Obese and TTC

Hello, I haven't seen any other threads on this subject yet but could be wrong!

Though it would be nice to chat to others who are TTC whilst being fat - whether you are trying to lose weight or not!

I can start, I'm 32 and have gained 3.5 stone since meeting my husband, and am now firmly in the obese category of BMI. I'm 5 foot 6, and since lockdown have started buying some size 16 clothes.
I feel very uncomfortable in myself, and feel unhealthy which I don't think will be helping my TTC journey. It definitely doesn't help me feel attractive for DTD!
I'm only on my 2nd cycle, and 9dpo but would love to hear others thoughts and experiences!

Hello, im 33 and in the obese category too Grin

unfortunately we have fertility issues and are currently on the NHS waiting list for ICSI up in Scotland.

I had to get down to a BMI of 29 which i managed, but that was last year and unfortunately im now up a stone ( the stress of waiting got to me and just over did it on the food and stopped doing my usual walking)

However, im back in the zone and currently determined to shed a stone by the end of the year . We could get the call from the hospital in the next few months so i need to be ready :)

Stay positive. if you are planning on doing weight loss, dont do any fad diets ... good old calorie counting and upping my steps during the day helped me a lot :)

Best of luck with your journey x

SarahTTC2020 · 06/07/2020 10:57

@justhereforthecraic thank you, I'm 32

Sorry to hear that you have fertility issues, seems to be a good motivator even though it's unfair that you can't access treatment above 29 BMI!
This is why I want to make some health changes now, otherwise I know as soon as I ask for tests, the Dr will say I need to lose weight.
Definitely not up for fad diets, done all of them in my time 🙈

@SarahTTC2020 thank you :)

it was tough to come to terms with but we are feeling positive about it now. Luckily i have time on my side...plus with the impact of CV19, alot of treatments/appointments were pushed back.

Oh Fad diets are the worst. easy option and you lose weight quick but hard keeping it off. I did slimming world for 2/3 years and i did lose most of the weight there...it was keeping it off that i struggled with.

I followed a local guy on instagram who started his own fitness programme and he really helped me with building a knowledge around what i eat etc. I know what i have to do now to lose the weight x

all the best with your journey!

SarahTTC2020 · 06/07/2020 19:14

Oh that's good, what's his Instagram page? I've done 10k steps so far for the first time in a few days so first of many hopefully. All the best for your journey!

I took all my measurements today, waist measurement means I should be going to the GP according to the NHS website... I don't feel like I'm very high risk!
3.5 stone to go to a healthy BMI... feels so far away

We will be ttc in September, and I've just come off the pill to regulate my cycles etc. Weighed myself this evening, then read some NHS info about being pregnant and overweight and freaked myself out lol. Just concentrating on the positives and thinking good thoughts now lol. I'm going to try and loose a bit of weight before September but I'll still be classed as overweight. Got my fingers crossed for everyone! X

babasaclover · 08/07/2020 21:03

Good luck to you all ☺️. The reason for needing to be a healthy weight is ivf has a bad chance of working with the more weight you carry. So the nhs won't find it got obese as it's likely to fail.

I had 2 cycles

Please do @Baker0104 ! How much do you want to lose? I'm 3.5 stone away from healthy BMI but still trying now.

@babasaclover exactly why I'm trying to do something now in case we need IVF down the line

Hi Sarah. I'm in the obese catergory too. Have been with all my pregnacies and I will be when I (hopefully) conceive again. One of the things about being big in a pregancy (for me) is that I only ever gained baby weight and went straight back to my pre pregnancy weight a day later. I was told because I'm fat. Don't know how true that is.

Anyway, good luck! I'm 8dpo. 1st cycle. TTC #3. I feel like i'm already out. Eep.

SarahTTC2020 · 09/07/2020 12:44

@Lucky2Be thank you for sharing! Good luck, when will you test?
I'm 12dpo and heart rate dropped again a bit today but I'm tempted to test in the morning just to get bfn out of the way so I can go to a garden party Saturday.
Expecting AF on Saturday

I actually tested this morning because I bought a whole load of cheapies. Haha. (BFN of course!)

Have you resisted testing this whole time? Eek. You are good. 😊 remember you're not out until the witch arrives. 😊🤞

Baker0104 · 09/07/2020 13:45

@SarahTTC2020 thank you! I think to get my bmi under 30 ill need to loose about 5 stone so a fair amount. I know plenty of people who are my size and have had successful pregnancies etc so fingers crossed! I'm a nanny and the summer holidays have just started so I'm going to get out with the kids lots and will probably go onto slimming world. I did it before and lost 2 stone so should be easy enough to pick back up x

SarahTTC2020 · 09/07/2020 17:02

@Baker0104 I've also known plenty of overweight people get pregnant, I think I'm just a bit scared of all the additional tests tbh
I think slimming world principles always help me the most as it limits my alcohol which is a huge weak point for me

@SarahTTC2020 I know what you mean, I freaked myself out last night reading about different tests lol. But then I had a chat with a friend whose had 3 babies whilst overweight and she didn't have any problems so that calmed me down lol. Slimming world is good for me as I still feel I can eat lots just make sure I eat the right things lol. The pinch of nom books have been a life saver as well! I think I just need to go tee total for a bit as I've drunk so much in lockdown 😂😂

Lucky2Be · 09/07/2020 20:29

What tests are you talking about Ladies? I only ever remember the glucose test because of my weight.

mackjm20 · 09/07/2020 20:48

Hiya can I join please?

I am 29 and we are planning to start ttc in September. It is currently all I can think about but BMI currently 32 so doing 12 weeks of healthy food and exercise with folic acid first to be as prepared as possible.

I don’t know about anyone else but once I started to google about ttc I now cannot stop there seems to be a lot more to it than I had ever imagined!

This will be our first time ttc baby #1.

Good luck everyone- nice to know there are other people having the same thoughts as me after visiting the nhs website xx

Baker0104 · 09/07/2020 21:57

@Lucky2Be I mean more things like extra risks etc. Probably wouldn't be able to even consider a home birth. Defo shouldn't have said tests now I've reread that lol. Sorry hun! X

SarahTTC2020 · 10/07/2020 11:25

@Baker0104 I do like the pinch of nom books, need to actually unpack my cookbooks from when we moved 4 months ago 🙈

@mackjm20 good luck! Great to start making healthy changes before ttc. I just couldn't seem to get the motivation with lockdown. AF due tomorrow so probably will want to stuff my face but then healthier lifestyle resumes ready for cycle 3!

@Lucky2Be that's one I don't want! Also read about being under consultant monitoring if obese, as well as all the additional risks.
Read that even a 5% reduction in weight can improve fertility so that's my first target!

@SarahTTC2020 thank you :) I know lockdown has made it so hard! Yes got to give yourself a little break when AF arrives :) fingers crossed for cycle 3 :)

Aaw. Lots of pregnant women, for all different types of reasons, have to take the glucose test. Its not as scary as you think. 😊 I had gestational diabetes with my eldest but not my youngest. (My girls are 13mths apart 🙊)

Losing 5% of your weight is definitely a good idea. 😊 I was consultant lead for other reasons but maybe my weight was a factor too! 😐

Do you think you're out this cycle? I'm 9dpo. Crampimg badly. Really think i'm out too! X

SarahTTC2020 · 10/07/2020 13:10

@Lucky2Be yeah I ended up doing a frer today and it was stark white at 13dpo so definitely out! Means I can drink at a family gathering on 18th now which is good, as there's a hot tub and alcohol so would have been impossible to keep secret
