Positive test but I’m bleeding

Norrisskipjack · 27/06/2019 20:15

I started bleeding a week after my period finished today which was weird so I took a test and for the first time in my life, it was positive. Obviously I then immediately took about 40 more tests Blush

I’ve attached my Flo app screen which is accurate and I know I ov’ed on the 5th because I tested.

WTF is going on and why am I bleeding? Am I early miscarrying? Sad

Bleeding is when I wipe and there was a little bit of cramping earlier. My period on the 17th- 20th was completely normal.

Do I need to call 111?

They’ve just called, HCG is 105, I don’t know what that means.

Sorry you're going through this. The hcg level is quite low, if the repeat the test in 2 days they'll be looking to see if it drops as per the miscarriage or increase if the pregnancy is viable.

NavyBerry · 01/07/2019 15:05

Oh so sorry! Fingers crossed it's not ectopic. Please take care of yourself!

PG2018 · 01/07/2019 16:09

I'm so sorry, please look after yourself x

TTCGlasgow · 01/07/2019 19:58

I’m so sorry to hear this. I know how awful it can be to be sent home from the EPU with such uncertainty. You have every right to be heartbroken. Being early in your pregnancy or having not known you were pregnant for long doesn’t change that.

The hcg number does sound lower than it should be but it is only really when the EPU see whether it falls or rises (and by how much) over a 48 hour period can they start to give you an idea of what is going on.

In ectopic pregnancies, hcg often rises but much slower than a viable pregnancy. They would ideally want your hcg to double every 48 hours (but from memory they are happy with anything above a 70% rise) in a viable pregnancy.

If it rises, they will either scan you again or take your hcg again (48 hours after) to see what happens with it.

If your hcg falls, unfortunately the likelihood is that you will miscarry.

Please get yourself checked out if you do experience cramps. From personal experience, you won’t always be in absolute agony with an ectopic.

Sending positive thoughts. You are doing the right thing taking some time off and doing things to distract yourself.

Norrisskipjack · 01/07/2019 23:31

Thanks, I’ve had cramps today and I’ve started spotting again. DH is devastated because he doesn’t understand how common this is and because I’m not rolling around on the floor in agony, he’s not accepting that this is a miscarriage. TV shows really should portray miscarriages more accurately. He thinks I’m being pessimistic.

I know in my core that I’ve lost this baby and I can pinpoint the exact moment it happened on Friday.

Can I ask what happens next in terms of TTC? Will I get a period and reset my cycle?

OP posts:
TTCGlasgow · 02/07/2019 07:01

Oh no. That’s awful.

If it is a miscarriage, the EPU may keep checking your hcg to ensure that it drops to below 5 - which is a level at which you are no longer pregnant. I suspect that they will monitor you closely since they raised the possibility of an ectopic.

You will normally be asked to wait until your first period until you can try again. For many people, their period returns quickly. If it takes longer than 12 weeks, your Gp can give you something to stimulate your period.

Keep an eye on the colour of the spotting. In ectopic pregnancies you can continue to spot but it is often darker and more watery - some people describe it like prune juice and that was my experience after some initial heavy bleeding.

Please keep up posted!

Norrisskipjack · 02/07/2019 07:18

Hmm, it certainly is like prune juice. Dark brown and watery and some clots. I also have an occasional sharp pain on the right side. Do I need to do anything or will they pick this up on Wednesday?

OP posts:
TTCGlasgow · 02/07/2019 07:54

I’m really sorry but you have a lot of symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy. I would recommend that you call your early pregnancy unit today and tell them that you had a scan with a “pregnancy of unknown location” early this week and are continuing to have cramps and watery (prune juice like) spotting. They will probably want to see you sooner rather than later.

There is some good info in Tommy’s - www.tommys.org/pregnancy-information/pregnancy-complications/pregnancy-loss/ectopic-pregnancy-information-and-support

Given your low hcg levels, they may look to treat you with a methotrexate injection if it is an ectopic.

Also the Ectopic Pregnancy Trust can offer you advice too. I know this is so difficult but you will get through it. I experienced this in April but had to have surgery as I had a higher hcg and a heartbeat was detected. I’ve since had a period and I’m feeling much more like myself now.

Your top priority has to be looking after yourself now. If managed early, ectopic can be treated safely but leaving it can be dangerous.

Norrisskipjack · 02/07/2019 10:00

Ok so I need to call them? The EPU are seeing me tomorrow morning at 10am anyway, could it wait until then or is it more urgent?

OP posts:
NavyBerry · 02/07/2019 10:09

Please go to emergency and ask them to check it is not ectopic. It can be terribly serious and dangerous! I had two miscarriages and I didn't have any pains. Better to be safe than sorry!

NavyBerry · 02/07/2019 10:11

It's more urgent. If it is ectopic you have a risk to lose your tube. You have pains, bleeding. It cannot wait. They will understand your concerns

Contraceptionismyfriend · 02/07/2019 10:19

I'm so sorry you're going through this.
But given your symptoms I wouldn't wait until tomorrow.

DieCryHate · 02/07/2019 10:25

Sorry you're going through this OP. I'd also go. I had a similar situation recently. I had no pain and was having blood tests at EPU due to nothing seen on the scan but the pain kicked in one morning out of nowhere so off I went. They will take you seriously, monitor you and take action if required.

TTCGlasgow · 03/07/2019 09:59

How did you get on OP?

username9909877 · 03/07/2019 10:39

Only just read this thread was hoping for a positive outcome. So sorry OP be kind to yourself Thanks

Norrisskipjack · 03/07/2019 12:48

I went today, they took more blood and are concerned about ectopic so have rushed the results through and are going to call me with them as soon as they have them.

Lots more pain today’s and a gush of blood overnight. I’m distracting myself with cleaning and gardening which is helping Smile

I’m ok, I’ve accepted it. I just want to stop bleeding.

OP posts:
Joopy · 03/07/2019 12:59

So sorry OP, be kind to yourself

Norrisskipjack · 03/07/2019 15:43

HCG has dropped to 59 so it’s a miscarriage not a ectopic thankfully. Thanks everyone for looking after me the last few days Flowers

OP posts:
TTCGlasgow · 03/07/2019 15:59

That’s absolutely rotten but I’m relieved that it’s not ectopic for your sake. That’s not to diminish your loss which is just as great but hopefully you will have an easier road physically than you might have had.

Take time to grieve, look after yourself and keep thinking of the future.

NavyBerry · 03/07/2019 16:04

Relieved to hear it is not ectopic! I was worried about you. Sorry for your loss, take care of yourself!

Sunflower2019 · 03/07/2019 18:42

Flowers lots of hugs @Norrisskipjack

Norrisskipjack · 03/07/2019 22:05

It’s properly kicking off now, the blood is really running rather than just spotting and there’s loads. Big clots and a lot of cramping pains down my right leg Sad

Is there anything I can do to make this stop or do I have to sit through it?

OP posts:
TTCGlasgow · 03/07/2019 22:54

If it continues to be really heavy, I would recommend calling 111 for advice. In general, yes you do just need to sit it out unfortunately but I would definitely speak to NHS Direct if you feel that it is getting extremely heavy. Such a bloody awful situation!

caffeineaddictx · 03/07/2019 23:42

If you have enough bleeding to fill a tea cup they say you need to go to hospital as it's a lot of blood but not sure how true that is. I lost way more than that two years ago when I had a miscarriage and I was fine. Although when I told them I'd lost that amount they sent me an ambulance and I had to go to hospital 🤷🏻‍♀️ it wouldn't stop. It was literally gushing out of me (sorry for tmi) and the clots were huge too. I actually passed a sac and the placenta which was tiny. The pain felt like contractions when your about 7/8 cm dilated when actually in labour, and I wasn't even that far along. It's horrible. I know. I hope u feel better soon just take it easy and take care of yourself. It isn't your fault Thanks
