the back of the stitch) and pull it over the top of the second stitch, then knit a third as normal, pull over the 2nd stitch you knitted etc.

Feeling grotty. Had a lousy night - including getting up (sorry, TMI) to wretch because of coughing so much. That on top of the feeling slightly queasy is not a good combination. Then ds, also not feeling particularly well - cough has made his ear infection come back (first time since June which is fantastic but that its come back as the perforation in his ear drum had been headling up last time we went to the specialist) decided that it would be a good idea not to have a nap at lunchtime so he was whingy and whiney all afternoon and finally fell asleep on way to pick up dh - then didn't want to wake up for supper...

mistlethrush · 19/10/2007 21:04

OK, so managing to go down in length even more... At least I can go back on the alchohol which helps my cough - and cough medicine...

ReadySteadyTrickOrTreat · 19/10/2007 21:11

Mistlethrush - Did I miss something??? - how comes you are talking about alcohol?????

mistlethrush · 19/10/2007 21:12

I think I'll give it a miss until after CHristmas now. I don't really want to have a July/August baby - difficult for them in terms of school.

ReadySteadyTrickOrTreat · 19/10/2007 21:17

Ok.... I am officially lost

Personally I don't buy that whole July/August baby struggling at school. If a child is going to struggle they will.

mistlethrush · 19/10/2007 21:26

I know, but if you're a July/Aug baby you end up being the youngest in the class so, particularly at the start, won't be at the same level as some of the rest of the class - which could get them into the habit of not expecting to achieve compared with their classmates.

Ds April - no problem (apart from birthday being in holidays some of the time which can make birthdays a problem). Was anticipating June - not too bad. However, not to be. July, August - well, August really out in terms of birthdays - no one would come to parties.

September/October - start of accademic year - great. Means I might wait until the new year. Although it depends how things pan out. Might throw the towel in.

toomuchtimehaunting · 20/10/2007 09:50
