Hi
I was on metformin for years treating pcos before going onto the pill- now we want to start a family I came off the pill 14 months ago- been on metformin for 4 Months and still no sign of periods-
Doctor has referred me to the hospital now- anyone had anything similar?
Just wondering what to expect really?
I have been told to loose weight in case of IVF but other than that nothing
Any help or advice would be great thanks :)

I've had PCOS. I was able to totally reverse it and lose a lot of weight on low carb. I didn't need any meds and happily reduced my risk for type 2. Would you try that instead of meds?

NoseringGirl · 28/01/2018 10:57

I went on a low GI diet when I was put on metformin and that did the job. I'm not sure metformin alone would've been enough for me.

LookingAtTheStars89 · 28/01/2018 14:14

@NoseringGirl. What exactly is a low GI diet?

FanofFung · 28/01/2018 15:28

It's eating food that doesn't bring your blood sugar so high. In my experience the carbs need to be greatly reduced to solve the insulin resistance that goes hand in hand with PCOS.

Littlemisssugarplum88 · 29/01/2018 12:08

I'm taking metformin for pcos but I feel like I need the carbs to stop me from feeling faint / dizzy / sick etc.
My bmi is 31 so definitely need to lose weight - it's all so frustrating. I've bought a Fitbit to encourage me to do more walking xx

Pinkroseuk · 01/02/2018 20:15

I would be happy to try a low carb diet but struggle to have time to cook two different meals each night (husband is type 1 diabetic and a massive eater so needs a big carb/meat meal).
Has anyone found an increase in exercise has helped by itself with a minimal
Diet change? Thanks

I've started to walk to and from work (20 mins each way) and I think it's definitely helped to reduce my appetite, as well as the metformin.
I stepped up to 3 metformin on Tuesday but that night I was so sick 🤢 Only been taking 1 since then xx

Pinkroseuk · 01/02/2018 20:54

Ah great thankyou :) I would love to be able to walk to work but it's 50 mins drive away! I have started walking at lunchtimes though :) I have upped to 4 metformin a day but have to take it with meals otherwise don't feel great either! X

They expect you to have 4 meals a day then?
It really does have some horrible side effects. Have you been on it long xx

Pinkroseuk · 01/02/2018 21:35

I'm just taking two at dinner time - seems to be working so far- only since November but was on it for about 7 years before going onto the pill. How long have you been on it? Thanks x

Ooh did you have much luck with it beforehand?! I took it for about 6 months then got pregnant oct 2016 but then it ended in mmc at 12 weeks and we've been ttc again for the last 14 months with no luck. Started back on the metformin about 8 weeks ago xx

Pinkroseuk · 02/02/2018 06:35

Yes I was getting regular periods when I was on it before and lost weight but had no luck since being back on it this time- came off the pills almost a year ago to start ttc so fingers crossed it starts to work soon x

I was diagnosed with PCOS after having 100-200 day cycles and the worst acne. They prescribed Metformin and although it made me really really unwell at times (like can’t leave the toilet bad) it kick started my weight loss. I joined slimming world and lost 3 stone. I now have regular 28 day cycles you can set your watch by, and am on no form of contraception. I’ve stopped taking Metformin and seen no change so for me it was all about weight and lifestyle!

Littlemisssugarplum88 · 03/02/2018 06:25

Just to let you all know I've had a positive test after 2 months back on the metformin :) xx

@Littlemisssugarplum88 do you mind me asking if you were getting periods when on metformin? I haven't been doing pregnancy tests as the had no periods :/ thanks xx

Yeah I was, my periods never changed.
Maybe try the clearblue digital ovulation test and see if you can track it that way?! Xx

Good luck @Pinkroseuk xx

peachesarenom · 03/02/2018 09:19

Hi everyone. I've been on metformin, 2 x 500 for 3 months plus inofolic sachets for 6 weeks before my bfp. Sadly ended in mc but I think it was the inofolic sachets that made the difference.

I've always been bad at diet but exercise works independently to help insulin resistance! Good luck xxx

Pinkroseuk · 03/02/2018 09:40

Thanks @peachesarenom- going to try upping the exercise and reduce carbs I think.
Will keep going with the metformin and keep my fingers crossed x

@peachesarenom we're the inofolic sachets something u can get over the counter or do they need to be on prescription? Thanks

peachesarenom · 03/02/2018 09:52

You need to get them online. My GP said her gynae colleagues recommend them

Pinkroseuk · 03/02/2018 10:01

Thankyou @peachesarenom - I will have a look online thanks x
