Coming off the pill after 16 years on Microgynon, and trying!

Hi All,

Newbie to this group, so hello all! Smile

I’m 31, and DH is 35 we got married in 2016 after 6 years together and have now decided to start tentatively trying for our first baby.

The timing is probably still not 100% right, we’re still in our first home a little 2 bed terrace, im not 100% happy in my job (it’s very stressful and I’ve had a lot of extra responsibilities placed on me last 18 months) financially we both have well paid jobs but are both paying off big loan and one big credit card but I feel like we’re ready now and financially we can make it work for us.

My worry is, that will the time ever be right even if we wait to move house or a new job etc? I’ve been on the pill for 16 years (microgynon) and finished it on Saturday 1st sept, and don’t plan to re start it to see if my cycles regulate and how long it might take.

I worry our age may go against us, and it’ll take a bit longer for everything to get back to normal. I’ve signed up to natural cycles so I can start tracking my temperature, just waiting for AF to arrive.

Has anyone else had any experience of coming off Microgynon after a long time, and how long it took for things to go back to normal and how long it took to get pregnant?

Thanks so much in advance, I’m naturally an anxious person and I am already fretting!

@mrsdash I can imagine it’s hard but it sounds like you are doing everything right and tracking well. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you that your timings get shorter for you :)

@caseface30 I think you’re right, they’ll never be a right time will there, I’m sure we’ll manage in this house just fine if needs be! I mean my sister and I shared a room in my parents 2 bed house (we didn’t have much money when we were little, until my parents careers took off later in life) and we were absolutely fine then we moved to a big family home when I was 12! Xxx

I don’t know if it helps but I came off Microgynon for a couple of months a couple of years ago (back on it now) and before I went on the pill in the first place I was late by about 5 days every time, so that was the norm for me, but once I had my first period after coming off the pill I found I had shows for a couple of weeks after my period, then it was ok again.

I've only ever used microgynon and it worked so well (even when I missed a couple) that I used to worry a little I might not be able to have children, but I conceived very quickly whenever I came off it. Good luck!!

Blueberry001 · 03/09/2018 19:43

@shirleyschmidt that’s so nice to hear, as that’s my worry too as I’ve never had any scares or worries in the whole 16 years I’ve been on it! I too have missed the odd day here or there too, and no issues so that was one of my main anxieties but I’m just hoping that the pill was doing it’s actual job and is not a sign of my fertility!

Was on it about 18 years, cycle back to normal first cycle, used contraception first cycle, barely saw DH second cycle was pregnant 3rd cycle so first real opportunity. I was 35 and DH 31. We were both a bit shocked it was so quick - I had pretty much suggested to DH the he’d have 6 months or so of fun ‘trying’ Blush

louiise98 · 03/09/2018 19:50

I was on Micrognon for 3 years, ended up getting pregnant on it, went back on it for another year after dds birth, have recently come back off it again to conceive no2, had a withdrawal bleed almost instantly and back to my normal cycle after the withdrawal bleed x

samatamfabahaba · 03/09/2018 19:51

I was in the EXACT same position as you. Same pill. Same length of time. Had a month off for some strange reason and got pregnant by accident! Now the proud owner of the most beautiful baby girl ever and so grateful I was a lazy bastard and didn't go to the GP for more!

WhatALearningCurve · 03/09/2018 19:52

I'd been on it since I was 16 (give or take a few months here and there) I'm now 30, came of it in April / May and I was pregnant in June

Blueberry001 · 03/09/2018 19:59

Wow ladies you’ve all been so lucky and so blessed with your beautiful babies so quickly! Congratulations to you all, this gives me a lot of hope! (I know we’re all different but I want to be a little bit positive or I’ll go mad!)

@drwhy I think my DH is hoping for a good year of ‘trying’ 🙈😂

I took microgynon for 10 years, then stopped (age 29) and was pregnant in a month, so I was waiting for my first "normal period"which never came, and only realised I was pregnant when I was already 10 weeks in.

So it was quick Shock

Peanutbuttercups21 · 03/09/2018 20:33

My gyno said that when you stop the pill your body jumps at the opportunity to get pregnant. Not sure that was scientific or just chat Grin

Blueberry001 · 03/09/2018 20:34

@peanutbuttercups oh gosh that must have been a surprise! Did you get your withdrawal bleed as normal and then nothing? Congratulations on your pregnancy too :D xxxx

Was on it for 18 years, stopped in the June and was pregnant by August!

Stickybunfighting · 03/09/2018 22:25

Like peanut I had the same, on Microgynon for 11 years, stopped to see what would happen rather than waiting for natural cycle to kick in and I was pregnant about 3 weeks later (which makes dating the pregnancy difficult- v light bleeding on the pill and I'd been missing the odd one or two for a while and having sex, pregnancy was no big deal by then), anecdotally a lot of friends said the same about themselves or friends, that if they'd just stopped and ttc or let it happen it did very quickly- some abstained or used condoms or pull out method until their cycle returned normally and took a couple of months to conceive. Same with my next pregnancy, took mini pill (can't remember the brand) and kept forgetting, missing one or two. I did abstain then because we weren't ready for a second but I carried on with the pill for about 4/5mths abstinence and as soon as I stopped it I was pregnant 2 weeks later. I do think there might be something in trying to conceive as soon as you stop hormonal contraception rather than waiting for a natural cycle which makes more sense on paper because you can track potential ovulation and lmp dates. As I say, it is anecdotal rather than scientific though!
