Hi
I was on metformin for years treating pcos before going onto the pill- now we want to start a family I came off the pill 14 months ago- been on metformin for 4 Months and still no sign of periods-
Doctor has referred me to the hospital now- anyone had anything similar?
Just wondering what to expect really?
I have been told to loose weight in case of IVF but other than that nothing
Any help or advice would be great thanks :)

Can I also remind everyone that if like me you have a higher bmi then you need a larger dose of folic acid. 5mg. Your GP can prescribe this.

Pinkroseuk · 03/02/2018 10:12

@peachesarenom yes I would probably benefit from a higher dose- was taking the seven seas off the shelf ones but they don't seem to have made any difference at all!
Thanks

I didn't know till I was pregnant then the midwife sent me to my GP with strict instructions to get a prescription that day.

I was on metformin for pcos and thyroid problems. I went to see a dietician who told me to eat more carb and not low gi. She gave me the British heart foundation guide to a healthy diet. I lost 10kg in 6months. Then found out I was pregnant during a large chunk of that time! I then stayed on metformin and now have 2 amazing dc after trying for 7 yrs.

See if you can get referred to a dietician who can advise based on your body to help with the weight loss, they will be more open to other options later if you are seen to be taking their advice. Good luck

Thankyou for the advice @Ratbagratty.
I have been referred to the hospital now so will see what they say is best to do- thanks x

That is great news, I really hope you it works out for you.

Hi sorry I hope you don't mind me jumping on your thread. But I was wondering who prescribed you metformin? My gp said it's not something he can do so referred me to endrocrinology but there's a 16 week waiting list for an appointment. Feel like I'm getting nowhere!

peachesarenom · 04/02/2018 18:23

My GP did homefromworklate but only because my blood sugar was in the pre diabetes range. Ask GP for a blood sugar test?

Pinkroseuk · 04/02/2018 18:41

@homefromworklate my GP did as i was on it previously- I'm sure they could do. I have had it for PCOS nothing linked to diabetics- it's off label I think for that use but still doctor should be able to prescribe it? I have been referred to hospital but in the same boat with a massive waiting list- feels like getting no where fast! Xx

Thanks, I was on metformin years ago when I got diagnosed with PCOS but moved areas 7 years and since then no one will prescribe it!
It's so frustrating as when I'm on it I don't crave carbs / sugar so helps with weight loss and PCOS symptoms in general.

Pinkroseuk · 04/02/2018 19:03

Yeah I was for years too- just went back to my GP and they have it to me to try and start my periods again- maybe try the GP again in the meant time? Xx

I was prescribed metformin by the endocrinologist department, I was told it's experimental but seems to work for a lot of women (in my case to help with insulin resistance due to thyroid, pcos and weight loss issues) no one mentioned at the time they could increase chance of conception (I think it's in the leaflet).
