Coming off the pill after 16 years on Microgynon, and trying!

Hi All,

Newbie to this group, so hello all! Smile

I’m 31, and DH is 35 we got married in 2016 after 6 years together and have now decided to start tentatively trying for our first baby.

The timing is probably still not 100% right, we’re still in our first home a little 2 bed terrace, im not 100% happy in my job (it’s very stressful and I’ve had a lot of extra responsibilities placed on me last 18 months) financially we both have well paid jobs but are both paying off big loan and one big credit card but I feel like we’re ready now and financially we can make it work for us.

My worry is, that will the time ever be right even if we wait to move house or a new job etc? I’ve been on the pill for 16 years (microgynon) and finished it on Saturday 1st sept, and don’t plan to re start it to see if my cycles regulate and how long it might take.

I worry our age may go against us, and it’ll take a bit longer for everything to get back to normal. I’ve signed up to natural cycles so I can start tracking my temperature, just waiting for AF to arrive.

Has anyone else had any experience of coming off Microgynon after a long time, and how long it took for things to go back to normal and how long it took to get pregnant?

Thanks so much in advance, I’m naturally an anxious person and I am already fretting!

Hello

I was on microgynon for 12 years and everything went back to normal the first month after I stopped taking them. I fell pregnant after 4 months of trying. I was 31 too.

Blueberry001 · 03/09/2018 13:07

Thanks for your reply, that is so good that you back to normal so quickly, and got pregnant after 4 months. I’m hoping for a similar situation!

Hi OP. I was on it for 8 years, came of it in Feb and I'll be 11 weeks on Wednesday 🙂 Cycle went back to normal immediately (with none of the hideous period pain I used to have which is why I went on MG in the first place). Every woman is different but it worked out for me. Good luck! X

MCC85 · 03/09/2018 13:13

I was on microgynon from 17-29, I conceived the first month I came off it!
I only had a withdrawal bleed and then my little boy was created!
So it can happen quick.

Good luck for when you do ttc xx

Blueberry001 · 03/09/2018 13:26

Ah thanks so much for your reply, this is all sounding so hopeful for me!

I’m such a ‘googler’ I’ve been reading some stories of it taking over a year just to get cycles back to normal let alone getting pregnant, so this is all sounding much more positive!

MCC85 · 03/09/2018 13:30

I googled and panicked, it was a shock it happened so quick, but a very welcome shock! Xx

Blueberry001 · 03/09/2018 13:37

@MCC85 I bet it was a shock, but you must have been so pleased. Congratulations on your little boy xxx

I was on this for 12 years and fell pregnant 6 months after stopping. Good luck!! Xxx

BellaVida · 03/09/2018 13:45

Was on it a similar amount of time and fell pregnant the first month coming off with all of my DC!

purplestar9 · 03/09/2018 13:59

Hello, I was on microgynon for 11 years, had normal withdrawal bleed and my cycles were fairly regular of around 33 days. I got my BFP this cycle after 3 cycles after stopping pill. Good luck!

Blueberry001 · 03/09/2018 14:01

Thanks so much for your stories ladies, it all seems super positive that cycles can return to normal quickly and there is a lot of success! This makes me feel a lot less anxious, and we should just go for it and see what happens! Best get clued up on some pre pregnancy advice!

SoyDora · 03/09/2018 14:06

I was on it for 10 years, took 10 months for cycles to return to normal and 13 months to conceive. I didn’t go back on it after DC1 and DC’s 2 and 3 were conceived in the 1st and 2nd months of trying. So it can be quick or it can take a while! Good luck!

Blondemother · 03/09/2018 14:41

Hello! Came off after about 16 years on it at age 32, had withdrawal bleed, proper period 28 days after that, then pregnant. Very lucky!

Were your periods regular before you started taking it?

Blueberry001 · 03/09/2018 14:58

@blondemother Ah so lucky, congratulations you must have been so pleased.

I don’t think I did, I was a bit of a late starter not getting my first period until I was 15, and whilst I had long cycles (I think I was more like 35-40 days per cycle) my periods were so painful (now I’m older I’ve defitiley built up a tolerance!), I went on microtonal 9 months later at 16 to control them and meant I could skip them. I was a regular at taking 63 days worth (3 packets) in a row in order to only have one period every couple of months so I’ve no idea what’ll happen with mine now!

Blueberry001 · 03/09/2018 14:58

Microgynon above not microtonal 🙈

I came off it in January this year, went 4 months without a period and have since had three 6ish week cycles (the first being a chemical pregnancy) and yet to be successful. I think my body is taking longer than average to settle into its own rhythm but everyone is different.

MrsDash · 03/09/2018 15:26

I meant to add, I’m 29 and it’s our first time TTC too. I’d been on the pill for 6 years.

maddiie · 03/09/2018 15:32

@Blueberry001 I'm 23.. I was on it for 5 years. It's 13 months later and my cycle couldn't be more irregular, and unfortunately still ttc with no luck so far. Sorry to be a bit more negative just everyone's experiences are so different. I do think my body may just be taking longer than normal, finally got an appointment on Friday to start seeing what can be done. Hope it all goes smoothly for you xx

HRTpatch · 03/09/2018 15:33

I was on it 20 years...came off it for 3 months and got pregnant. I was 35.

Blondemother · 03/09/2018 15:35

So many different experiences - I guess there is only one way to find out! Go for it.

Blueberry001 · 03/09/2018 15:59

Thank you all so much for your replies ladies, it’s all so different for everyone isn’t it. Seems some have been very quick, and some haven’t, thank goodness for such wonderful resources we can all access online and with the NHS.

Hopefully my period will arrive today or tomorrow, when I’m on the pill I only have a bleed for 2-3 days so I’ve always gotten it a few days after stopping my pill. So will wait to see what happens this month, and then go for it I think.

How accurate is monitoring your temp? Did anyone do this after stopping the pill? Xx

OP posts:
MrsDash · 03/09/2018 16:18

Yes I do this and it’s been really interesting to see and easy to enter temps into the app I use (Flo) though I would say the best thing I do to know when I’m ovulating is use OPKs (cheap ovulation predictor tests from the internet). It took me ages to use them properly though as I didn’t understand fully and the instrictions were so brief. Work out your likely fertile window (usually mid cycle though for me it’s around cycle day 30). Take the test after 10am and then again in the afternoon or evening. It will probably always have some kind of second line but when it’s positive it’s either as dark or even darker than the test line. As soon as you get that it means you’ll ovulate in next 24-36 hours. You get positive results until ovulation has taken place. During this time is the best time to BD! If it weren’t for this I would be in the dark about my ovulation as temps only really tell you when you’ve ovulated afterwards. Hope that’s helpful anyway.

Blueberry001 · 03/09/2018 16:44

@MrsDash Oh thanks for the information, I’ve just ordered some off Amazon so will give them a go to see if I can track what’s going on. This will be a shock to the system after so long.

How long have you been trying for? X

OP posts:
MrsDash · 03/09/2018 16:50

Technically 8 months but only tracked 3 cycles. It took 4 months before my period returned. I then had a 6 week cycle where I identified ovulation and got pregnant but it was a chemical pregnancy as then I got my period 4 days late. I’ve since had two more cycles of 40-42 days. I think (hope) my body is still settling from the pill. Beforehand I was regular each month, definitely didn’t have long cycles like this. It’s horrible waiting so long to ovulate.

CaseFace30 · 03/09/2018 16:52

I was on microgynon for 10 years. I came off it just got a break and periods regulated almost immediately. I only started trying for a baby 6 months later but fell pregnant after our first month of trying.

As for being ready, this is what I told myself: if you wait until you're ready, you'll be waiting the rest of your life.
